Kenny Rogers.

Liberty LO-543. it's hard to imagine anyone singing Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight," one of the great ballads of the '70s, better than Seger himself. But an unlikely duo, Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton, surpass Seger with a stirring version that's already in the Top 10. The blend of sharply contrasting voices- -his deep and hers very high -is very appealing. Rogers, never known for his vocal power, stretches to match Easton, with remarkable results.

To me, it's his finest vocal performance. Too bad this dynamic duo didn't collaborate on more songs. Nothing else on this so-so album of middle- the-road ballads is in the same league with the title song, though "All My Life" is a fairly absorbing Superior Ticket Service ALL EVENTS BENATAR STYX HALL OATES WOODLAND HILLS 345-5650 884-1311 18622 Ventura Blvd. 20037 Ventura Blvd. NITECLUB L.A.S MOST SOPHISTICATED FEB.

Rogers produced or coproduced most of the album, working primarily with Lionel Richie, David Foster and James Carmichael. That was Rogers' big error. Albums assembled by a flock of producers are seldom first -rate. The best Got Tonight" and. "All My were produced by Rogers and FosKenny Rogers ter, one of the two or three best pop producers in the business.

One song that just misses- -the old Joe Cocker hit "You Are So Beautiful," produced solely by Rogers -cries out for some of Foster's slick touches. If Rogers had hired Foster to produce the entire album, it would have almost certainly been excellent rather than just fair. -DENNIS HUNT HONEST EMOTION, TOUGH POSES "STRONG STUFF." Hank Williams Jr. -Curb 60223. Beneath Williams' gratuitous reminders of how much of an outlaw he is and who his father was, there is some solid country music here.

His duet with Waylon Jennings on "Leave Them Boys Alone" succeeds, thanks to musical allusions to country pioneers Hank Sr. and Jimmie Rodgers. "Gonna Go Huntin' Tonight" also has a spirited musical foundation, but the story -equating the search for the right woman with deer hunting -is downright embarrassing. When Williams drops his "macho man" attitude, he finally touches on the honest emotions that distinguished his father's work. And honest emotion, not tough -guy posturing, is what the best country music has always been about.
