The Pharos Tribune Press, Looansport, Thuriday, July' 13, Nicklaus Struggling MUIRFIELD, Scotland (UPI) Johnny Miller, a 25-year-old Mormon from San Francisco, shot a crackling five-under par course record 66 today in the second round of the British Open Golf championship. Halves Of 32-34, a full 10 shots better than his opening round, hauled the tall American back to level par after 36 holes of a tournament that today was blessed with perfect weather conditions. While Miller was carving up the 6,892 yards par 71 course, tournament favorite Jack Nicklaus, the grand slam chaser, was struggling. Big Jack, who started the day trailing behind Britons Peter Tupling and Tony Jacklin after opening with a 70, had dropped three strokes after 10 holes today. Nicklaus recovered wnn birdies at the llth and 13th to be the 1966 championship, highlighted his round with a double- eagle two at the 558 yards par five 5th hole.

He also birdied the par four sixth to reach the turn in four under par. A birdie three at the 12th plus eight pars got him home in 34. "Funny enough, the last tournament I played, the Western Open, it was the same Miller said. "So I went out there to freewheel today." He said the double eagle was "the first I've ever shot, and it was a real thrill something I'll remember all my life." He hit a drive of 280 yards and faded a three-wood about ar. equal distance which pitched short and ran on into the cup.

"I knew it was a good shot, but there were no cheers like when Arnie (Palmer) belts one, so I wondered what was up. It was only when I got to the hole that I realized what had happened," Miller said. His birdie at the next came when he canned a 40-foot putt. "That really got me charged up and I knew I was back in the tournament." The birdie at the 12th was earned by a great wedge to within 3 feet of the cup. "The course really should be playing very easily in these conditions Miller said." But the pin positions for today's round are incredibly particularly at 16, which is the toughest I've ever seen anywhere in the worl.

It's right on a crest and you've just got to use your head all the time." Miller beamed. "I'm real happy. I'm back in the tournament and that's where I wanted to be. Legion Blanks Broadripple STEINMAN FIELD-The Logansport American legion team got behind a sizzling pitching performance by Dave Snyder to wash Broadripple 10-0 in a baseball contest here Wednesday evening. Snyder hurled near perfect ball through the nine innings giving up only two hits. He didn't issue a walk through the entire game while fanning 10. Broadripple managed only three base runners through tne game including the two who reached base on hits. The other base runner reached first on I x)gansport's only error in the contest in the eighth inning.

Nono of the Broadripple runners reached second safely. Meanwhile red hot bats cracked out the hits and didn't quit until eight had been recorded on the board. Logan has counted 51 hits in its last five games. The locals started it off in the third inning combining one hit with two walks and a Broadripple error for three runs. Ix)gansport added another in the seventh and six big ones in the eighth frame to walk off with the victory.

The big win gives Ixjgan a 16-6 record for the season and a string of six straight wins. lagan's last loss Duane Thomas Leaves Dallas Training Camp THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (1'f-T) Controversial Dallas Cowboys running back Duane Thomas, fined Wednesay for reporting several hours late to the team's training site, early today walked out of camp without any explanation, A Dallas Cowboys spokesman said the team presumed the Super Bowl star was somewhere in I.QS Angeles. "Thomas and friend were last seen headed south in a rented car," the spokesman said. "Nobody even (Cowboys Coach) Tom I.andry—knows where they are right now." Thomas, who has been renegotiating a three-year contract with team president Tex Schramm for the past few months, was to have reported during the afternoon Wednesday along with other Cowboys veterans.

Thomas, however, told a driver sent to pick him up at a Ixis, Angeles airport 40 miles north of the team's training the airline had lost some of his baggage and that he was staying over to retrieve it. "Duane missed rollcall for iiur team and he will be fined like any other player," Landry said at that time. Later in the evening, Thomas called camp and asked for another driver. He arrived at California Lutheran College a couple of hours later with Redic Price, a rookie football player who had cut by the Cowboys several days before. "The two met with Tom I-andry and talked Price doing most of the talking," the spokesman said.

said he wasn't sure what Thomas wanted but sent him and Price out for dinner at a local restaurant." According to the spokesman, Thomas then rented a car and left with Price. "Coach wants to talk with Thomas before he makes a decision regarding him," he said. "But Thomas of course will be fined." The only other Cowboys veterans missing the mandatory roll call were offensive tackle Tony Liscio and linebacker D. D. Lewis.

I-ewis was excused for college classes and was expected to arrive in camp Saturday. Liscio announced his retirement. "Tony has contributed a lot to our success over the years." Landry said, "and his contribution last year was particularly outstanding." Liscio. who ended retirement at mid-season last year to help out when injuries cut into the offensive line ranks, was a mainstay with the Cowboys through the Supr Bowl. "We were in trouble last year and he came in without having time to really get in shape," Landry said.

"It was a courageous performance. You always miss a learn player like; Tonv." was on July 2 to Remington. Mike Dimmel and Jeff Steinman carried the big bats for Logansport. Dimmel counted a pair of singles and Steinman added a double and a single to lead the offense. Logansport's bats were being pretty well in check through the first portion of the contest and didn't really get going until the third.

Bob Simons, Logan's catcher, boomed a run producing double in the contest. Starting Broadripple hurler, Steve Bohnert, was jerked after three in favor of Ron Edgecomb and the locals had more luck with the second pitcher. Ix)gan sent 10 men to the plate in the eighth frame and scored its six runs on two hits and three Broadripple errors. travels to Valparaiso on Saturday for a twinbill which is set to begin at 1 p.m. Brosdrippic Umm 000 000- 0 2 5 Logansport 003 000 10 8 1 Bohner'.
