TV SCREENINGS Bob Foster ENTERTAINMENT TV-RADIO-MOVIE-DRAMA-HOLLYWOOD KTVU (2) KRON-TV (4) KPIX (5) TV LOG KGO-TV (7) KQED (9) KNTV (11) Dinah Shore tried her hand at drama; Hall of Fame presented a beautifully produced Easter play; Omnibus tried its hand at music, and NBC presented a two-hour version of "Boris Godunov." That was yesterday on television. All-in-all it was a delightful day of top draw television. At noon Moussorgsky's famous opera "Boris Godonov" in color took the airlanes, with John Oilman's English translation of the story of Godunov and the ghost of a murdered prince. The Moussorgsky music was well handled by Giorgio Tozzi, Gloria Lane, Frank Poretta, and Andrew McKinley. Although in an opera house, this opera would run considerably longer, the NBC Opera company came off in fairlv good style with the two-hour version.

-A- LATER IN THE afternoon talented Edie Adams, Myron McCormick and Robert Goulet presented "An Omnibus of Songs" telling the story of American music from the Victorian Era to the present day. It was well, but simply produced, with the music being the thing. Production values were such that when Miss Adams, McCormick or the dancers were on camera, full attention was received by audience. Despite this, the music was predominent. "Reuben and Rachel," "Bamboo Tree" and "Little Yellow Bird" from the late years of the Nineteenth century were highlighted, while from the early years of the present century came such happy tunes as "Frivolous Sal," "Shimmy Me," "Nobody" and "I Love You So." Than came the fabulous and long lasting songs of the World War I era.

Unlike most wars in history, World War I did produce popular music which has lasted. This was reviewed with presentations of such tunes as "Oh How I Hate to Get Up In The Morning," "Till We Meet Again," "A Long, Long Trail" and "Pack Up Your Troubles." Miss Adams, one of the top performers in show business today, did a journeyman-like job, and Myron McCormick, who drew a goodly number of laughs in "No Time For Sergeants," joine'd in the fun, his gravel voice adding a touch of humor to the whole thing. "Omnibus's" first effort at popular music came off in fine style. DINAH SHORE is a top singer, and as fine a mis tress of ceremonies as one can find in show business today, but I fear she'll never win an academy award as a dramatic actress. Not that Dinah was bad, she just isn't an actress as we know them.

Last night in "Brief Encounter," the Noel Coward story of a married woman's love for a married doctor, Dinah tried her hand at straight drama. It wasn't a bad performance. In fact I wouldn't have thought that she would do so well. It is hard, when watching this delightful woman, to forget she is Dinah Shore, even in this story set in the early years of the current century. PLAYING OPPOSITE her was Ralph Bellamy, one of Broadway and Hollywood's top actors.

Fortunately for Miss Shore and the producers, Bellamy is a real pro and contributed a lot to keeping the play on an entertaining basis. 0947). 11 COMMAND PLAYHOUSE 1:00 A.M. 4 ALMANAC NEW5RREL 1:30 A.M. 5 LIFE OF RILEY 'Two for Seesaw 1 Poignant BARBARA BLADEN Times Drama Critic One of the most realistic plays contemporary life to succeed on the modern'stage is "Two for he Seesaw" being directed by Aldo Bozzini for the Company of the Golden Hind on Pacific street: It is gratifying adult drama without being overly dramatic, maudlin or excessively theatrical. It poses a realistic problem of loneliness and indecision, tracing its inception and resolving It without tragedy or mystery.

The two character play is set i New York, its dingy rooms in eparate parts of town are seen imultaneously, each taking on be occupant's personality. Here are reflected the beginning, progress and end of a love affair. Ruth Cowafl.as a Polish-Jewess born in the'Bronx is vivacious and loving. Her' exuberance and sincerity, not even marred by a frankness bordering on vulgarity create in the character of Gitte Mosca the symbol of youthfu innocence. As a hurt and disillusioned attorney who has left an unfaithful wife in Omaha.

Nebraska and migrated, unhappily to New York to find independence, Mel Dir lacks tenderness. His actions are forceful to the point of constant anger and he loses audience sympathy by being resentful and righteous. The clue to his character should come from Gittel's line, "you know what I think you got too much of, lack of self-confidence." The short lived romantic companionship they find together during the year it takes for him to re-evaluate his emotions, gives them both new-found strength of character and purpose. In spite of wanting to divorce his wife, he maintains a Midwestern chivalry toward the woman he never ceased to love. In the end he returns to her, thereby releasing Gittel to find herself again in her own environment.

The play is not high-powered, although the director has allowed to build from too high a level of emotion, nor does it moralize. It is rather an insight into two private lives, whose personalities and problems may well' be our own. It's a comedy in character, not in situation.
