Every day strength is being added to the rumor that there will be a reduction of wages in several departments of the Pennsylvania Steel Company on or about the first of the year. Notices have not yet been posted announcing the formal reduction but for the past several days employes of several departments have been called to the general offices, where it is understood conferences took place relative to the contemplated move to cut down expenses. The plan of the reduction is in accord with the interests of the iron and steel companies over the country, which are headed by the United States Steel Company.

So far as is known, the departments first to be affected are the. Bessemer and bloom ing mill, 1, which employ several hope to diminish the thefts, hundred men, although it is possible that the cut will not be conhned to those two departments. The new plan under which the reduction is expected to be made is the sliding scale, which operates in many of the steel mills of the country and graduates the wages. Under the present order the men are paid by tonnage, and with the new order it is said that the men will be paid by the hour, with a maximum limit. The reduction will vary from ten to forty per cent.

The Susquehanna. River, which has been frozen solid at this point, is being utilized hourly and what is the ferryman's loss will be the working man's gain, as large numbers of the latter living at New Cumberland and working at the Pennsylvania Steel Works use it as an ice bridge morning and evening. As yet no person has ventured to use the ice as a bridge for teams, although it is confidently believed that a few more days of cold weather will make ice sufficiently stroug to hold teams. Few spots on the river are good for skating, although here and there there, are small places where the ice is the finest. Both steamboat lines are suspended.

Within the last week, chicken thieving has become so much a custom that several of the larger dealers in fowls are thinking of taking some action to prevent it and capture the culprits. Starting with the attempted robbery of the hen house of Superintendent Dougherty, of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, several months ago. there have been few lapses between nights, when some robbery was not reported. Wednesday night the thieves changed their appetites and robbed the pigeon pen of Henry Mansberger, 22 Adams street, of 20 out of a possible 25 fancy pigeons. The loss is estimated at $25 and includes tumblers, carriers and fan tails.

Mr. Mansberger heard some Yioise in the vicinity of the pen early in the evening, but paid no at tention to it. In the morning he discovered his loss. The same night two pet bantam chickens were stolen from the son of a prominent Swatara street resident and no trace of the thieves can be found.
