KOBY a Hit With Area Listeners By BOB FOSTER Recently, wherever we have been where radios are played, our favorite lunchroom, any number of gasoline stations, barber shops and shoe shine parlors, they all seemed to be tuned to a brand new voice in the bay area. This voice, once just about as unlistened to as a bay area station could be, as KEAH, is now striking the iancy of residents in increased numbers. couldn't help recall'a letter we received shortly after it was announced that Steve Cisler had leased REAR to Mid-America Broadcasters, the current operators. This obviously a partisan of "good music," predicted that KOBY could never possibly appeal to the bay area. (She overlooked the fact that the station would have a new audience when it changed from classics to pops.) But never-the-less she insisted there was too much popular music on the air, and that one more new station would never be accepted.

How wrong this Jady was. KOBY, the new call for REAR, has proven an audience builder without precedence. The mail has been almost overwhelming and most of the station's promotion stunts have proved highly successful. More and more letters to us have indicated that the public likes KOBY, and are enjoying what they hear. A couple of days back we had a talk with Dave Segal, the present operator of the station.

"The response to our station by Northern California audiences have been beyond all expectation," Segal informed us, "We are catching on here much faster than we ever anticipated. usually takes from six to nine months to build a big audience for our new programming concept, but it looks like going to cut that period short." We asked Segal just how he picked his top tunes. We suggested that maybe he did like so many other stations; ran out and bought the latest issue of "Billboard" or "Cash Box," he straightened us out in a hurry. "No," he said, "we couldn't do that and come up with an honest list of the top tunes in this area. We call record shops in the bay area each week and find out just which records are selling best.

Every area in the country is different," he explained. "We program a station in Boston," he went on, and the top tunes in Boston are quite different from the list of top tunes In San Francisco and the bay area." Although Segal's center of operation is Denver, he is currently making his headquarters in San Francisco until a strike against his station by NABET is settled." "I think I'll move out here permanently," he said with a smile, "I sure like this city." Segal seemed pretty confident that KOBY would grab the largest hunk of audience in the bay area within a year. "In most areas where we operate, our stations have the largest share of the audience." In Denver he told us, Segal's station has more than 40 per cent of the audience with the rest of the radio audience split between seven other stations. "We hope to do that here, too," he said hopefully. At the rate things are going, KOBY may well do that here.
