WEDNESDAY EVENING THE HARRISBURG TELEGRAPH MAY 22. 1901 3 East Harrisburg: BURNED BY ACIDS Three Children Painfully Hurt on the CADWALLEDER-KOONS WEDDING. Improvement Association Held a Session---Birthday Party Held Last Night. Three accidents from children drinking carbolic acid occurred yesterday in two different parts In both instances the bottles were properly labeled and the accidents occurred simply from ignorance. Walter McFarland, the 2-yearold son of Mr.

and Mrs. George MeFarland, Seventeenth and Vernon streets, was visiting at a house at Fourteenth and Market streets, and while there crawled up on a chair and took a bottle of carbolic from a shelf and began to drink the stuff. The child was discovered before he had proceeded very far and the bottle snatched from him. He had swallowed very little of the poison but was seriously burned on his lips and on his tongue. The other accidents occurred in the vicinity of Twelfth and Market streets.

A number of children are in the habit of playing on the steps that lead from Market street up to Twelfth street. They would gather 'old bottles together and "keep store" on the landings of the steps. Yesterday children found a bottle that contained a few drops carbolic acid. This bottle, along with the others, was filled with water and was part of the stock in trade. During the afternoon two of the children drank of the diluted carbolic acid and became very sick.

A doctor was necessary in both cases and but little damage was done outside of burns about the children's mouths. MRS.
