The Braves' 10th consecutive victory gave them a three-game lead over second place San Francisco with two play, mathematically ousting the Giants. Carty's fly to right sent Felix Millan scampering home with the run that gave ace knuckle- baller Phil Niekro his 23rd vic- torv of the season--including six straight over the hard-hitting Reds. Hoyt Wilhelm, the 46-year-old relief specialist obtained by Atlanta for the September stretch drive, stymied the Reds over the last iv.o innings after Xiek- ro 23-13, left the game for a pinch hitter in the big seventh. With the Reds leading 2-1, Mike Lum opened the home seventh with a single to center and Ralph Garr, batting for Niekro, walked.

Wayne Granger, the Reds' record-setting bullpen ace, replaced starter Nolan and aot Felix Millan to bunt into a Force at third. But Tony Gonzalez singled to left, scoring Garr to tie the game 2-2. and after Hank walked to fill the bases, Carty deluered the winning sacrifice fly ATLANTA (AP) The Atlanta Braves, who led the torrid National League Western Division race for more than 100 days, finally captured the title in the last week by setting a blistering pace September. The closing flurry, which featured superb pitching, offset a mid-August slump that saw Atlanta fall into fifth place, but only three and one-half games from the top--its poorest position in the standings all season. The 46- year-old knuckleballer picked up two victories and two saves immediately after joining the club.

However, he won't be eligible for the playoffs. Trades for Orlando Cepeda iand Tony Gonzalez paid dividends for Atlanta. Cepeda led the club in game- winning hits with 15 and drove in more than 80 runs. When Gonzalez joined the club in June, he tripled in his first ba'urs; appearance at burgh and homered in his first when the team returned Atlanta Stadium. During his first three games, Atlanta scored 20 runs.

Steady Hank Aaron, the only Brave who played on the pennant-winners in Milwaukee, supplied the power by hitting 40 or more home runs for the sixth time in his 16-year career. Rico Carty, who missed the entire 1968 season with tuberculosis and had three shoulder separations and a leg injury this year, finally returned to the in July and hit near .340 the rest of the year. The Braves got strong fielding from second baseman Felix Mil- Ian, who led the club in base hits and missed only one inning, shortstop Gil Garrido and third baseman Clete Boyer. i Rookies Bob Didier established himself as a front-line catcher by working more than 100 games. The Mets won eight of the 12 regular season games with the Braves.

Cigar, ATLANTA, Ga. AP) The Atlanta Braves popped the corks on champagne that had been icing for two days Tuesday night, to win the National League West Division pennant. "Man, it's too good," said ace I relief pitcher Cecil Upshaw, I "Have a cigar. We just had a baby--it's called a pennant." Upshaw's enthusiasm is somewhat premature, since the Braves must first beat the New York Mets before they can claim the league pennant. "Don't worry about a thing, said Rico Carty, whose i seventh inning sacrifice fly I drove home the winning run.

Clete Boyer called the Braves the "greatest bunch of pros. At time did we think we were 'ever out of it." Manager Luman Harris, ask- 'ed if there were any way 'veteran Hoyt Wilhelm could be i made eligible for the playoffs, isaid he knew of none but "'if i to of ting runners at first and second at the start of Atlanta's winning I rally Niekro, who had five straight hits at 'the time, said Harris told him he hated to take him out but being one run behind had no choice. "We had to get a couple of runs and the main thing was to get some runners," Niekro said Fans poured out on the field at the last Cincinnati out, grabbing any Brave in sight. Confetti fluttered down all over the park. Firecrackers and Roman candles went off in the left field stands and, for a while, no fans left the park.

Carty, who battled back from a year-long illness and early- season injuries to play a major part in the Braves' drive for the division crown, was bubbling like the champagne.
