Marcfi 1, mi OMw-Omftt, MIMII City, It. RED CROSS LIFE SAVING Red Cross swimming- and life saving in Cerro Gordo County operates all year. In winter, classes are held in the adult education program. During- the summer, the Red Cross sponsors a program at Clear Lake. A water safety council also has been organized.

John Duffy demonstrates the across-the-chest carry in life saving, after leveling the victim, Sally Griswold, in the water. It can be used with the inverted scissors kick and the shallow arm pull. "Glory of God" in music, concert series workers told "Music must be a very part of the diadem of Heaven--of the glory of God," Dr. George Triir man Carl of the First Methodist Church told those at Tuesday night's Mason City Community Concert Assn. campaign dinner.

Also at the dinner at the Green Mill, the group re-elected its officers for the coming year, with Lester Milligan as president, and elected six new board members. Dr. Carl, main speaker with his "ramblings about music," said: "I have come to the conclusion that music is an essential, indispensible part of every person's soul diet." Groups such as the Community Concert associations, he indicated, should reach persons of every sort to bring them the "constructive force in life" that music offers. DESCRIBING himself as "one who knows little or nothing about music," Dr. Carl told of his own search after good music--the result of a "passion and overwhelming love" that he began to feel in hearing some of the Public Works Administration's thousands of free concerts.

His pursuit as a young man led him, sometimes night after night, into 25-cent concert hall seats in Boston, and in later years into the concert halls and opera houses of Europe. In Europe, he recalled, he had a feeling of unity with the varied audiences and musicians in spite of language barrier -through a transfiguration by music of its listeners. Modern music such as that by Kern and Gershwin had a "haunting beauty," Dr. Carl said. Speaking of some of Meredith Willson's music, he said: "I believe he could have been one of our gerat symphony composers." FINALLY, Dr.

Carl said of the Community Concert series here, "I have yet to be disappointed by a single number." Re-elected officers in addition to Milligan are Dr. Carroll Adams, vice president; Mrs. John D. Vance, executive vice president; Dorothy Weston and P. 0.

Brunsvold, vice president, and Loretta Welsh, secretary-treasurer. for next year. Saturday, at the end of the brief membership campaign, there will be a board meeting to select additional artists to be on next season's series. A shortage of even 50 member families, he pointed out, would mean nearly $800 less for obtaining talent and could affect the programming. MRS.

R. E. NYQUIST was dinner chairman. Dr. T.

E. Davison gave the invocation. Dinner music was furnished by Mrs. Lowell Cook, pianist, with Mrs. Robert C.

Schultz, violinist. Mrs. Michael Savas sang three selections following the dinner, accompanied by Agnes Bennett at the piano. 'Mrs. Savas and Mrs.

David Smith received awards for a tie in obtaining of new members in the last compaign. Door prizes were won by Mrs. John A. Vance, Mrs. Cook, Murray C.
