1 -i-- Jon Maeo ThE i iMKS Thursday, Aug. 21, 197S Bob Foster 'BIG EDDIE' IN TROUBLE BEFORE IT GETS STARTED If you for some reason want to see a 1950 situation comedy but not a particularly good one, you might try "Big Eddie" starring Sheldon Leonard and Sheree North next Saturday night. Leonard has a fine record as a television producer and director. He earned a lot of money as an actor playing the same role over and over again, that of the Runyonisque gangster or con man. He is still playing that role, only now he is a reformed con man and gambler.

Unfortunately the half-hour series, done on tape at KTTV studios in Hollywood, seems to be overdone. Leonard overdoes his old character. Sheree North seems to overact her role and most of the supporting cast approach their parts in the same way. There are reports from Los Angeles that CBS and the other networks may cancel the bad shows long before January, as has been done in other years. A number of shows may not survive beyond the November rating book.

Several new series have been put into production just in case. It might very well be that "Big Eddie" will be one of the shows that lasts only through November. "Doc," which aired last week came off much better than was expected, so maybe we are guessing wrong on "Big Leonard is an extremely likeable guy and we'd be delighted to be wrong on his show too. BECAUSE OF A DROP IN the sales and rental of color television sets in Britain, the BBC will have to close down BBC-2, the second government owned television network put on the air some years ago as a minority service. Reports from London reveal that there won't be enough money to operate two networks by the first of the year.

If it is necessary to cut back to one commercial and one BBC network, it appears that BBC-1 may expand its hours, but only early in the day. The licenses for color television sets in England were recently raised and another increase is out of question lor at least two years, a BBC spokesman toJd the Sunday Times of London. The drop in sales and those converting back to black and white sets has cut income to operate the BBC by $25 million, and unless Income increases, BBC-2 will become just a memory. There are people within the Labor government who would like to wipe out both the BBC and ITV and set up four competitive government-owned commercial networks; this may bring such a move about. NEXT JANUARY the final 16 episodes of ''Upstairs, Downstairs" will be seen on PBS.

This week, in New York, a number of members of the cast of the show got together for a luncheon sponsored by the people who are producing "Beacon Hill," the U.S. version of the popular British series. The luncheon included Jean Marsh, who created the series and played Rose, and is about to open in a Broadway production of "Habeas Gordoa Jackson, who played the butler Hudson; David Langston, who did Mr. Bellamy; Simon Williams, who played son Richard, and lady Marjorle, played by Rachel Gurney. "We don't expect to see each other at the same time, ever again," Jean Marsh said sadly.

"Of course, we shall always be running across each other individually, for in London and New York, theatrical people are usually very close." CARDINAL PLAY-BY-PLAY baseball announcer Jack Buck has won the coveted anchor spot for NBC-TV's new "Grandstand" sports show which will be seen for five hours every Sunday afternoon starting in September. Buck has a huge following in the Midwest where he has been the voice of the Cardinals for some years. He also was one of the early announcers in the old American Football League and later did NFL games. He will continue as sports director of KMOX-TV, St. Louis.

CBS SHOWED ITS POWER AGAIN last week with seven shows out of the top 10 in the latest Nielsen Ratings released early yesterday. Here is how the shows lined up: 1 M.A.S.H. (CBS); 2 Hawaii Five-0 (CBS); 3 Sanford and Son (NBC); 4 Sunday Night Mystery Movie "Columbo" (NBC); 5 -Chico and The Man (NBC); 6 Cannon (CBS); 7 S.W.A.T. "I "like his personality," says Miss Smith, who just i i taping a Tony Orlando and Dawn Show for CBS-TV. "He impresses me as being a sincere, warm, a person with such wholesomeness. "I met him two years ago in Philadelphia when we co- hosted The Mike Douglas Show but I feel like I've known that boy all his life," A tribute like that from Kate Smith is tribute indeed, for the great lady who can accurately be called a legend in her lifetime has known many of the most important people of the world. Born Kathryn Elizabeth Smith in Greenville, she was popular on Broadway in such musicals as "Hit the Deck" and "Flying High." However, it was radio which made her internationally famous and a household favorite across the United States where her rendition of "God Bless America" all but put her in the class with the Statue of Liberty. "I get many presents from fans with 'God Bless America' worked in," Miss Smith says, "through crochet or embroidery or some sort of handiwork.

"I know many people consider 'God Bless America' a sort of second national anthem, but I don't know how many of the records have been sold because I've never gotten any royalties. They go to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts and always have. "Mr. Collins (Ted Collins, her manager for many years) and Mr. Berlin (Irving, who wrote the song) and I had a very careful discussion about where the royalties should go and we decided the Scouts should have them." In addition to being a guest on television shows from time to time, Miss Smith maintains a heavy Faiine Fox Tries New Look BLOOMINGDALE, N.J.

(UPI) Her agent says she's trying to change her image, but stripper Fanne Foxe is still riding the crest of publicity from her relationship with Rep. Wilbur Mills, D-Ark. Miss Foxe spent Wednesday publicizing her new book, called "Fanne Foxe -the Truth about the Tidal Basin Incident and Her Life with Wilbur Mills." "It's about the life of a woman," she said. "It doesn't involve sex scandals." Mills stepped down as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee shortly after his friendship with Miss Foxe became concert schedule which she interrupts only once a year for a two-month rest at her summer home in Lake Placid, N.Y. Fond of new music, Miss Smith calls Paui Williams one of her favorite composers and she's also partial to Michel Legrand.

Among new singers she likes Orlando, of course, and John Denver. "I've never met him," she says of the latter, "but I have the impression that he loves his music." Overweight since childhood, Miss Smith has been on a diet for the last 3 2 years through which she's lost more than 80 pounds. "I never let my weight interfere with anything I wanted to do," she says, "so it didn't bother me. But my doctor said that after I reached 60 it might be damaging to my heart, so he put me on a diet that was right for me. "He wanted me to lose weight slowly, because, as he pointed out, that was how I put it on.

"So it's taken me SVi years to lose 85 pounds. "I'm still on my diet, though I occasionally fall off. I have my cake or my pie and then I'm as mean as a bear until I get back into dieting. "I take vitamins to maKe up for foods I don't care for and I don't smoke or drink. I don't object to other people smoking and drinking but I've just never personally cared for either.

"I see my doctor regularly for checkups, which I think are very important, and I get plenty of rest. In fact, I don't go out at night, because I'd rather stay at home and watch television. "That's my health program. "I i though, that energy also depends upon your mental attitude. If you have the right outlook on life, you'll feel much better.
