That's the USC tailback's average per carry this season, and it's the image he projects as a runner.

Crutcher is only 25 yards away from a season, and as USC Coach Ted Tollner says, he has earned every yard the hard way. Crutcher, a 5-10, 190-pound junior, doesn't have the speed of O.J. Simpson or the gliding cutback ability of Marcus Allen. He's a pounding type who endures punishment and is always heading upfield, but seldom breaks long runs. Because he isn't spectacular, some USC supporters take him for granted, waiting for freshman Ryan Knight, a much -publicized prep star from Riverside, to carry on the tradition of more exciting runners such as Allen, Simpson, Mike Garrett and Jon Arnett.

Crutcher is more a Charlie White-type, strong, durable, committed to the work ethic. "He doesn't make that eye-catching run, but he doesn't give you any bad runs, either," Tollner said. "You just have to get your big plays some other way. Fred is a good, tough inside runner. He runs the four, five, six-yard play as well as you can run it.

"Fred doesn't get the cheap yards. He doesn't dance and he gets every yard that is in a run. He has earned his 975 yards." A typical afternoon for Crutcher would be his 116-yard, 35-carry performance in the 16-7 win over Washington last Saturday that clinched the Pacific 10 championship and Rose Bowl bid for the Trojans. He didn't have a run longer than eight yards, but he and USC's powerful blocking line caused the Huskies to crack in the fourth quarter. Crutcher surged for two yards and his 10th touchdown of the season to culminate a 68 -yard drive that gave USC a 13-7 lead that Washington couldn't overcome.

"Washington has a great defense, but it wasn't as quick in the fourth quarter as it was in the first half," Crutcher said. "I knew our linemen could stay on them longer. I knew we were going to score. I seem to sense when the other team is giving up. I just gear up and go a little harder when we get inside a team's 30-yard line." Crutcher is like a fighter who goes 15 rounds in every bout.

He doesn't score any quick knockouts but just keeps punching. And he pays the price. "I feel OK right after a game," he said, "and I didn't feel bad Saturday night. But I couldn't sleep at all Sunday night. My back was hurting and so was my shoulder." Crutcher says he still feels banged up on Mondays but his tired muscles begin to respond on Tuesdays and he's back to normal on Wednesdays, ready for the next assault.

Now, as USC prepares to play UCLA Saturday at the Rose Bowl, Crutcher seems quicker and stronger than at any time this season. "I think every back gets better as the season goes along," he said. "Their reactions are quicker and I55RI3 26.98 1 6SR 1 3 27.98 I75RI3 28.98 I85RI3 30.98 I6SRI4 32.98 I7570SRI3 31.98 I7SRI4 34.98 I8570SRI3 33.98 I8SRI4 36.98 I8b70SRI4 35.98 I55RI5 30.98 I9570SRI4 37.98 I65RI5 32.98 40.98 PI6V80RI3 28.98 P70S7SRI4 38.98 PI7B7SRIJ 29.98 I 'j7')R 1 4 42.98 PI7S80RI3 31.98 PS7SR 1 4 48.98 PI8'j80Rli 32.98 PA)'i'iR I 'i 40.98 PI7b75RI4 33.98 Pn'7R' 42.98 PI8575RI4 34.98 IWlblWt'j 44.98 PI957')RI4 36.98 I 'j 46.98 LIGHT TRUCK STEEL BELTED RADIAL Jzf $4498 Bply(tt) RWL they know exactly what their linemen are doing. At the start of a game I'm a little tense and my legs aren't really loose. I'm more flexible at the end of game and I think I run better.

I'm naturally kind of a tight person." Crutcher had an uphill struggle to become USC's starting tailback, In 1981 as a freshman he was just a raw apprentice behind Allen. He was the starter in 1982 but damaged his knee in the third game and, after surgery, was redshirted. He came back in 1983 and battled Michael Harper and Todd Spencer for the starting job. He started six games and gained 528 yards, but injuries, his competition and the fact that USC was struggling through a losing season prevented him from asserting Compete, compete. That's all Crutcher has been doing since he came out of Pasadena's Blair High, where he led the CIF Southern Section in rushing and scoring.

He recalls that college recruiters came to his house and promised him that he would be an instant starter at their schools. USC had a different approach. "All that Coach (John) Robinson said to me was that I'll get a chance to play," Crutcher said. "That sounded good to me. Getting a chance sounded better than somebody saying you'll play right way.

I didn't believe the others. I knew that he (Robinson) would give me a chance." Crutcher is ninth on USC's all-time rushing list with 2,014 yards. The eight players ahead of him include four Heisman Trophy winners White, Allen, Simpson and Mike Garrett and there are 10 All-Americans behind him. Trojan Notes Ted Tollner said that Paul Green, 6-3, 220, a freshman tight end from Fresno, will be a backup fullback for the UCLA game. Kennedy Pola has been bothered by recurring knee injuries and Todd Steele is doubtful with a sprained ankle.

Excluding 1980, when USC and UCLA were on Pac-10 probation, this is the first year since 1971 that a possible Rose Bowl bid isn't on the line for one, or both teams in a Bruin-Trojan game. USC has already clinched conference championship. USC will be making an unprecedented 24th appearance in the Rose Bowl. The Trojans' overall bowl record is 20-7, including 17-6 in the Rose Bowl. They lead the nation in highest winning percentage in bowl games USC has scored first in eight of its nine games this season and has outscored opponents, 108-44, in the first half.

31. 1984 General Manager Mike Port of the Angels said Wednesday that he won't offer Fred Lynn more than the $1.45 million he earned last season, and Lynn's base salary will be less. Port said he is prepared to offer Lynn, the club's highest-salaried player in 1984, a base salary that would place him among the upper half or upper third of Angel players. The offer, Port said, will include a sizable incentive package that could lift Lynn, who is in the final year of a four-year contract, to $1.45 million. Port implied that he is willing to sign Lynn for two or three years and said he hopes to present his proposal to Lynn's attorney, Jerry Kapstein, before Friday.

Port indictated that significant differences exist in negotiations with infielder Rob Wilfong and that relief pitcher Don Aase has yet to make a counterproposal to an Angel offer that he had called unacceptable. Wilfong was selected by seven teams in the re-entry V20A Keep your car running clean and efficient Coupon Expires Dec. 3 1 1 984 OFF Coupon Expires LIMIT ONE COUPON PER PURCHASE Coupon Expires Dec. 31, 1984 DYN0 TUNE UP 1 12 MONTH OR 12,000 MILE WARRANTY BRAKE SERVICE 2 WHEEL DISC OUR BEST 2 WHEEL BRAKE RELINE DRUM PACKAGE saye I s6-sl0 OFF REG. save I 10 OFF REG.
