Little was known of the inhabitants of the Feejee Group nntU the riaii of the exploring expedition under LienL Wilkes.

Two of the officers of the exploring expedition, it is well known, were cruelly and treacherously murdered by the people of MJoki, one of the Leeward Islands. For a long time, the crews of vessels touching at the Feejee Islands and the missionaries residing npon them were in danger of being murdered, and indeed many murders have been committed, in punishment for which both English and French vessels have burnt their towns. Tbe disposition to outrage had become aggravated by the confusion consequent npon tbe attempt of Thakombau, one of the principal chiefs, to subject the whole gronp to bis sway. In tbe conflicts which ensued large numbers of prisoners were takes and roasted, according to their custom. The American Missionaries were thus pkced in great peril, which was rendered more imminent bv the in the jrrand ot tiu-this notice Iruce in Borne of hia romark3, whirli rAdrjRixrs colloquial rRcii rraplr.

onr young and rigoroas citr, our attention has been drawn to the remarkable success which has crowned the laudable efforts of Judge D. V. Bell, in the establishment of his -Commercial College. We hare watched with mnch interest the pro" gxess of tbe enterprise, and cheerfully express our high satisfaction that the result, while it has had a most salutary influence on the commercial dt-Etinies of onr city an influence the extent and importance of which cannot be actually estimated it has also liberally rewarded the industry, zeul and judgment of our friend Judge Bell. The causes of the greit success which has attended the enterprise are to be fonnd: first in the eminent capacity, the zeal and persererance of the I'residont; second, in the practical results of the education, afforded in the institution, as by the intelligent ousiness action ot its graduates after leaving its halls, and all because the course of instruction is strictly to a legitimate business education, crery thing practical and useful, and studionnly avoiding all claptrap and humbug; and third, in the wide-spread public confidence which the two preceding causes have inspired.

Vi some, we speculated npon its relati to the winter wheat, which Was thereby saved" from being winter-killed, and the abundance of tbe crop throughout a wide extent of country was no doubt in some measure due to such protection. Almost from the commencement of cold weather this season the ground has been covered with an uninterrupted coating of snow of sunicicnt depth to shield the plants from the effects that usually follow freezing and thawing when the ground is bare. It is too early to predict how mnch the snow may add to the yield of wheat fields; but if it should hold on till the first of March, and the spring thereafter prove favorable, we have no doubt that-it will be entitled to considerable credit in the general account. 1.M Prices vary from day to day, bnt Warranis can nsually be purchased here at from ont to two cents an acre advance on Eastern ceist. Tbe fpllowing statement from the Washington Union, will be of interest to dealers in Warrants 44 The above issue contains upwards of 5o0 per day, or about acres. It hes already been expected that the locations would be less during January and February than in other n.onths" and those most competent to judge hare expressed the opinion that by the ist of March, there would be a large accumulation of warrants on the market, and that efe this time, owing to the surplus, the price would be low as per acre, if not lower. "The calculations have been based upon the former issues, and the supply and demand ia corresponding months. It" is true the locations have never been as heavy during the former issues of warrants as during the present; but far as can be ascertained, not two-thirds ot the warrants issued have beon located vet certainly it is there is no surplus of warrants on the market.

This is probably owing to the fact that most of the warrants are" issued to parties who are not compelled to sell for the want of money, and hold their warrants for Ihe purpose of locating, or thai they may ohtaiu higher prices. The present demand is mostly from persons who are purchasing to locate lands on speculation, and not from the usual source that is, dealers at the West who purchase to sell to actual settlers. The advance of about five cents per acre during the last week, is probably occasioned by the severe snow storm, which has dt -laved the receipts of warrants by the warrantees going to the Conrt Houses to assign them. orders from the cities have come forward ia large numbers, while there are but few warrants to nic-et them." Mr. Jones, of ohiaimd the and the turther consideration of the subject was postponed until Monday. Adjourned. HorsK. Mr.

Pickman, from ihe Com. on Elections, offered a resolution empowering the Com njtttee to send for persons and papers in the Kansas couusted election c-tse. Mr. Phelps thought that the exercise of such a power would be an usurpation, as Mr. Reeder does not claim he was elected by virtue of the 1 iws passed by the Kansas Legislature.

He defended his constituents from thecharge of being border rn ins, which had been reported here and else. here by one Senator Wilson, who comes from a State where men war on defenceless women, and burn I rsnline Convents. He earnestly condemned the Ami-ft'avery men in Kansas, and claimed that the Missonrians desired no! the shedding of blood, bnt to sustain the law--. Mr. WiTshbnrno, of Maine, regretted that Mr.

Phelps had indulged in ach remarks, which were exceedingly exciting, not to say inflammatory. A la-ge majority of the people of this country believe in their hearts that there was no legislature in Kansas no laws, and nothing under which the election bad been held bv which Mr. Whitfield claims his seat as Delegate. This matter should be investigated, and he asked how could it be done unless power to send for persons and papers were granted. Debate on granting leave to the Committee on Elections to send for persons and papers in Kansas was continued.

Mr. Stephens remarked that Gov. Reedcr himself commissioned the members of the legislative assembly which passed the law, under which Mr. Heeder now called on the House to investigate; consequently all further proceedings were stopped. Mr.

The crew whs, however, saved oy a Toco Chief, for which act of humanity we made a collection of goods and sent to him to show our appreciation the act. This Chief had embraced Christianity, and great credit is due to the French Mission for the results of their labors. One of our boats, oh a trading cruise to the other islands, had three of the hands killed, aud the fourth taken on shore and put to a slow and cruel death.

A trading vessel, belonging to an American, put into a harbor to water, at one of the islands, and while there was attacked, his wife murdered, and the brains of his infant child knocked out on a stone before his eyes, and he was only spared to repair their muskets, being a handy man in that way. Another of our community was killed, and the stumps of his arms and legs stuck in the sand and fired at. A boat, containing four of our number, anchored at one of lite Windward Islands at dark, and was attacked by the natives. Three were killed, and the fourih shot in the leg, and carried on shore with his companions. The next day he was obliged to witness the horrible feast they were making upon the bodies of his comrades, and to listeu to the praises bestowed on the flesh of his friends.

The following day they cut off one of his legs, and compelled him to sit and see it devoured and ou the third ductile? finished him. The appetites of the natives having been whetted by the foregoing atrocities, and still craving for food for their depraved and savage disposition, our small community was again threatened. A correspondent of the Lwa State ir'actf; who traveled Taylor, Page and Montgomery pounties in the latter part of January, thns speaks of the intense severity of the weather: Emigrants to this new country, that came in late last fall, sutler much this winter; many art-living with merely the logs and roof on, with blankets hung up around the inside ro floor, and sometimes without a door or window to shut.

Their privations and stiffl-rings are greater, probably, this year than all previous ones. Many have exchanged comfortable homes in the East, and entered with their families the rude and unfinished cabin of onr frontier, exposed to the bleak winds of our prairies. The uncommonly cold winter has brought sorrow and distress to many who have enjoyed tho comforts and even luxuries ot life men who were unaccustomed to our prairies have ventured out, and frozen their limbs in a shocking manner. A mail carrier was taken from hak with his leps frozen, so that amputation will, in all probability, be necessarv. Hs hands were fhtzcnsn tight that the lines bad to be cut from them.

Many persons have frozen to death, and had been eaten by wolves. Thus protected, it required great precaution on their part to attack us, aud after several ineffectual attempts to cross Ihe trenches built round our town, they abandoned the attempt. The missionaries, as well as their tools (the natives) being foiled in their attempt at a massacre of all the Americans on this island, determined to push their malice to tbe last stroke, and the burning of our town was threatened. A native teacher, attached to the English Missionaries and employed by them, was detailed to commit this diabolical deed, aud, despite our vigilance, succeeded in accomplishing this dark design, at 10 o'clock, P.M., when all save the watch were wrapt ia sleep. Failiug to obtain any satisfaction of tbe native chiefs for these atrocities, Capt. The President is unwilling to believe that, in execu-tiue yonr duties as Goremer of the Territory, there'wili be any occasion to call in the aid of the Pnited States troops for that purpose, and it is enj lined upon you to do all that can possibly be done, before resorting to that measure. Yet, if it becomes indispensably necessary to do so, in order to execute the laws and preserve the peace, you are hereby authorized by the President to make requisitian upon the officers commanding the S. military forces at Forts lavenworth and for such assistance as may be needed for the above specified purpose. While confiding in the respect our cit.zens lor the laws, and the efficiency of the ordinary meins provided for protecting their rights and property, he deems it, however, not improper, considering the peculiar situation of pfriirs in the Territory of Kansas, that yon should be authorized to have the power herein conferred, with a view to meet any -extraordinary emergency that may arise, trusting that it will not be used until you shall find a resort to it unavoidable in order to insure the dne execution of the law, and to preserve the publx peace. Before actual interposition of tbe military force on any occasion, yon wilt cause the Proclamation of the President, with which you are herewith fumifhed, to be publicly read.

I am yonr very respectful and obt serr't, W.L. Mbct. To Hon. Wiix Shaxnox, Governor of the Territory of Kausas. Some pret'v sharp words passed between Senators Touoev and Wilson to-day as soon as the Kansas documents had been read.

Pending a motion to print, Senator Toocey made a set speech defense of the President, and avowing his own intentions to support the constitution and laws, and -concluding with the remark that certain gentlemen in this country would lose their vocation bv the action of tbe President, which would settle all difficulties in Kansas. Mr. Wilson rose to reply, and remarked that if the" Senator ailnded to him and those who acted with him, that servility to the Executive was not their vocation, whatever rt might be.
