Morning Briefing A Brief Appearance in New York Turns Hintnaus Into Sex Symbol Pole vaulter Tom Hintnaus didn't muke it to the Moscow Olympics tnTuuse of the boycott, but he's getting more exposure thun uh.vIkxIv who did. Hinlnaus, former Aviation High and University of Oregon vaulter who won the 1980 U.S.

Olympic trials, is now a model for Calvin Klein, showing off men's shorts and underwear. One picture can be seen on a 40- by 50-foot billboard in New York's Times Square, showing Hintnaus lying in the sun and wearing nothing but a bikini brief. Klein, who caused a sensation with his Brooke Shields ads, told United Press International: "Some people find the ad very erotic. Some are saying, 'There goes Klein, at it again, creating To me, it's all in the eyes of the beholder." The ad also is shown in glass cases at New York bus stop shelters. "Women love the ad," Klein said.

"They tell me that people are breaking the glass and stealing the posters. They report 35 cases already." How did Klein choose Hinlnaus as his model? It seems he had scouted the Southland for the perfect model, without success, when he was driving down Sunset Blvd. with a producer friend and spotted Hintnaus jogging. Klein: "I yelled, 'That's him! Stop the Dept. of Incidental Information: Milwaukee Manager Harvey Kuenn still holds the Wisconsin high school record for drop-kicking with a 52-yard field goal for Milwaukee Lutheran in 1948.

Add Forgettable Quotes: Wrote Don Riley of the St. Paul Pioneer Press Sept. 6: "Gene Mauch's just waiting to be taken, and the Angels are as ripe to be picked as September raspberries. The oldies are beginning to wilt." When John Mazur transferred from USC to Texas he said the USC coaches already had made up their minds to go with Sean Salisbury this year, no matter what happened in spring practice. Subscribing to Mazur's view is reserve USC quarterback Jim Arrivey, who told the Daily Trojan: "If I were making the decision based on what I saw at practice day after day, I thought John played very well.

But I felt the coaching staff knew what they wanted from the start. I can hardly blame John for leaving. I'd have done the same thing." Arrivey "Sean is going to be great, though." Dave Winfield told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he owns 75 pairs of size 13-14 shoes, which he buys at a special shop in Atlanta, giving away the old ones every year or so. "I remember when I was young." Winfield said.

"I was lucky to have some borrowed Army boots. Well, I guess I really didn't have it that bad. "But I do shop for bargains. People will try to cheat you if you let them. They'll say, 'Hey, you can afford these shoes' and tell you they cost $250." Quotebook U.S.
