HAUPT Editor-in-Chief of SEVENTEEN Magazine If you're planning on holiday portraits this year, you can start now to be more photogenic. With a little groundwork before your posing date, you'll face the camera as professional models do. It's easy to insure a hairdo at its best, features accented for flattery and a mood that reveals your real personality. When a portrait has all these elements, it's truly a charming gift. -Here are 10 tips to make your photo-sitting successful: 1 1.

Pick a photographer with style, but be sure it's the style 1 you like. Some girls prefer the high-fashion look, others find it hard and stereotyped. So shop PLANS RETIREMENT LATIMER-Harold A. RYAN AP Special Correspondent The Indian-Red Chinese border conflict is enveloped in a strange jloud of unreality which seems to more puzzlement than pan- among the world's harried diplomats. It is. always possible that an armed conflict in Asia could develop into a general Asian war, which in turn would threaten to spawn World War III.

Already. he United States and Britain lave been involved in arming the Indians and buttressing them against the potentialities of Com munist attack. The Red Chinese in the event of a widespread war conceivably could call upon a reluctan" U.S.S.R. for military help. such dangerous possibili ties, one would expect loud cries around the world for United ions mediation of some sort.

But net hMMMd. One ets the impression that, few be- in the reality of the Indian- Chinese war, in spite of all the hooting. The tendency seems to be to regard it as a Red Chinese rpbe, an attempt to get some- hing for nothing, to pick up a piece of real estate and nail it down, to secure the borders of Tibet. But that is an extremely remote piece of real estate, and despite weighty discussions of military strategy and possibilities, it does not seem to have a great deal of mportance. The most nagging question about all this is: Why did the Red Chinese do it in the first peaceful coexistence to which even the Red Chinese give lip service.

Since, as real estate, the border area does not amount to a great deal, it would appear that there had to be better reasons. There probably are important reasons for the adventure from the viewpoint of Peking. For one thing, they are flexing their muscles, demonstrating that they are the power in Asia. For another, the state of the Red Chinese economy and its internal problems probably require some sort of aggressive movement to provide excuses for internal policies. Possibly, the Red Chinese never meant the action against the Indians to go beyond the general area of the disputed frontiers.

But place? Wear something "confident," whatever fashion makes you radiate poise. A simple evening dress or plain white blouse is usually the best choice, but if a favorite sweater makes you comfortable, by all means wear it! 4. Do a careful make-up. it simple, with base and powder to tone down shine, a medium shade of lipstick. Highlight your eyes with a bit of mascara, but skip eye shadow.

Add expression to light brows with pencil. 5. Pay timely attention to hair. Be sure your coif is at its most manageable stage. You're the best judge of how much time to allow between a shampoo-and- set and your photography date.

6. Keep jewelry to a minimum. A string of pearls is a popular choice, but don't wear one unless you're a pearl girl by nature. If you have a simple pin or necklace you're never without, let this be your signature. 7.

Try not to stare at the camera. Look away from the lens, then toward it just when the picture is snapped. This way, you'll avoid a hard, fixed gaze. 8. Know your face.

Try this model trick: Study yourself in a three-way mirror to discover which side of your face is most interesting, at what angle you look best. Discuss your ideas with the photographer--but be receptive to his suggestions, too. 9. Look at the camera at eye level. Unless you're trying for special effects, don't look up (this gives you a vacant, aimless air) or down (guaranteed to make you appear melancholy or sad).

10. -Avoid wearing a hat or even a headband. Both tend to harden your facial outline and cover your hair, which 'is one of the softest and most attractive features in any camera's eye. And remember, even if a professional photography silling is too much for your holiday bud- gel, home snapshots both i and prints can be cropped and enlarged to portrait size. For very little price, you can still manage gifts as pretty as a picture! NEW CUES FOR YOU If cold-weather feet arc perennially among your winter worries, bid them adieu by trcaling yourself to the furriest footwork in town, a two-toned slipper boot of thick, fleecy a i Choose yours in red or black with white.
