2 Part VIMonday, January 21, 1985 Cos Angeles (Times OPENINGS 1 1 ft- I According to Kendall, the repertory choices say as much about the group as they do about contemporary music. "What we play is an important way in which our interests come out. We don't go heavy on the music of the '50s and '60s, which departed from traditional forms and materials music that was self-consciously We don't eschew that repertory, but it doesn't dominate our programming." By example, Kendall points to the UCLA event one in which he will not participate. "The program is not taking an ideological stance. We are working with the particular people who are coming out." The opening piece, "Apprehensions" by Israeli-born Shulamit Ran (now a faculty member at the University of Chicago), is "a real tour de force," Kendall notes.

Scored for soprano, clarinet and piano, the piece uses poetry by Sylvia Plath written in the last year of her tragic life. "I guess we're taking a chance by opening with that," Kendall acknowledges. "It's dangerous and a challengeto ask people to open their ears and their feelings. "But then we'll follow it with one of the most fun, accessible pieces imaginable Stravinsky's 'L'His-toire du in its trio version." The second half is devoted to "Ever-livin' Rhythm" for percussion and tape by Californian Neil Rolnick, the Webern pieces and Seattle-based composer-pianist Doppmann's "Spring Songs" "one of the most special, magical pieces we've encountered, using texts by, among others, Chaucer and John Lennon. "We try to avoid the strictly cerebral, intellectual program," Kendall points out.

"There is a need to keep music a living art. We have a sense of urgency about that." GROUP TAKES AIM AT 20TH CENTURY ByMARCSHULGOLD Don't get the wrong impression about the 20th Century Consort. As artistic director Christopher Kendall says of the East Coast-based ensemble, "The performers in the group tend not to be specialists in 20th-century music." While this approach may seem odd, Kendall finds it not only logical but central to the success of the consort, which makes its local debut Saturday at Schoenberg Hall, UCLA. "This aspect of the group is a reflection of my inclinations and the way the group was formed and developed," Kendall explained during a recent conversation from his St. Louis home.

"We are all active in the performance of other repertory. We all maintain a connection with the past." The 35-year-old conductor says that this "combined palette of musical activities" by the various members of the group means that the performances "place a premium on fundamental musicality that develops from playing the music that is part of the tradition." On Saturday, works ranging from Webern's Four Pieces for violin and piano (1910) to William Doppmann's "Spring Songs" (1981) will be presented by five members of the consort soprano Carmen Pelton, violinist Barbara Sonies, clarinetist Arne Running, pianist Lambert Orkis and percussionist Thomas Jones. From its inception in 1975, the DiCHIERA IS NAMED DIRECTOR By HERMAN WONG, Times Staff Writer David DiChiera, general director of the Michigan Opera Theatre in Detroit, has been named general director of Opera Pacific, a Costa Mesa-based organization that seeks to produce opera and musical theater at the new Orange County Performing Arts Center, The Times learned Sunday. Although DiChiera, 49, is expected to remain with the Detroit company, which he founded in 1970, he also will run the Orange County organization, effective immediately. DiChiera said he will spend up to 25 weeks this year with Opera Pacific.

"We not only want to play the (Orange County) center by 1987, but also to possibly do collaborative productions in Los Angeles and other areas," DiChiera said Sunday in Costa Mesa, adding that he has talked with officials at the Los Angeles Music Opera Assn. and San Diego Opera about exploring such joint ventures. However, he said that Opera Pacific has not yet entered into contract talks with the Orange County Performing Arts Center for the center's opening 1986-87 season. The center, now negotiating for a 1987 run by New York City Opera, is. currently concentrating on booking nationally known touring companies.

-r, DiChiera said that Opera Pacific will need a budget of at least $3 million by 1987 for a "full-fledged program of producing and community outreach, as well as audience development." consort has been a loose-knit aggregation of instrumentalists and singers. "The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center is a good analogy," Kendall agrees. "We started with a combination of National Symphony players and others from New York and the Washington area. Some had worked together in other contexts, and some we knew from reputation. Still, there was a lot of personnel experimentation." With the flexibility of performers comes a flexibility in repertory quite definitely part of the original plan, says Kendall: "The range of instruments chosen by modern composers is wide and varied." and the appearance of the ghoulies themselves.

They spend the first half of the movie growling and slavering, then proceed to kill off most of the party guests one by one. Meanwhile, Jonathan's murderous warlock of a father escapes from the grave, scheming new deviltry, and Jonathan and his girlfriend quarrel incessantly about their relationship. Writing? The quality of Luca Bercovici and Jefery Levy's dialogue can best be appreciated in the moment a would-be party seducer, reeking with unctuous macho, sidles up to two women in a kitchen, leers suggestively and remarks, "My name is Dick. But you can call me Dick." End of scene. (The actor who recites this improbable come -on is named Keith Joe Dick, so perhaps he improvised it himself.

None of the other dialogue, however, is any improvement.) Acting? The entire cast snarls, pouts, screams or mutters its lines with glassy-eyed vacancy. Many of the actors give off a kind of frenzied, cram -it -all -in desperation, as if they were trapped at a three-minute-long audition. For once, the ads brilliantly capture a movie's essence. The toilet is exactly where "Ghoulies" belongs. Not that the movie lacks any evidence of talent.

Not that it is the complete, meretricious rip-off of Joe Dante's "Gremlins" that the title implies. Cinematographer Mac Ahlberg contributes eerily lit camerawork that occasionally achieves surprising atmosphere and delicacy, and John Carl Buech-ler's creations, the ghoulies themselvesfoul, reptilian little beings coated with some obscene glittering, mucous-like moisture have a certain nauseating charm. From there, however, it's a steep slide downhill. Plot? "Ghoulies" begins with a satanic ritual in which a woman's heart is ripped out, and proceeds to the dropout adventures of her collegiate son, Jonathan, seized by weird desires and impulses at the old family mansion. There are mildly orgiastic party scenes, pentagrams on the floor "ONE OF THE YEAR'S 10 BEST." Direction? One can only say of director Luca Bercovici that he in no way compromises or obscures the intentions of Luca Bercovici the co-screenwriter. They deserve each other. Originality? Besides the ghoulies, borrowed from Spielberg's "Gremlins" (and perhaps also his upcoming there is an evil -clown puppet courtesy of "Poltergeist," a wizard duel courtesy of Corman's "The Raven," the serial murders of the hard-partying guests, which recalls both "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th," and a father-son conflict that smacks of the "Star Wars" trilogy. The relationship quarrels, meanwhile, suggest "As the World Turns" on an off day. But "Ghoulies" has two things to recommend it, besides the efforts of Ahlberg and Buechler and the performances of Peter Risch and Tamara De Treaux as the ghoulish emissaries, Grizzle and Greedigut.

It ends right on time. And despite our worst fears, none of it actually takes place inside the toilet.
