Seals Have Problems Coach Bum-Rapping Me: Smith Gary Smith OSHAWA, Ont. (UPI) The Oakland Seals have added two more players to their list of walking wounded, but the National Hockey League club is just 35 concerned about a healthy but disappointing goal tender no longer with the team. The Seals' star forward Norm Ferguson sustained a knee injury and goalie Chris Worthy took a hard shot in the midsection during Oakland's loss Thursday night to Pittsburgh, 3-2. Both players will be out for an undetermined length of time, though neither injury is thought to be serious. Ferguson and Worthy join Earl Ingarfield, Mike Laughton, Carol Vadnais, and Tony Featherstone on the injured list.

Coach Fred Glover appeared more concerned Friday with the play of Gary Smith. The 6-foot-4 goalie" performed just as erratically during exhibitions as during last year's regular season and was demoted recently to the Seals 1 Providence development team. Glover said Friday he will ihaye a scout in the stands tonight and Sunday to evaluate Smith's performance with Providence. "Smitty is lost io the woods somewhere," said. "We thought progress had been made with him last season, bat it an went down the drain." The 25-year-old Smith contends Glover has applied continual verbal pressure which has resulted in the goalie's disappointing play.

"I'm just trying to do a job as best I can," Smith said. "They think everyne they light a fire under me Til play butter. All Glover does is bum-rap me. Td rather he let me alone. Td just as soon let one of the other gays play so 1 wouldn't have to take the aggravation.

Fm not that crazy about the game. If there was something else I could do, I'd rather do it" The Seals are a young club, trying to shore up several spots. Glowr had been counting on Smith to be his regular goalie. Worthy is entering only his second year of NHL action. He played in just 14 games last sea 1 son.

Still, the youngster has posted a slightly better record in pre-season games than the Seals' two 36-year-old veteran goalies, Charlie Hodge and Marcel Faille. The Seals have won three of their first seven pre-season contests. Sonny Jurgensen Redskins Here 'Polished' 49ers Open At Home By JACK BLUTH Times Sports Editor A team hopefully more polished will open the home season for the 49ers Sunday. The Prospectors, who have lost eight straight games, including two league contests, host the Washington Redskins in Kezar Stadium.

Game time is 1 p.m., and a crowd of 35,000 is expected to 5 watch the 49ers attempt to snap a losing streak that is getting dangerously close to the club record. Coach Dick Nolan worked the club overtime daily this week to "polish up" what he thought was the 49crs' best game of the season, albeit a defeat, last week against Green Bay. The 49ers come off a 14-7 loss to the Packers, who were once coached by the same man Vince Lombard! who coaches the Redskins. Oddsmakers apparently aren't impressed by Lombardi's record. They have made the 49ers a four-point favorite.

By the same token, the Redskins are not the same team -y were before Lombard) took over. It took a last-minute rally for the Cleveland Browns to beat them last week, 27-23. The week previous, the Redskins whipped New Orleans, 2620. Rookie running back Larry Brown ripped that always- tough Cleveland defense for 95 yards. Quarterback Sonny Jurgensen completed 14 out of 18 passes.

In two games Jurgensen has completed 24 for 44 and 350 yards, five of those for touchdowns. He has had none intercepted. Defensive statistics are not so impressive. The Redskins have given tip 416 yards rushing as compared to 251 passing in two games. Ken Willard may carry the ball often Sunday.

The 49ers will be in better health this week than last. Defensive end Stan Hindma.1 returns to the lineup. So does running back Bill Tucker. Defensive back Mel Phillips has a bad ankle, however. Three old favorites will be in the Washington lineup.

They are former 49er offensive tackle Walter Rock, who was traded to the Redskins for Washington's number one draft choice; former 49er running back Dave Kopay. a reserve, and former UCLA Heisman Trophy winner; quarterback- Gary Beban of Redwood City who is being used as a backup wide receiver this year. Sunday's game will mark the first meeting at Kezar between the two clubs since 1961 when the 49ers scored a 35-3 victorv. The Redskins won. 31-28, in Washington in 1967.

The Dolphins, who -lost to the Raiders in Oakland 20-17 on George Blanda's last-second field goal, will be without the services of Stan Mitchell, who performed well against the Raiders, but Csonka should make up for his loss Jim Kiick, who ran well against toe Raiders last time out, will also'be back.
