gracious in defeat See Page 6 Anatomy of winning drive See Page 6 By TRACY DODDS Times Staff Writer The Rose Bowl game on New Day 1983 was Tom Rose Bowl game Not just because he was the quarterback who' led UCLA to a 24-14 victory over Michigan Not just because he is one of the many seniors topping off a 10-1-1 season with a dream victory before 104991 on what just this season became the home field It was Tom game because it was so much like Tom Ramsey He made the game his game played it his way and it went his way It even adopted his personality much But like Ramsey the Bruin victory was solid and impressive No flash no drama no nonsense no doubt Even Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler who lost to Ramsey and the Bruins for the second time this season was impressed He said credit they never turned the ball over To credit they ran the ball pretty well on us To credit they drove A routine touchback put the Bruins on the 20 and from there Ramsey launched what for him this season could be called a routine drive On third-and-10 from the UCLA- 20 after two incomplete passes Ramsey made a pinpoint perfect pass to flanker Jojo Townsell at the left sideline good for 12 yards On third-and-five from the UCLA 37 Ramsey made another pinpoint perfect pass to Townsell at the right sideline good for 10 yards On second-and-eight from the UCLA 49 Ramsey found all his receivers covered considered for a moment then scrambled for 15 yards On second-and-eight from the Michigan 34 Ramsey found wide receiver Cormac Carney for the first time firing a bullet 11 yards to hit Carney between defensive back Jerry Burgei and linebacker Mike Boren Tailback Kerin Nelson gained nine yards on the next play and tailback Frank Cephous gained five for the Please see UCLA Page 6 the ball 80 yards on us and scored just after we had closed to within three Then we were down by 10 again That drive took us out of the That drive had the Ramsey touch all the way It was in the third quarter and Michigan had just scored on a fourth down pass play from stand-in quarterback David Hall to another unlikely hero fullback Eddie Garrett GEORGE ROSE Los Angeles Times UCLA Coach Terry Donahue raises his arm in triumph as he's given a ride after Rose Bowl win Paterno Takes Sweet With Bitter 27-23 By MIKE LITTWIN Times Staff Writer NEW In case the point was lost on anyone as his players carried him off the field Penn State Coach Joe Paterno raised a finger to the sky indicating that he at last was No 1 There can be little room for doubt this time no further disappointments Not when Penn State second ranked in the country has beaten top-rated Georgia 27-23 in the Sugar Bowl "I hope nobody doubts it after Paterno said Saturday night in the Superdome beat three or four of the top five football teams in the country This is the best team I ever had three unbeaten teams in 17 years at Penn State but none of them was voted No 1 by the pollsters who decide such matters Once even a President lobbied against him But this time Penn State had a chance to win it on the field It looked like it might be easy when the Nittany Lions built a 20-3 lead Suffice it to say it There was question until the final minute in a game that eventually nearly lived up to its billing In the end it was Penn offensive balance and that made the difference Penn State tailback Curt Warner ran for 117 yards and quarterback Todd Blackledge threw for 228 including a 47-yard strike to Gregg Garrity in the fourth quarter The touchdown pass gave Penn State a 27-17 advantage a lead it could not lose Warner plagued by leg cramps for much of the night in hot indoor stadium outrushed the more heralded Herschel Walker who got 103 yards on 28 carries confirms what said that they have one of the best best offensive teams seen since been coachings Please see PENN STATE Page 17 Jim Murray If Bo Loses It Must Be a Rose Bowl Not one of your vintage Rose Bowl games I mean once again nobody ran the wrong way nobody fumbled on the goal line only to have the referee signal a touchdown anyway It will not be remembered in the same breath with the year the Four Horsemen came to Pasadena No one came off the bench a la Doyle Nave or Antelope A1 Krueger to retrieve a lost cause in the final seconds It was just the football equivalent of a pretty good club fight a $20000 claiming race not the Kentucky Derby a card game in the firehouse not Nick the bucking the house Hurry Up Yost would be bound to misunderstand His Point-A-Minute teams used to win Rose Bowl games 49-0 in contests shortened to three periods in the interest of mercy Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler is now becoming a legend in his own time in Rose Bowl lore now lost six Rose Bowl games in a little over a decade and has a chance to make the world forget the Minnesota Vikings team lost its best tackle on the third play of the game and its only quarterback in the second quarter of the game Michigan a good enough team to write off those kinds of losses and the kid who came in to quarterback was in the words of his coach guy who has never had to win a game in his life and now asked to win the David Hall is a decathlete by athletic preference whose chief function on squad up to now has been to mop up in 52-14 games and warm up the receivers in spring practice drills The flower of American journalism was prepared to make the press box awash with allusions if Hall came Please see MURRAY Page 21 Associated Press Steve Smith (left on sidelines) goes down and out of game after a tackle by UCLA's Don Rogers (7) Mr Rogers' Neighborhood It Wasn't a Friendly Place for Some Tourists From Michigan Mcllhenny and SMU Make a Pitch for No 1 Ranking and Beat Pittsburgh 7-3 By BOB OATES Times Staff Writer On their most important football afternoons this season Southern undefeated Mustangs played only as well as they had to play to win narrowly or on one occasion tie Arkansas And their final game was a struggle Saturday as usual But against passing team it was running team that got off the big pass to knock out the Panthers in the Cotton Bowl 7-3 Quarterback Lance Mcllhenny threw it 42 yards to reserve split end Bobby the sophomore known as the Miracle to set up the only touchdown on a cold rainy day The touchdown came a moment later in the fourth quarter on nine -yard keeper And on the first day of 1983 still bidding for the national championship SMU had finished the 1982 Please see SMU Page 16 By MAL FLORENCE Times Staff Writer Don Rogers says he patterned his style of play after Kenny Easley but the UCLA free safety hits with the li same devastating force as the former I UCLA All American Steve Smith starting a quarterback will remember Rogers may grimace with pain at the 1 for some time Smith was turning upheld on an option play in the second quarter of Rose Bowl game when Rogers smashed him It was a jolting clean tackle and it knocked Smith out of the game with a separated right shoulder I a think he saw me and I caught him off guard I think he would be out of the Someone asked Rogers if he said anything to the Michigan quarterback say anyting to him and he say anything Rogers said Although Rogers was the key player on defensive unit he said that his teammate inside linebacker Blanchard Montgomery made the turning-point play of the game UCLA led 17-7 midway through the fourth quarter and Michigan was back-Please see SMITH Page 8 It was one of many big and big by Rogers He made 11 tackles intercepted a Smith pass when Michigan was threatening and broke up three other passes As a result Rogers junior was named co-player of the game along with UCLA quarterback Tom Ramsey offense has received considerably more recognition than its defense this season But it was the Bruin defense that was perhaps the decisive factor in 24-14 win over Michigan in the 69th Rose Bowl was reading the option said Rogers talking about his hit on Smith.
