NEW YORK, Nov. York police push back pickets demonstrating outside Park avenue headquarters of Russia's United Nations staff. While a celebration of thirty-ninth anniversary of the Red revolution inside, a surging, shouting crowd of 3000, many of them Hungarian descent, demonstrated noisily on the street. Later the crowd was dispersed. None was injured.

The following day he underwent brain surgery. Until today he had been described as in fair condition. Field i i one of the world's greatest fortunes--in the neighborhood of 160 million dol- lion dollars from his merchant grandfather, founder of the Chicago department store bearing his name. Since his grandfather died in 1906, the estate was not subject to federal inheritance taxes. As a young man, Field was interested in polo, airplanes, fox hunting, horse racing and the like, and his social set included the Prince of Wales, later the Duke of Windsor.

As he outgrew his "playboy" phase, he became deeply interested in philantrophy and social service, particularly for the welfare of children. Founded Paper He expanded his enterprises and founded the Chicago Sun in 1941 as a supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The newspaper challenged the strongly intrenched anti Roosevelt Chicago Tribune, then the only morning newspaper in Chicago. In 1942 he became sole owner of the New York tabloid PM, which he had helped to found as a stockholder in 1940.

PM, which had a strong left-of- complexion, pioneered many innovations but was never a financial success. He sold the paper in 1946. The Chicago Sun, later the Sun- Times, became an established newspaper in Chicago and in 1950 Field's son, actually the fourth of the family to bear the name, became its editor and publisher. Book Firm The Field Enterprises also included the book publishing firm of Simon Schuster and Pocket Books, Inc. During World War II, Field devoted much of his time to refugee children in America.

He turned over his Long Island estate, Caumsett, for an Office of War Information training school. DYED TO MATCH Fur jackets dyed to match woolen dresses make luxurious fall and winter costumes. He': being tagged and part of him is getting a new paint job. The conservation departmen' is out to determine the migra tory habits of the animals and also to keep them away from north country dumps where they congregate. The men trap and tag the bears and haul them of to distant parts of the woods believing the burly bruins are getting too close to civilization for comfort. In some areas, notably Fourth Lake, the bears nightly attrac huge crowds during their foray to the village dump. Letters to the Editor Editor, Tunes: For about 11 years, I have been an ardent supporter of the admiiii stration of the Redwood City Elementary schools.

I have done thi in a sincere belief that they wen trying to do a good job of educating our children in the basic funda of reading, writing and arithmetic. But much to my surprise th board of trustees have voted follow the recommendations of Mr Spinas and his administrative of ficers to refuse to allow any dren to be excused from schoo the last hour of the day four time a month to attend catechism classes in their respective church No, I don't believe that eithe: of the members of the board Mr. Spinas or his administrate officers intend to follow a course of bigotry, but I believe that un wittingly they have done just this It seems funny to me that school system that can't excuse ou children for an hour a week fo catechism can allow these childrei to attend classes in costume day on Hallowe'en, excuse them from classes to paint witches pic tures on the windows of the loc merchants, excuse them school to attend fairs, visit facturing plants, possibly to atten the races or ball games. In other words, maybe what ail the country, the state, the count and the city is that 'due to mis placed values our boards of educa tion have more respect for busines than they do for religious educs tion. In other words our education: system seems to take the positio that music lessons, Hallowe'en fun picnics and visits to National Moto Bearing are more important than better education in true teachin of God.

I believe that it is the duty our educational system as well a we parents to lean over back wards to see that our children no only learn their three R's but alsc that they further their educatio better Americans under God. Hoping that our school admin and the board of trustee see the error of their ways an reverse their previous action. Respectfully, REX E. BENHAM.
