Saturday, August 3, 1963 Sister City Committee Tells Plans Members of (lie steering committee of the Sister City-Town Affiliation committee met Wednesday to make plans for an active "people to people" program now that Toyanaka, Japan is officially San Matco's sister city. Correspondence from the Toy- anaka branch of the Sumitoma bank to the Sumitoma bank of San Francisco was read by Frank Minami, San Francisco branch president, noting that July '23 was the official approval date for San Mateo's sister city affiliation with Toyanaka and expressing their congratulations. It also stated that three of the Japanese students visiting in a YMCA group will be from Toyanaka. The 27th anniversary of Toy- onaka is October 15 and the city intends to invite Mayor Wisner to attend its celebration. Bill Goss of the College of San Mateo, chairman of International Services for the Rotary club at tended the meeting to outline de- a i the August 22 Rotary- luncheon i where the YMCA student group from Japan and the three students from San Mateo who travelled to Japan last summer will be Robert Doerr, San Jose councilman and chairman of the League of California Cities committee on international municipal co-operation, Jake Oiwa, president of the Japanese- American Citizens league, Jim Xakacla, co-ordinator of the four Japanese organizations in San Mateo, and Minami were also at the meeting. Donald Mueller attended to represent the mayor and the city council of San Mateo.

Committee members present were Ed Bowles, representing the selection committee; Frank Ganino, chairman of the membership committee and Thomas Duffy, chairman of the reception committee, who gave a report on the June 3 reception for students participating in the people to-people program and those in the California Youth Symphony now in Japan. Jacob Solow, Haruo Jshimaru and Wilson Makabe were present as members of the committee. Mary Sooy of the Bus iness and Professional Women's club and Mrs. R. A.

Bukove of the San Mateo Junior Women's club attended as representatives of their organizations. The next meeting of the steering committee will be August 14 at 8 p.m. at Pilgrim plaza in th social half. Emphasis then will be on membership, and a general meeting is being planned for September 18 when all organizations will be invited. They will be asked to participate by contacting their own like organizations in Toyonaka and building a true pcople-to-pcople relationship.

Veterans JL f'O-Ifc- jJv M. Reunion Veterans of one of the greatest fighting teams of World War II the 101st Airborne division -will meet in San Francisco's Sheraton-Palace hotel August 1518 for their 18th annual reunion. This will be (he first time the reunion has been held in San FYan- cisco and only the second time it has been held on the west coast. The 101st, or Screaming Eagle division, led the Normandy invasion and fought in Belgium, Holland, the Rhinelancl and central Europe. It.s defense of Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge is one of the brightest chapters of American military history.

It is the only division in army history to be awarded two Presidential Unit citations. The San Francisco meeting is expected to draw members from the entire nation, according to Jack Podesta, San Francisco, general chairman for the reunion. A special contingent of 50 troopers from the present active 101st Airbone division at Fort Campbell, also will be attending. Gen. Maxwell D.

Taylor, chairman of the U. S. joint chiefs of staff and wartime 101st commander, is expected to attend the reunion. Maj. Gen.

Thomas L. Sherburne (USA who was division artillery commander during the war and later division commander, will also be present. Invited to be key speaker at the reunion is Walter Cronkite, CBS news correspondent, who saw first hand the 101st in action during his on-the-spot coverage of the fighting in Holland.
