It was a smart crack, but it isn't true. Politics is what makes a city liveable, and taxes bearable.

Because I live here and 1 want to have good representation, I'm going to vote to keep Carrol Speers on the council. I'll tell you exactly why I'm going to vote for him on April 2. I've watched him during the 12 years he has been on the council. During that time, he has occupied the place of the ordinary citizen on the council, not representing any interest except people like himself, like me--and like you. It's the result that pays off.

During the time Carrol Speers has been on the council, his good judgment, and sincere willingness to listen to the people have helped make San aMteo the- good, healthy community it is today. That's why our home and business values are sound and higher than they have ever been. That's why we have developing retail and business centers. That's why at the same time city taxes have kept within reason, and the good essential'services of the city have been improved year after year. Carrol Spsers stands for a sensible expansion of the city's park and recreation program.

He stands for the preservation of property values and insurance of these values through good planning and careful zoning decisions. He stands for the promotion of the right kind of industrial development. His record is there for you to read. The way I feel about it is we have a good man in office. His years of former service on the planning commission (8 years) and on the elementary school board years) have given him the kind of understanding of interrelated community problems that we need today.

We need that kind of understanding because it means a lot to the progress of a growing city. As for me, I have found I can depend on Carrol Speers' fair judgment and impartial decisions. I've found him to be a representative with integrity, ability, and courage. And, he has not forgetten the individual counts, too. For these reasons, I'm going to vote for Carrol Speers, next Tuesday, April 2.

I hope you do, too. Sincerely, WINIFRED BURKE 334 North San Mateo Drive, Retired Principal Turnbull School, Lifelong resident of San Mateo.
