The Bank has shared but little in the? discount business; and on llio Stock Exchange tho demand for shortloans on Consols has fallen off, the rate having deolincd to li to 2 per cent. In tho stock markets the commencement of the holiday season has had tho usual effeot of thinning attendance of members, and there has to-day been remarkably little businoss done, oven for a Saturday. The opening prices -were dull from want of support simply, but an improved tendency succeeded, resultiug, in one or two departments, in slightly firmer figures at the close in some stocks, Tho English funds were steady. Consols show no change for money, at to but the price for the account is 1-10 lower, at to J.

In home railways there has been hardly anything doing, and prices, with one or two exceptions, aro about the same as at last night's closing. The market opened dull, and remained so to tho lost. Tho directors of the Ebcrhardt and Aurora MinloR Company (Limited) havo.thia morning received tho following telegram from Captain Drake: "1,010 tons crashed during An ffust, producing average assay, 63 dollars per Mine looking Tlie following is from Messrs. J. Bergcr Spanpa and Weekly Mineral and Motal Report: MixekalsJ IntolHsrenoa from the coal districts is anything but eneouraging: however, opinion as to future probabilities must be deferred until we have the minutes of the next meeting of co'il-owncrs. In the meantime inquiry continues unabated at unchanged prices. In iron ore there has been littlo doing.

In copper ores mid regulus higher prices have ruled. At the last 8wnn3ea tickctings, prices to arrive wove somewhat higher than the highest paid for immediate deliver-, plainly indicating, that the upward tendenoy of rates is not quite spent. On tho 31st of lust moDth stocks in Liverpool and Swansea were unimportant, and no new arrivals have sinco been reported. The demand for manganese continues good) high prices havo opened now sourccsof supply; but their yields have not influenced ouv market, its they mostly consist of inferior quality for which there is ft vety limited demand. In antimony 010 good qualities have had a ready sale.

Mktals. The natisfactory progress of tho iron trade has been slightly checked by the recent advices from tho eonl centres. Whilst in some tho inovitablo is recognised and submitted to, in others it is stubbornly ignored and opposed, a threatening attitude being thought i.flicient to meet llio demands of tho musters, The ill-advised will no doubt sooner or later givo in, but waiting that consummation the trade continues extremely unsettled. Wo think, however, that confidence in tho uturo has no less justification now than it had a week ago. Both merchants' and consumers' Btocks aro low, and the few contracts in tho conreo of ullilment nro scarcely sufficient to cover tho incoming orders for finished iron.

The depression in the Scotch pig iron market continues. Steel manufacturers are fully employed, especially for American account, nnd tho activity in this branch has increased tho demand for hematite, though not to any great extent. In other metals business has been much moro animated. Copper has been in good request, and large tnuisoctions are reporteed at advanced rates. Tho slight dulnoss which characterised tho market yesterday has not been attended by ahyiidl of Lead has been steady.

Tin a littlo easier, tho price of English being rather lower. In spelter business has been prices firm. 2s. 9d. goslings', to 3s.

The presence of the Inttcr accounted for the fact that there is again ft fair inquiry after low pilots. The busiest of all departments is tweeds. In spite of denials weneed only lefcr to tho activity of the largo mnlters, who.aro almost without exception busy, while small men cannot compete with them at tho prices. Cdstumcs keep a good position, but tho trade lies within comparatively few hands. Fancy coatings for the fall trade have at last begun to stir but this is a branch forwhioh amuch wider development still isneeded. Tho ail-wool houses aro moderately busy.

The niost saleable of black unions are tho lowc-Bt qualities. Employment as a rule is-good throughout the district. Spanish oil iB 10s. lower since-lost Saturday. WOOL AND WORSTED.

Biudford, Sept. B. Tho, wool market has, for some days past, boen characterised by a stronger tone 'consequent' on the higher rates obtained at liristol fair, Prices in tho country nro higher than they were a week ago, and wool cannot bo brought to this inhrkct with any prospeot of its being disposed of at a profit. Staplers have consequently been obliged to seek an adviuieain their quotations! bat they find operations greatly restricted by the higher rates. SpinnCrsiaro generally well supplied, and purchase only under tho of actual necessity.

A fair amount of business might be done at late rates, and this ha3 been partioularly manifest in lustre, in Irish wethers', in Keuts, and in all good demi-lustrc wools. The better class of noils continue in good request. The yarn market hos an improved tone, Mid there i moro inquiry in both single nnd twofold yarns, but as spinners, following the higher rates of the raw matoriul, have advanced their quotations, tho demand continues limited. The samo remarks will apply to lustre and coloured yarns, A small- business has besn done in ge-nappo. yarns.

Tho piece market has a rather hopeful aspect. The American merchants have made inquiry rather more freely, and, though the business result is small, yet there is a hopo of returning animation before long. Some' unimportant contracts have been placed on home account. A restricted buBincsB has been dotio for Gemiiny and tho Continent. Thohigh price of tho raw material tends to render quotations stiff.

HARDWARE. Bibuinoiiah, Sept. Tho demand for hardware continues steady nnd although some complaints of tho shortness of orders are still heard, manufacturers as a vule have aiiilleientemployineut'tilltho end of tho Most of. the orders received arc for immediate delivery and owing to the scarcity and restriction of labour, there is, in some cases, considerable difficulty in executing- them in the timo stipulated by purchasers. Tho homo trade is still reported gaod as regards the agricultural districts, but 'in the towns "trado is Eomowlmt depressed.

The colonial demand for varices clnsscn of ironmongery continues good. The Canadian nnd United States are better customers for hardware than was the cuse a few months, ago. On Coutinental aecount there is very littlo doing, Russia' being perhaps the best oustomer 'at present, though tho indents received from there aro' by no means large. Manufacturers of machinery, hollow ware, nuts and boltB, and brtisBfounders aro busy; but the most of tho orders 011 their books, are said to be for delivery during the present quarter. A largo quantity of machinery ia for North Europo, and juust'bb delivered before tho close, of tho present navigation season.

chnncuse. lait. Sporting Colliers, The colliers aro advancing rapidly on the path of refinement and civilization, and it must he an enormous consolation to thoso whose limited means cause them to gaze mournfully at the liBt of high prices still quoted for coal to find that their money is not thrown away. They can hardly, it is true, provide warmth and food for themselves aud their families but tho sous of toil aro at last ablo to supply themselves with, some of tho most pressing oodB of existence shooting, for instance and a very'pleasing example of the improved comfort of the working mau in this respect is afforded by the case of two colliers, John and Edward Sommerville, who wore charged at Hamilton the other day with having, on the 12th oi August, trespassed in pursuit of game on the lauds of Fortisset, tho property of Mr. John Meek.

The Messrs. Sommerville admitted the soft impeachment, but it Tviin etatod for thorn that they wore not in any souse of the word to ho understood as poachers. They each held an ordinary game licence, aud were iri the habit of tnldm: annually a iiold or moor. For some time past they had'loased tho shootings over Bollside, which adjoined thoso of Fortisset, and in crossing to their own field Ihey wont through Mr. Meek's.

If any birds had crossed their path the temptation might perhaps have been to groat to resist, but all they had actually done 'was to commit an act of trespass. The fine under these eir-oumotances was restricted to with 1, lus. of expenses, or fourteen days of imprisonment. Many a member of the learned professions who never oould, nor ever will he able to tako a moor," and is even thankful if any kind friend will send him occasionally a brace of grouse to'mitigato slightly the feorrors of bis butcher's bill, will no doubt envy these gentlemen cftlliors, who not only supply the fuel for the kitchen grate, but kill tho game that roasts before it. The Old Newgate Wall. The workmeii in the employ of Messrs. Mowlem, Freeman, and Burt have been making excavations for now houses in Newgate-street, opposite tho gaol end. In tho course of the work a considerable portion of the old Newgate wall hae been brought to light. The excavations run at a depth of uhout ten feet, nnd tho wall is seen from the bottom of this trench nearly up to the level of tho street in some places, being embedded in the earth under tho street.

Alost of it will not be interfered with, as it is only necessary to cover it with brickwork for tub new houses which are to bo ercctod on the spot. In one part of it there is an arched subway leading across the street to the prison, and backwards in tho direction of the old Compter. Iusido this subway an old arohed sower of hriokwork up-pears to have been made at some subsequent period to that of tho on'sinal stonowork of the passage, the intervening space being filled up with earth. The wall is composed of rough pieces of Kentish rag or Some srmilar stone, with flinty pieces of stone from the chalk hills, mixed with rubble, the whole having been originally grouted together. It has sot so hard length of tune that tho mou savitis now much, harder than their own concrete.
