AP photo Erasmus James (90) sacks Illinois' Jon Beutjer in a Big Ten game last season. James, who played at Wisconsin, was a first-round pick of the Vikings. "There have been some pretty hot days out there, and he's missed some of them," Cottrell said, "and they're going to let him know that." He paused. "We're waiting for him to get here, too," Cottrell said. The best approach seems to be a bring-it-on attitude.

"I'm always ready for anything," James said. "It really doesn't bother me." James, taken with the 18th overall pick, has been staying in shape with twice-a-day workouts at a training facility in Arizona for elite athletes, and he soaked up Cottrell's scheme as much as he could during minicamp and developmental camp practices this spring. "I haven't put on pads in about a year, so that will be the biggest thing," James said. "After a few days of that, it all kind of equals out." But coach Mike Tice has already made it clear that James will no longer be slotted in as the starter in nickel pass-rush situations, so he has plenty to do during the rest of August. "You've got to work to get to that point anyway, so I felt like I'm at the same place I was when I first got here," James said.

Jean Marinos Jean Marinos, Mayor ATTEST: Pat McGarvey Pat McGarvey, Interim City Clerk MANKATO, Minn. (AP) Rookie defensive end Erasmus James signed his contract and got ready to join the Minnesota Vikings for a full-contact practice on Tuesday night. The first-round draft pick from Wisconsin spoke confidently about his conditioning as well as his ability to make up for the 10 days of training camp he missed. But James can't expect an overly warm welcome this week, considering his place in the pecking order.

Defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell laughed at the thought of the reception James would likely receive. "Oh, they're going to kill him," he said. "They're waiting for this guy. He'll probably be singing before every meal." James' agents finalized particulars of the deal essentially a five-year package worth $9.8 million including about $7.5 million in guaranteed money plus some back-loaded incentives that could raise the total value to $12.3 million on Tuesday morning. "I think both sides are at peace," he said.

"No bitterness at all." The contract didn't get Rolle, Cards agree to six-year deal PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) Antrel Rolle, the kind of aggressive, physical defender coveted by Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green, agreed to a six-year contract with the team Tuesday. The University of Miami cornerback, the Cardinals' first-round draft selection, missed nine days of training camp, including 14 practices and a mock game. But he arrived in the Phoenix area Tuesday morning, had a physical and was area. But Stickel also cautioned that most people have only so much money to spend on entertainment.

"I think it has the potential either way, to help or hurt," he said. "We're all competing for the same entertainment dollars." Ralph Capitani, director of racing at Knoxville, said he's not worried about competition from the Newton track. He wonders if the new track will even make it. "If they do, their first year will be relatively successful because people will go out of curiosity," Capitani said. "But the caliber of racing they're going to have is not the kind to sell $50 tickets to and get a big crowd from Iowa." He also wonders how many serious dirt track fans want to watch racing on asphalt.

"You don't find many crossovers in Iowa," Capitani said. NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace, who helped design Iowa Speedway, disagrees. He thinks there are plenty of fans interested in watching both. "With having not one race track but two race tracks this close, that gives much more things to do for the fans," Wallace said at groundbreaking ceremonies for the Newton track earlier this summer. "The fans can make a week of it now.

Instead of coming to a race, they can come to an event, a happening." Newton Mayor Chaz Allen sees such an arrangement as ideal for everyone. "You talk about having a big race in Newton one weekend and then a big race in Knoxville the next weekend, you're talking almost two weeks of having a lot people in this little area." And there's no way, Melfi said, the Newton track would schedule an event at the same time as the Knoxville Nationals, which is the country's richest and most prestigious sprint car race and draws crowds of 30,000 for the Saturday night finals. "We would be stupid to try to go against that," Melfi said. Iowa Speedway will become the latest venue competing for entertainment dollars in central Iowa. The recently opened Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines is trying to book big-name acts and major events and will have a minor-league hockey team, the Iowa Stars, playing a 40-game home schedule. Plus, there's the Iowa Cubs, the Prairie Meadows racetrack and Adventureland amusement park, the Iowa State Fair, auto racing at the Fairgrounds, regular races at Knoxville and Oskaloosa, the Knoxville Nationals and the IMCA Super Nationals at Boone each September.

Too many events? Not really, in Melfi's view. "I think Iowans are searching for additional things to do," he said. "I don't think they're overextended. When you talk about the addition of the arena, the Iowa Stars, Iowa Speedway, we're just building the state of Iowa and the area in and around Des Moines closer to what the larger markets have." Others aren't so sure. Brian Stickel, who heads the Knoxville Chamber and Economic Development Growth Alliance, said the Newton track could help the Knoxville Raceway by bringing more racing fans into the KNOXVILLE: Wallace says Knoxville, Newton tracks should be able to coexist done in time, however, for him to participate in practice under some of the muggiest Mason City Room August 2, 2005 Mason City, Iowa 7:00 P.M.

Both will be at this year's Nationals, which start next Wednesday. "I think Knoxville and some of the smaller tracks will lose to the Newton track," Beal said. "But I think it depends on the pricing and stuff there. I do like the sprints. I like NASCAR, too." The first races at Iowa Speedway are expected to be from the ARCA series, a stock car circuit that's a stepping stone to NASCAR's Busch and Nextel Cup races.

The U.S. Auto Club also has expressed interest in racing on the Newton track, a 78-mile asphalt oval, and track officials eventually would like to land IRL, Busch or Craftsman Trucks races. But track manager Todd Melfi insists Iowa Speedway is not out to overrun Knoxville and the other dirt tracks in the area. Melfi believes there are plenty of racing fans to go around and sees the tracks working together. Iowa Speedway officials plan to meet with other track operators to get the dates of their prime races so they can find dates that won't conflict, if it's in their power.

Television sometimes dictates when races are run, Melfi noted. "Whether it's a small dirt track in the middle of a field or the Knoxville track or up the ladder to the Iowa Speedway, it's not good for the industry if any track gets hurt. We understand that," Melfi said. "If bigger tracks had the mentality that we don't care about the small tracks, let's step on them and squash.
