Pat Murphy, secretary to the superintendent, said Wednesday's absences represent about 25 per cent of the total enrollment. The percentage was 29 per cent Monday and 27 per cent Tuesday. Absences in other schools in Mason City and Clear Lake were reported as declining or near normal. An Iowa State Department of Health announcement received Wednesday said that since Jan.

23 school absenteeism exceeding 10 per cent daily had been reported in Winneshiek, Worth, Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Winnebago, Montgomery, Cass, Ringgold, Muscatine, Johnson. Jasper and Polk counties, bringing the number of officially affected counties to 17. "Essentially all" parts of the state have been affected. The department said that the Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory recovered influenza virus type from testing of ill high school students in Iowa City. Although national Center for Disease Control test results are pending, there is evidence that the widespread ailment is epidemic influenza, the department said.

Drifting snow closes schools ST. ANSGAR Schools in St. Ansgar, Riceville and Cresco were shut down Wednesday due to snow drifts clogging many rural roads, according to a spokesman at St. Ansgar Community High School. The schools are expected to reopen Thursday.

Aukes, Lake Mills man charged in connection with the shooting of his wife in November, continued Wednesday in Winnebago County District Court. There were about 80 prospective jurors for the trial which started Tuesday. Edgar Cage with Surgical Associates Edgar S. Gage has become the administrator for Surgical Associates of North Iowa, P.C., the organization announced Wednesday.

Contributions toward the new kiln came from Ardismae Ceramics students; the North Iowa Ceramics Club, Cosmopolitan Club and a coffee club. The Cerro Gordo Easter Seal Society has obtained a new ceramics kiln for use at its center at 1513 S. Pennsylvania. The kiln, financed by club and individual contributions, replaces one that was smaller and which was worn out.

The kiln is used in craft work by seven young adults, age 16-23, who are among the handicapped persons making use of the center regularly.
