btZ- Equine TNT Will Explode Monday at Arlington BY MAURICE VLB? Dust off the adjective "great." It is being called up for use Monday at Arlington Park. Used sparingly in thorobred racing, almost a haloed word, great has been used to describe only four or five horses in the last century and probably fewer races. But Monday's $100,000 added Washington Park handicap, annually one of the most important of the nation's mile events, looms as a "great" race no matter how you look at it. It probably will go down in the books as the greatest of all time. No more than seven or eight are expected to go post-ward but they represent concentrated equine TNT.

There are Kerr stable's Round. Table and E. Drake Swoon Son and the Herb Elliotts and Ron De- lanys of track and field have nothing on these two thoro bred milers. They currently are the richest horses in training. Round Table already has his million.

Swoon's Son is within shouting distance. Bardstown Healthy Again There is Calumet farm's Bardstown, 16 months ago the terror of the American turf. One of the sport's all-time great geldings, Bardstown now is in the bloom of health again, thanks to his crafty trainer, Jimmy Jones. There is Claiborne farm Nadir, leading claimant to the 1958 3 year-old championship. as strong and swift a son of the fabulous stallion, Nasrul- lah, as ever stepped foot on an American track.

Then there is Maine Chance farm's English-bred Tempest II, one of England's ranking thorobreds, currently unde feated in two American starts and possessed of as much potential as any in the field. They all have bursting, record breaking speed already displayed, already proved strong hint that Equipoise's 26 year old track record of 1:34 2-5 for one mile will top ple should a fast track prevail. All Capable of Speed Any one of the five men tioned is capable of shattering, let alone approaching Equipoise's standard. The rec ord speaks: On May 30, Round Table sped one mile in the Will Rogers stakes at Hollywood Park in 1:34 2-5. What he did once he can do again.

Aug. 9, Swoon Son siz zled the mile at Arlington in 1:34 4-5 over a "dull" strip in winning the Equipoise mile. On Aug. 6, Nadir streaked one mile in 1:34 3-5 in capturing a prep for the American derby. And he is just a 3 year old.

NEW PORTABLE COURT MADE FOR MICHIGAN Ann Arbor, Aug. 30 Special Michigan's varsity basketball squad will play on a new home floor next winter in Yost fieldhouse appropriately enough a Michigan hard maple court. The new surface replaces the original fieldhouse flooring made in 1922. It is slightly smaller than the original court, measuring 112 feet by 60 feet but with features that should eliminate dead spots or other deficiencies. It is laid down in 4 by 8 foot sections, each weighing 190 pounds, resting on 300 adjustable steel jacks to insure a level floor surface in contrast to the old concrete piers upon which the original floor rested.

It will take about two days to lay the portable floor or take it up, about one-half the time needed for the old court. I FIRST RACE Purse $2,750. 3 year track faM. In winning her third consecutive race, Outer Space broke from the 12th post position as Mabel D. Lewis' Princess set the early lead followed by Any Morn. Eldon Nelson, aboard Outer Space, was seventh after quarter of a mile, then moved into sixth on the turn and took the lead at the eighth pole. Aug. 30 W) Tudor Era scored a front-running three length victory in Saturday's Olympic handicap at Atlantic City as the betting choice of 28,593 fans. So they are not going to be saved for lesser purses such as the Foxcatcher." Few Old Horses Entered The Foxcatcher purse goes between $4,000 and $5,000. "At one time, only one or two other steeplechase exceeded it," du Pont said.

Now overnight races are worth that much. As a result, entries for this year's Foxcatcher were only a few old horses. There is a lack of horses who can negotiate those jumps to begin with. Rather than put on a poor race, I preferred to call it off." 4th Harness Meeting Set for Opening Suburban Downs, offering a pair of $25,000 races during its 39 night program, will open the fourth and final harness racing meeting of the season Monday night at Maywood Park. President Erwin Dygert Saturday said everything was in readiness after an inspec tion tour of the plant.

Additional improvements have been made in the May- wood plant, bringing to the total spent this year. A new entrance on 5th avenue will be opened. Improvements made in the clubhouse and grar I-tand, offering added weather protection, will be available for the first time. Horsemen have also benefitted with improvements in the paddock and barn areas. Horses Move In Racing Secretary Bob Larry said Saturday that the May- wood barns are nearly filled to capacity.

Del Insko, who is recovering from injuries suf fered in a spill at Sportsman's Park Aug. 27, has the largest stable with 26 horses. The young reinsman will be trying for his fifth straight Chicago area driving crown, a string he started at the Suburban Downs meeting last fall. Other leading reinsmen awaiting the opening are Wayne Curly Smart, Red Scott, Harry Fitzpatrick and his sons, Jimmy and Jerry, Harold Snodgrass, Jack Han-kins, Don Busse, Herman Graham Tom Graham, Hollis Regur, Ray Wagner, Mai Weaver, Elmer Conrad, Jim McGarity and Jack Leonard. Each Tuesday night women will be admitted free to the clubhouse or grandstand.
