BLAINE OF MAINE FOR VICE PRESIDENT GEN JOHN A LOGAN OF ILLINOIS EDITOEIAL NOTES Judge Edmunds may well exclaim Save me from my friends How do our democratic friends like their candidate for State Senator Our democratic readers will find quite a comprehensive report of their late State Convention held at St Louis id this issue ot the Graphic Even with the dull season and the hot weather the Graphic is in the midst of a lefreshing rush of business especially in the line of fine job-printing should havev had the nomination for State Senator at the hands of the democracy but he didnt happen to be a Macon man and couldnt get there Crop reports from oil parts of Northern Missouri are very encouraging The com oats timothy and wheat are all largely over the average of the past three years Everything presages a prosperous year before us There is a large amount of interesting political temperance farm and general reading matter on our inside pages this week over twenty five long columns which it will pay you to read If these reasonable expectations should be fulfilled there is no sort of doubt but our pet institution the Normal and the Business College will enjoy a very large patronage the coming fall and winter Gen Mannaduke who is on the war path for the governorship dropped in on his KirksvDle friends Monday evening but remained only a few hours It is understood that Adair will give her little ballot to Bashaw Subsidy Pomeroy the man who disappeared from Kansas politics in such bad odor a few years ago has bobbed up serenely as the candidate cf the prohibition anti secret society and the recognition of God in the con stitution party that met recently in Chicago A pen picture of the man will be found in Mark Twains Gilded Age Except for that he would have been completely forgotten by the American people Most reasonable temperance men are well enough convinced that the republican party as a political organization is near enough temperance in its sentiments and policy to suit all practical purposes It is in republican states like Iowa Kansas etc that citizens are afforded a chance to vote on the subject while democratic commonwealths like Missouri refuse to submit the question yet there are extremists who succeed always in playing into the hands of the whisky men by trying to run a one idea cam paien Democrats are clad to have such men in the field It helps them to carry close districts They are the most efficient allies the democracy can secure and they kill the temperance movement oftener than they help it If the temperance people of Missouri truly and heartily wish to follow the ex- ample set by Iowa and Kansas their first duty would be to oust the democrats from power But they wont do it A CONVENTION Of Real Estate Aseois At the solicitation of urgent a number of prominent Real Estate Agents and Brokers of the State of Missouri I am requested to call a Convention ot all RealJEstate Agents and Brokers in Missouri to meet in Kansas City Mo Sept 4th 1884 for the purpose of organizing a Ileal Estate Association and disscussing such measures as will tend to influence immigration and secure the speedy sale and exchange of real estate All intending to participate are requested to forward me their names Griggs Ed National Real Estate Index Kirksville Mo The Democrats have discovered thit Wendell Phillips repudiates the republican national nominee and some ol their organs prominently insert what they declare to be his denunciation of our ticket When it is remembered that Wendell Phillips died and was buried bout a year since the value of Democratic assertions will be appreciated- But then modern Democracy is a very dead thing itself and perhaps is qualified to speak for dead man We cannot however bring ourselves to believe Democracy and Wedell Phillips will ever meet in the unknown hereafter Democracy wil hardlygo where Wendell Phillips wil be and Phillips will not care lobe where Democracy goes Boonville Republican- SENATORIAL The DemocfaticSenatorial Convention which met at Moberly on Tues day resulted in the nomination ol Van Clove of Macon on first bal lot The candidates- before the con vention were Knott of Schuyler De- France of Adair and VanCIeve of Macon There are open charges of treachery on the part of certain delegates sent and instructed for DeFrance While the democracy are accustomed to such things it remains to be seen whether they will swallow the dose and vote the ticket Whoever beats Macon county in a convention must getup early She is generally solid for a Macon man without regard to fitness quality or politics This end of the district ought to kick vigorously and we believe if the republicans make a judicious nomination the doughty Macon General may not have such an easy walk over as some imagine We favor a straight nomination and vigorous canvas of the district Radical Ridge Record Graphic Reported Church and Sunday school are both very largely attended McCall gave us a neat little talk- Will Cord ray is to talk for us at the usual hour next Sunday Everybody is invited to attend meeting the 12th anil 13th inst at 1130 2 3o and 7 3o each day There time last year Miss Emma Wood was elected Secretary of our Sunday school last Sunday as successor to Dr Hibbard resigned Mr Vaughn wife and Mrs Wood were visiting in Sullivan county last week Kind Words Sever Die Written for the Uraphle Husband and wife an aged couple were standing at a street crossing waiting for a car The street car came along and stopped The ladys attention was attracted by a beautiful display of laces in a window close by She did not notice the arrival of the car Her husband took hold of her hand and said Come darling are you ready Yes always ready at that call There is magic in the word darling It is one of great significance and should be spoken with due reverence for the person meant The lips can form but few if any sweeter words and a wife is entitled to that word or name with all the meaning it can convey It is music to her ear it gladdens her heart imparts new life builds up and beautifies the home makes the world loqk brighter links their souls together and leads them on to a higher sphere of enjoyment The wife is not only gratified by such words of love but the husband who speaks them is blessed Now while the rose sends out its fragrance to sweeten the air its leaves are slowly unfolding new beauties and developing a more elegant form Thus sweet words from true hearts rightly spoken develope higher principles and unfold a better existence We hope that a wife may never listen in vain for such effective words but continually enjoy the sweet fragrance from the flower garden of the soul of him whom she loves Kind words are like the dawn of a beautiful morning srect words keep the day bright words of love lift every burden of life and brighten- our pathway when our shadows fall in front At The Crossing i mmKmimmVmSaSManv ADAIRtaTV back riding at break neck speed in nearly every direction over the country his head erect his eyes glaring like a wild man and his hair streaming in the morning breeze About noon having about exhausted himself and his charger he toned down so that some of the neighbors could get near him and inquire what was the matter His answer was Oh we have got a new boy at our house He weighs 27 lbs not miss its weight more than 20 lbs Now since Tilden has refused to be president and went square back on the democratic party Billy says the boy shall not be called Tilden but he shall do without a Down Demonstrated to ha TJndoniaTjly and Undoubtedly a Grand Success Forcible Facts of Intense Interest to our Farmer Friends Last week there was published a statement which was calculated to be very very damaging to the Low Down Binder but from the certificates appended below it will be observed that the Low Down is not only still in the ring but is just as handsome and effec tive as the most critical machinist could wish It is really too bad for the Osborne folks that they did hot know the thing was loaded when they deliberately put their foot on the ham mer and blew in the muzzle but it cant be helped now Here is what the farmers present a the exhibition say To the Farmers of Adair County I believe it my duty ai a farmer and a friend to farmers interests to say that the statements published last week by Carothers Greene in regard to he Osborne and against the Low Down Buckeye are not correct The Osborne did not gire me satisfaction as stated It missed bundles and draft was in my judgement about one third heavier than tnat of the Low Down We tried the Buckeye Low Down to day Tuesday July 1 it did not miss tying a single bundle We cut some of the worst down and tangled oats I every saw We worked it in timothy and wire grass without its choking a single time while Osborne in the same grass choked down Wm McClay To all Whom it May Concdrn This is to certify that I have this day worked the Buckeye Low Down on the farm of Mr Wm McClay on the same field of grass in which the Osborne was tried a few day ago and I unhesitatingly say that the Low Down did splendid work cutting and binding to my entire satisfaction without any choking up My team of two horses pulled the Low Down with all ease through heavy down and tangled grain I ha seen elevator binders work but in my judgement the Low Down is superior to them all and is the machine which the farmers of this county need I worked the ma chine in very badly tangled oats which I dont think any elevator binder could have cut and bound in a satisfactory manner Daniel Crawford It was boasted last week through the press by the Osborne folks that on Mr McClays farm the Osborne worked like acharmandthateverybody who witnessed its work was satisfied of its superior merits In addition to the above we append statements from honorable reliable and responsible men which prove conclusively that the Osborne did not work like a charm and did not work satisfactory to everybody Witness the following Iwas present at the exhibition of the Osbome binder on Mr Mc Clays farm and will state that it not only choked downbut stalled the team Howk Again I was present at the exhibition of Osborne binder on the farm of Mr Wm McClay and will say that the Osborne did not work satisfactory CDTaylor I the undersigned will state that I heard Mr McClay say that the Osborne was not satisfactory to a single person at the exhibition except those directly interest in the Osborne Daniel Crawford The above statements are statements of plain facts and can not be denied questioned or explained away and we very respectfully submit them to the farmers of North Mo for con sideration KENNEDY LINK 3 jj rs4 1 2 Grundy County VM THEY ALL
