Iff)--A slow moving storm which battered Florida with high winds and torrential rains moved north along the Atlantic coast today, kicking up heavy seas. A Miami weather bureau bulletin said the storm was centered this morning near Vero Beach, with winds of 20 to 40 miles an hour extending 300 miles north of the center. After the center moves offshore, the weather bureau said the storm might intensify slightly while switching to a north- northeasterly course.

Back in 1945 composer Gordon Jenkins gazed out of his penthouse window in New York and was inspired to write a series of songs about his love for the city, loosely tied together with a narration by actor Elliott Lewis. Joseph McKim, 42, a Redwood City laborer, was sentenced to San Quentin for the fifth time yesterday.

McKim, who lives at 2794 Sus- sere way, Redwood City, was arrested June 11 in San Bruno. He admitted burglarziing two tract homes, taking some inexpensive furnishings. Presiding Superior Judge Aylett R. Cotton granted a five-day stay before McKim is taken to prison for the fifth time. He has a criminal record dating back to 1928.

He first went to prison in 1933 for assault with a deadly weapon. He made San Quentin again in 1939 for escaping from San Francisco county jail. He was returned to prison 1942 and 1954 for burglary. George Silliman, 35, San Mateo larterider, was sentenced to six months in county jail on his ilea of guilt to a charge of granc heft. He admitted taking S600 rom the bar where he worked to gamble.

Deputy District Attorney Jrian Rowson said Silliman also passed 58 phony checks in thre Judge Cotton grantee lim credit for time served.in i2il awaiting sentence. Zephyr STOCKTON (UP)--Western Pacific reported Monday its east and westbound Zephyr streamliners were delayed Sunday when a horse caught its feet between the ties of a trestle over the Calaveras River. Police and repair crews worked 35 minutes to free the horse from the 200-foot high trestle. A railroad spokesman said the horse was injured so severely he will have to be destroyed.

The horse was being ridden by a 13-year-old boy when its feet slipped and became wedged between the ties. PIT Workers Vote on Walkout SAN FRANCISCO OP) --Telephone workers in Northern California and Nevada voted today whether to go on strike against the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company. The board supervisors gave the measure final passage Monday, together with one amending the police code to classify such knives as dangerous and deadly weapons. "Honestly, I really am floating," said Miss Arthur as she anchored herself firmly to a restaurant seat. "It's all so fantastic. So fantastic the way it has all happened." What has happened to Miss Arthur is Ernie Kovacs. The 21-year- old blonde from San Jose, (Miss Arthur, that is. Kovacs is the Hungarian with the cigar) iw now working on "Tonight' shows a Kovacs' sidekick and chief female vocalist.

She has replaced another blonde, Edie Adams, who is Kovacs' wife, but who has deserted her husband's TV diggins for a role in an upcoming Broadway musical. Touring On West Coast "I was touring with, an industrial show that had reached the West Coast," said Miss Arthur, "when I heard that Ernie had flown to Los Angeles to hold auditions to replace Edie Adams in his cast. "You look too much like Edie Adams. I said to myself, and they won't like you--you know, she's always been a big favorite of mine," said Miss Arthur irrelevantly but enthusiastically. "Anyway, I just wandered in and they asked me to sing and I sand 'The Man That Got Aways' and 'Get But Ernie just sat there with his cigar not saying anything.

I thought he didn't like me. "Then I was asked to do Different dialects Italian, Russian, Irish, Cockney, Brooklyn, German and a Louella Parsons type. But all Ernie did was nod his head a and I still couldn't tell. And figured to myself they probably rant the glamorous type and I'm ot sophisticated enough." However, Miss Arthur, a blue- yed charmer, turned out to be iovacs' dish of goulash. "It was so fantastic when I earned I had the job," said Miss Arthur.

"You hear about this sort if thing happening to other girls, ut you say to ypurself it'll never lappen to me. You get so discouraged. But the way it happened me, it should happen to everybody." Biggest Break Miss Arthur, reared in St. Louis where her parents now live, had a couple of flings on radio and TV shows in St. Louis, won a Garry Moore TV talent contest, racked up five victories on "Chance Of A Lifetime" and worked in several night sports.

But the Kovacs spot is her big break. "My mother worries about me like all mothers," said Miss Ar- thur. "The first night the Kbvacs show went on, my mother and father made arrangements with the phone company to see the show--they don't get it back home.
