Buffalo acquires 'Tiny' Archibald, trades Dantley PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) Nate "Tiny" Archibald, who in 1972-73 became the only player to lead the National Basketball Association in scoring and assists in the same season, has been traded by the Nets to the Buffalo Braves. The 6-1 Archibald, a guard, played in just 34 games for the Nets the past season. He missed the Nets' final 48 games due to a broken foot and was dealt to Buffalo Thursday for center George Johnson and a first-round choice in the 1979 draft. Archibald had come to the Nets prior to last season in a deal with the Kansas City Kings in exchange for guard Brian Taylor, center Jim Eakins and two No.

1 draft choices. Before his injury, Archibald averaged 20.5 points and had 254 assists. Johnson, a 6-11 center, began the 1976-77 campaign with Golden State, where he failed to beat out Clifford Ray and Robert Parish at center. In mid-season, he was dealt to Buffalo for a 1977 top draft choice but finished the year with 177 blocked shots sixth-best in the NBA. "Tiny's contract is not as much as advertised." said Braves owner John Y.

Brown, who earlier Thursday acquired forward Billy Knight, the NBA No. 2 scorer last season, from Indiana. In exchange, the Braves gave up 1976-77 rookie of the year Adrian Dantley and forward Mike Bantom. WP 'If I 'LaS. muA Xi.

The big news was in Omaha, where the Royals dropped an 8-0 no-hitter to the Iowa Oaks. The Bears, who meet the Royals for a best-of-seven series beginning in Denver Friday night, lost to Wichita 7-5, finishing in the final standings just a game ahead of Wichita and Oklahoma City. In other action, Oklahoma City pounded New Orleans, 11-3 and Indianapolis dropped Evansville, 9-4. Chris Knapp and Fred Howard combined for the no-hitter at Omaha.

Knapp went the first four innings, striking out eight and retiring the last 12 batters he faced after giving up a leadoff walk to Ken Melvin. Knapp was to report Friday to the parent Chicago White Sox, and was under orders to work "only a few innings." Howard, who retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced, had two close calls. In the seventh, Charlie Beamon's liner was snagged by first baseman Jay Johnson on a diving catch. Howard protected his gem himself when he snared a smash off the bat of Brian Murphy in the eighth. Come back here Tackle Jackie Slater of the Los Angeles Rams eyes the ball but can't get it after his quarterback, Pat Haden, fumbled when hit by San Diego's Ler-oy Jones (left) in Los Angeles Thursday night.

The Chargers recovered and scored a moment later en route to a 26-25 NFL pre-season win. fx Li Harris, Rodgers spork Chargers Archibald Dantley stellar performance by Rodgers. After four seasons in the Canadian league, the Heisman Trophy winner from Nebraska came back to the National Football League and the coaches, fans and players are equally impressed. "That Rodgers is unbelievable," declared Harris. "That one catch he made, I don't see how anybody could have made it." Harris had thrown to Rodgers on a play where Harris had been introduced for three seasons.

Even as a Charger, he was cheered on introduction and he thought, "That's one of the great cheers I've had." The 30-year-old Harris responded with two touchdown passes in the first quarter one going nine yards to Chuck Bradley and the second seven yards to Johnny Rodgers. The Chargers won. 26-25, at the final gun, thanks not only to Harris but to a Sports briefs starting at the Rams' 34. Rodgers made a diving catch at the 20, retained his balance and went in for the touchdown. Then in the final minute, it was Rodgers who hauled in a 16-yard pass from Harris that gave the Chargers the ball at the three and set the situation for Tony Fritsch's 22-yard field goal just at the gun.

Rodgers caught five passes for 80 yards. He returned three kickoffs for 74 and he brought two punts back 25. That totalled 179 for his night's work before the 55,946 in Memorial Coliseum. Pat Haden, the former University of Southern California star who took over for Harris with the Rams late in the 1976 season, brought the Rams back from the 14-0 deficit with touchdown passes covering 32 yards to Terry Nelson and nine to Harold Jackson. The Rams went ahead on a safety and led 25-23 into the final minute before Fritsch hit his second field goal of the game the first having come in the second period on a 36-yard boot at the gun of the first half.

Coach Tommy Prothro's Chargers are now 3-2 in the preseason while the Rams of Chuck Knox, who succeeded Prothro here, are 1-4. St. Louis is the only NFL team without a pre-season victory so far. LOS ANGELES (AP) James Harris was bitter despite his earnest efforts to hide his feelings. As the first black quarterback to gain and hold regular status in the National Football League, he felt the Los Angeles Rams were wrong to demote him late in 1976.

He wasn't unhappy when the Rams traded him to the San Diego Chargers, and he set about earning a starting job there. On Thursday night, the Chargers invaded the Rams' Coliseum home field. How much was Wilkes worth? OAKLAND (AP) Larry O'Brien, the National Basketball Assocation's commissioner, has heard arguments from both sides and now must decide whether a high draft choice is sufficient compensation due the Golden State Warriors for the loss of forward Jamaal Wilkes. The Los Angeles Lakers, who signed Wilkes as a free agent in July, proposed giving up a first-round choice in the next college player draft as payment to Golden State. The teams made their arguments before O'Brien at a hearing Thursday in New York.

The commissioner is to get a transcript of the 3-hour session early next week, but there was no indication how soon he would make a ruling. Confracf hassle keyed trade INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Adrian Dantley physical strength and contract problems with Billy Knight were key factors in the Indiana Pacers" decision to send Knight to Buffalo as part of a two-for-one deal, said Pacers' coach Bobby Leonard in announcing the deal. "I definitely believe we came out best," Leonard said Thursday after bringing Dantley, the National Basketball Association's Rookie of the Year the past season, and Mike Bantom here in exchange for the NBA No. 2 scorer in 1976-77. "We received two quality players who can start for us and any time you can get two starters for one, I figure you've improved your team," said Leonard.

Dantley will be returning to the state where he earned All-America honors as a junior at Notre Dame. The 6-5 forward, who skipped his senior year in college, averaged 20.3 points per game as a rookie last season while making 52 per cent of his shots from the field.
