Hi 3- "i1 1' I T'r'H1 1 16 Jun 19, 1975 Maicn City, lowt In skyscraper, all sports questions answered turned out that Don Hudson had set the record with 95, but I realized that Tommy McDonald had 93 until the Dallas Cowboys were short of defensive backs for the last game of the 1964 season. He played defense in that game instead of offense and didn't catch a pass. But nobody realized he had a shot at the record because nobody knew the record existed then. Since then Dan Abramowicz has broken Hudson's record with 105 consecutive games but Tommy McDonald caught a pass in 16 more consecutive games. He's have the record with 109 if it hadn't been for that game.

I saw him a few years ago and I had to tell him. It broke my heart." It wasn't Seymour Siwoff's fault. It just took the NFL too long to turn on the fountain. we came up with the right guys so far. Armstrong led the NFL in rushing and average yards per carry.

McAdoo scored more points than anybody since Wilt, and Parent's performance against a hisiory of goal tenders was better than the hockey scorers did against their standards." Although most of his staff's' work is done by hand, Siwoff also is using a computer now. "We've been commissioned to do some very exotic things with baseball in the computer," he said. But just as Seymour Siwoff gets enthused over new statistics, he also can be saddened. "Several years ago, he said, "I was working on the NFL records for catching at least one pass in consecutive garnes. It am Iowa Sfafe cage assistant gets head job WARRENSBURG, Mo.

(AP) Tom Smith, assistant basketball coach at Iowa State for the past four years, has been named head coach at Central Missouri State. Smith, 30, played basketball at Valparaiso under Gene Bartow, who has just assumed the head coaching job at UCLA. Smith stayed on as an assistant at Valparaiso for four years, then moved to Drake to work under Maury John. Smith, who also holds a master's degree from Indiana State, went with John Tom Smith He 's hired by Central Missouri to Iowa State, but spent the past year as Coach Ken Trickey's assistant following John's death. "Tom is extremely well qualified for the job," Trickey said Wednesday.

"He will do outstanding work for Central Missouri State." "You always like to see people who work for you get good jobs." Trickey said. "We hate to lose him, but it is a great opportunity for him." Smith, who will assume his new duties July 1, was named Wednesday to succeed Jim Campen, who resigned recently. winked and smiled. "The endless challenge." he said. Seymour Siwoff was 19 years old in 1939 when his endless challenge began. He went to work for $13 a week at the Al Munro Elias Baseball Bureau, which then kept only the National League baseball statistics. He entered the Army in World War II and was wounded in the Italian campaign.

But not long after his discharge, he took over the bureau, kept the name out of respect for his original employer, but later expanded to pro football and pro basketball statistics. "Babe Ruth, Johnny Unitas and Jim Brown, and Wilt Chamberlain set the standards in their sports," Siwoff said. "Most records are measured against those Those standards have been. important to Siwoff in a new project determining the winners in seven sports for $10,000 prizes awarded by the Seagram distillers. Three have been announced Otis Armstrong, Bob McAdoo and Bernie Parent; still to be determined are winners in baseball, golf, tennis and horse racing (jockeys).

"They compete against a standard of excellence," Siwoff said. "We've got more information on sports up here in our office than they do down there," Seymour Siwoff was saying. "We're the greatest single fountain of information in sports. We admit it." Seymour Siwoff flaunts it because he's got it the fountain from which flow the statistics of baseball's major leagues, the National Football League and the National Basketball Asocation. To some people the flow might seem like a flood.

But to Seymour Siwoff the 54-year-old president and owner of the Elias Sports Bureau, sports statistics deserve as much respect as the athletes who create them. The "sacredness of accuracy," he calls it. And now that sacredness has been embellished by sunlight. For four decades, the Elias staff toiled in gloomy caves next to dim airshafts. Now in their new suite of midtown ofices, Seymour Siwoff's tabulators are blinking in the sunlight like startled owls.

"And the sirens, we never heard the sirens before. We've got nine people here, including myself. It's the toughest team in sports to make. I thought we had enough people until Steve Hirdt came along." Siwoff said, sounding like a baseball manager raving about a rookie phti-om. "We had to make room for It's got the toughest hours, too.

The office is open as much as 18 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Every so often Siwoff is confronted by a parent touting an offspring as a walking sports encyclopedia. "But we don't want the kid who knows every recrod. We don't want anybody spouting statistics here. Our motto is look it up." Seymour Siwoff prefers to be confronted by a question.

Slimmer than the old-fashioned ledgers that fill his shelves he has a Groucho Marx moustache and a teenagers's enthusiasm. And now, in answering his phone, he was enthused. "Sandy Koufax and Al Kaline." His office doesn't answer questions from fans. But it does cooperate with sports writers and other media people. From past experience, he had mentioned Koufax and Kaline off the top of his head, but now he frowned.

"Mel Ott," somebody offered. "Bob Feller," anothe said. "That's right," Siwoff agreed. "I think Feller signed with a minor league team but never acutally pitched in the minors. Let me check their player sheets." Using pinch runner in Midwest League BURLINGTON (AP) The Class A Midwest League is using the designated pinch runner rule for the 1975 season on a trial basis.

The league said here Tuesday that the rule has had just a "so-so effect" so far. The league said some managers like the rule, some don't. John manager of the Wisconsin Rapids Twins, says of the rule: "It has some merit, but I don't think it's the answer to what we're trying to do to basball." He says one thing the rule does is keep starting pitchers off the bases. FISH CHICKEN FRY COMPUTE $25 DINNER 5:30 to 10 P.M. Fri.
