program winds up to- The clubs agreed to open the season Oct. 12. American League Box Scores MONTREAL appeared unlikely today that Bobby Hull will play on the hockey team representing Canada in next fall's series against the Soviet Union, despite the expressed wishes of Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and thousands of fans across the country. Hull was deemed ineligible Wednesday when it was revealed that only players signed to National Hockey League contracts before Aug. 13 could play on the Canadian team.

Hull, who was selected for the team as a member of his former club, the Chicago Black Hawks, recently signed a multimillion dollar contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the newly-formed World Hockey Association. Trudeau said Wednesday that "I hope will manage to have Bobby Hull in the lineup. He's such'a great player." However, Douglas Fisher, chairman of the executive committee of Hockey Canada, told Trudeau that the organization did not feel it could initiate an appeal to the NHL owners to have Hull declared eligible because the NHL might then cancel the entire long-awaited series. He told the prime minister that if the NHL owners approached Hockey Canada and offered to re-open the contract, it would be a different matter: Asked whether he would put the weight of the federal government into an appeal to the NHL owners, Trudeau said, think it's much better to rely on the skills of Hockey Canada and the pressure which may be put on the NHL from their end. In Montreal, NHL President Clarence Cavpbell said in a television interview late Thursday that "the matter is now completely out of my hands." A 'contract was entered between the NHL and Hockey Canada in May 1972 stating that only those players who have official NHL contracts before Aug.

13 will be eligible to play on this team. "I have nothing 10 do with the running of this team that will represent Canada. The only thing that I and the NHL board of governors made sure of is that the best players would be made available to them." Protests about Hull's ineligibility poured in quick and heavy from around the country. Hull said in Winnipeg that the decision would mean the NHL, and not Canada, would be playing the Russians. "They'll have to change the name the team (from Team Canada) to Hockey NHL," he said.

In Montreal, radio station CJAD launched a massive telegram campaign- asking Trudeau to intervene on Hull's behalf. Listeners were asked to come in and place their names on the telesram Toronto Maple Leafs president' Harold Ballard said "I don't give a damn if Hull signed with a team in China.
