1956, Field Enterprises, Inc. "Christmas Carol" to Get Two Showcasing SAND NOT SUITABLE BORREGO I Calif. gUP)--Officials of the De Anza jCountry Club, building a new 'rgolf course in this Southern California desert region, discovered an They couldn't find any sand suitable for sandtraps. The Piano-Organ-Mandolin Combination Saloon Pieces al The Swinging Door 106 East 25th San Mateo By ALINE MOSBY United Press Hollywood Writer (UP)-- Christmas two TV networks are unabashedly handing viewers the identical present--musical versions of the Charles Dickens' classic, "A Christmas Carol." At the demand of fans. CBS-TV is running for the third season its 90-minute filmed musical version of the famous story.

Fredric March and Basil Rathbone are stars of the presentation Thursday evening. And, as if one good show calls for another. NBC-TV is staging the same Dickens' sotry on Dec. 23--also as a musical. If this show looks familiar, it may be because Basil Rathbone, the ghost in the CBS version, will be seen as Scrooge on NBC.

Singers in NBC Version The NBC musical, re-named "The Stingiest Man in Town," also will star real singers--Patrice Mtinsel, Vic Damone and Johnny Desmond. The CBS show was made two years ago by producer-director Ralph Levy, who took the idea to the network because he wanted to try something more serious than his Jack Benny program. He graciously says he doesn't mind that NBC is musicalizing "Christmas Carol," too. "More power to them," he said. "We've been doing our version longer.

Besides, I'm sure they'll have a different treatment. I must say I don't approve of popular singers for the classics. Damone and Desmond are good but I wouldn't fool with the classics that way. Our version is more like an operetta." Purists Pacified idea of setting Dickens' The story to music at first appalled the purists. After the first CBS showing of Christmas Carol" on "Shower of Stars," the spon-' sor raked in "several thousand letters." Some were laudatory, others complaining.

"But the rating was good so the show was run again last year, and we received even more letters of praise," Levy said. "This year the sponsor got many letters from viewers wanting to know if the show would be repeated again this season." "More power to "em," he said. Carmel Used In Film 'Julie' By LESLIE I)ARD A suspense drama involving an insane husband determined to kill lis lovely wife is unreeled in "Julie," which was filmed against Monterey and Carmel area sackgrounds. Doris Day plays a tense and breathless" Julie in this feature, which will open tonight at the Peninsula theater. Her jealous mate in his pell-mell melodrama is portrayed by Louis Jourdan.

The entire effort might be subtitled "The Perils of Julie." For example, in the opening scene, she and Jourdan have had a row while they're out driving. He stamps his foot down on the accelerator and they're off and running. When she discovers that Jourdan killed her first husband he had rigged the death to look like suicide Julie takes tiff and keeps going, specifically in the direction of the Sa Francisco police. She checks in at a hotel under an assumed name. But soon the phone rings and Jourdan's voice comes through: "Julie, you are going to die." Director-writer Andrew Stone seemingly was determined to keep Miss Day in a state of frazzled nerves for the entire 106 minutes of running time.

And he has fairly well succeeded. The police listen to her story-but they can't help her without proof. A friend, Barry. Sullivan, tries to protect her, and Jourdan almost put him out of commission for good. When the police finally do move in to help, Julie is on her way downstairs while they're going up in the elevator.

All this can only end in one really tense sequence, and so it does, high in the clouds on an airliner, where Julie is plying her old trade as a plane stewardess. Who shows up? The mad Mr. Jourdan. And he kills one pilot, wounds another before he himself is brought down with a fatal bullet wound. Which leaves Doris with the task of bringing down the craft safely (with a bit of help from the control tower), although she never has piloted a plane before.

Stone has staged this film strictly for the excitement inherent in the situations in which he has placed Miss Day. IN SHOR.T: Chase melodrama. Macadamia, Nut Tree Search Is On RIVERSIDE, Calif.
