COME IN AND SEE TODAY ffe PER WEEK TRADE I YOUR OLD RANGE $085 2 ON SHOPPERS LANE This is how much Jean Pub- lique, French citizen, has seen his money, the franc, depreciate. The causes? Much the same as those that are at work on our American dollar, only in bigger doses, and at work over a. longer period of time. Therefore the French inflation has crept faster and farther than ours, says the family economics bureau of Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. Prices Soar French retail prices now aver age approximately 175 times what they were before World War II, the bureau says.

A 500-franc note was rich man's money in 1913; it a worth nearly 100 fat American dollars of 1913 buying power. By 1939 it was worth less than 13 American dollars. Today, since the recent further devaluation of the franc, an American tourist can get a 500-franc note in exchange $1.19 in 1957 American money. It is now the smallest French paper money in common use. The following are the principal I causes, says the bureau's report, which have made French franc a tiny fraction of its former self: Huge war costs, financed mostly by borrowing.

Waterloo bureau says. In recent months the French government has faced a mounting tide of indignant protests from millions of citizens as it set out to reduce government expenditures, tighten credit, and halt the wage-price cycle. The real problem of halting inflation, says the bureau, is the widespread popularity of the causes of inflation.
