Although not strictly geographically or historically correct. It is based on facts. The Doan brothers were real persons, and the record of their fiendish plots given are substantially, true. The story shows what trials and danger the patriots of the RevoUtioa were exposed to, not only from the British but from their tory allies, who committed all sorts of dep- redatioas under their protection and who were a thousand times more mer-- cilesa than they, NOTE JiEWSPAPEH ENTKEt- The Philadelphia North American Issued last week a Spanish supplement, Df the same size as the regular issue of 1 that paper, giving a description of that city, and containing advertisements of leading bouses in nearly every branch of lousiness. Th supplements will be sent to South America where they will be distributed in the most efflcaeiou8 paanner, with a1 view of increasing the trade of the part of Philadelphia with the South American states.

This is enterprise of the genuine sort, and furnishes another evidence of the Zeal with which the North American labors to promote the best interests of Philadelphia and of the old commonwealth. WE ttWSIIiVEB COINAGE. A oLjThb, St a inquires whether the new silver dollar now being coined by the Government under the' recent act of (Jongress, will be a legal dolUl. to all intents and purposes in the hiarket of the world, or in other words, us wi understand liim, whether it will be equivalent to the gold dollar as a J' purchasing medium. The querfy ar'ses from the general misunstanding concerning the precious metals as a circulating medium.

It is not the stamp it bears upon its face that regulates the value of a coin in the world's commerce; it is tlie amount of the preciousuieTaTt contain. If a simple declaration ok government that 'this shall be a dolla" would make it such, and put it on par with the gold dollar as a corarnercial agent, it would matter little whether the coin were silver or copper, or any metal of less i Tralue.than the former. But such a i declaration would not make it so. It must possess an intrinsic worth; it will command other commodities to the 1 mountofpuretoetal initindno more. ix 'As a purchasing factor, it will be worth in the world's market just what the came number of grains of silver would te worth.

History has shown thi3 to be 'a fact; Edward II.duringf whose reigni 'ftne com, ror economic purposes, naa 1 Jte'en debased from the regular standard, issued proclamation, commanding, tander js'eyere penalty the money of the realm should be kept current at the i2 fcanje YaJue it was W6nt to, bear, and that co man should inhance the, price bis goods, so as to make the money I of less value actually than that s'tainped upon jta lace. even iue proiama tioa of royalty And the most energetic pn the part of the officials of the 'V crown to enforce it could not make it qual to tbfi urer coins of earlier years is a purchasing mfdinm simply because 'lit not possess the intrinsic value 1 stamped upon its ace. Later, Edward i VL, made a soraewliat similar attempt, after. another form, and with equally unsatisfactory results. If aoceUvaiue could not be set au coin in that early day when, power of kings wa virtually nbsolutfl, and the masses were little, pore, than slaves, it cmnot be lone when all power is restricted within' proper limits, and the people are 'the real masters.

a call a currency adapted to the wants of the country, hut if it is not too late we should "like to suggest to Mr. Jones that this new issue should not be trusted the mercy of a cold-blooded money shark like John Sherman. He must not b3 allowed to print it and put it aay in the vaults; but provision must be made for its distribution pro that all the people for whom this paper is printed -money is made, Mr. Jones would say-'Shall be sure to get it. Then there ia another contingency to be guarded against.

We know too well the tendency of the Shylocks of the east. They want to make money scare andvauable, and they will get hold of this paper and lock it up in thein vaults just as they always have done. In less thau a year we saau linu tuat sofflti one of these Wall-street scamps will have got $50 and some poor man will have nothing left. Mo, Mr. Jones let us have provision that the array 'Shall be ordered out on Christmas to see that each man who lias been deprived of his twenty-five dollars lias it returned to him on New Year's day.

For do we not read in the. Scriptures that to him that liutli not shall be given all that belongs to him that hath?" Ol tt r.SHIJiTOi LliTTEIt. Washington, D. March 9, 1878, The week before Lent saw a wilder whirl of gayety than ever at the Capital. I wonder that society people do not give their entertainments earlier, so as to avoid being in such a rush and hurry and crowding one thing into another the last of theseason.

But they never do learn, and it is invariably the case that the week or ten days previous to the advent of the Lental season, every day and evening are nothing less than a perfect whirlagig of festivities. Last things have a flavor all their own, too. Everybody goes to last receptions and hops and soirees, because they are the last, here i5 no enjoyment in them, anl people are glad when they are over. 'I he President's last levee, given Tuesday evening of last week, was simply a heated, perspiring, uncomfortable crowd. On ihursJay evening tollowinff, becrctary Evarts' mansion was thrown open for the ist reception of the season, and the hrpng there was so great that one could scarcely raise an arm or move except with the crowd; But Mrs.

Hayes last reception, on Saturday aiternoon, was worse than all the rest in that respect, NIany thousand persons were in attend ance, and fully two hours were consum ed in getting through the White House. The heat in the corridor was intense, sev eral ladies fainted, and one was taken with convulsions. One of the things that nervous and ailing and iainty people never iwiu1 learn is to keep out of crowd. Mr. Hayes wisely received bare-hand His greetings were as cordial as his wife's who has such a wonderful store of kindly smiles.

Some one has said of her. "She is always prodigal of her smiles," and another rattier ill-naturedly speaks ot "Mrs. Hayes chrome smile bhe wore a maroon silk and velvet she had appeared in half a dozen times or more this reason, and held a bunch of daffodils in her hand. Four or five ladies assisted her in receiving, among them Mrs. Evarts and Mrs Sherman.

Three Misses Evarts were conspicuously present, one in black velvet, one in two shades of steel blue silk, aud one in sky blue, the oldest ot these three sisters is a pronounced brunette, and the Other two very light blondes pale blue eyes and light yellow hair. Mrs. Schurz; stil in mourning for her mother, wore black crape trimmed dress, pack and hat Ihe saver bill having become a law Secretary Sherman has already taken steps to carry out its provisions The day after its passage, indeed, he sent tel egraphic orders to Philadelphia lor the manufacture ot dies sufficient not only for the mint there, but for that at Carson City also. Both mints will begin work on the new coin at once and betore three weeks pass it will be issued, for general circulation. Although both the fresi dent and Vice President have openly and decidedly proclaimed their disapprova of tne silver bill, yet the country at large appears to hail its passage and its beoomjQg a law with joy and gladness, A settlement of any kind, in fact, would have been' gratefully received the peo ple are glad to hnd bottom at last, the new dollar will have on its Obverse side the head of the Goddess of Liberty, (pooi Goddess!) wearing the traditional liberty cap and wreath ot wheat and cotton lea 'L Pluribus Unum" is Roman letters lorm a semi-circle above the head, com pleted by thirteen stars, and the year of manufacture, un the reverse side is our eagle, one talon holding an olive branch and the other some arrows, encircled by a laurel wreath and with Mln God we irut," "United States of Ameri ea," and "Oae Dollar."
