IV SCREENINGS Bob Foster ENTERTAINMENT TV-RADIO-MOVIE-DRAMA-HOLLYWOOD KTVU (2) KRON-TV (4) KP1X (5) By BOB POSTER Experience has shown that it takes about two years for a really successful show to grab the lion's share of the audience. The shows which become sensations in their first season usually don't become so-called household words" until the second or third season. The second year of a show is the one that usually 7 LONE A is the critical one. A show which does fairly well itsi 'CAROUSEL first year and gets a second chance usually has to make ST the grade the second season out or it is doomed. This week one of the large rating services came up with a report on the shows on the air season comparing this year's audience with that of last year.

ABC SHOWS FARED PRETTY well" with "Adventures in Paradise," "Donna Reed Show," "Hawaiian Eye." "Leave It to Beaver," "Real McCoys," "Rebel," "77 Sunset Strip," "Untouchables" and "Walt Disney" all showing increases in audience. "The Untouchables" showed the greatest increase of any show on the air with an audience hike of some 63 per cent over last year. "Cheyenne," "Saturday Night Fights," Lawrence Welk," a i "Ozzie and Harriet," "Peter Gunn," "Rifleman," "Detectives," and "Wyatt Earp" all were down with "Ozzie and Harriet" and 'Saturday Night Fights" showing 17 per cent losses, to lead the list. At NBC the situation is this: "Alfred Hitchcock," "Bachelor Father," "Bat Masterson," "Dinah Shore Chevy Show," "Ernie Ford Show," "Loretta Young," "Perry Como," "People Are Funny," "Price Is "Riverboat," "This Is Your Life," "Wagon Train," "Groucho Marx" are all down. Biggest audience lost over last season goes to the "Perry Como Show" which has dropped by 27 percent.

The shows at NBC showing an increase in audiences! are, "Bell Telephone Hour," "Bonanza," "The Deputy," "Laramie," with "Bonanza" showing the greatest increase with 63 percent. THE STORY AT CBS seems to be mostly on the down side with the following shows showing audiences losses. "Ann Sothern," "Danny Thomas," "Ed Sullivan Show," "Father Knows Best" (repeat); "G-E Theatre," "Gunsmoke," "Hennesey," "I've Got a Secret," "Jack Benny Show," "June Allyson Show." "Lassie," "Perry Mason," "Person to Person," "Red Skelton," "Twilight Zone," "U.S. Steel'Hour," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "What's My Line" and "Zane Grey A Sothern Show has shown'a 60 percent loss. Those showing audience increases were "Dobie Gillis," "Dennis the Menace," "Garry Moore Show," "Have Gun, Will Travel," "Rawhide," "To Tel! the Truth." The biggest increase was the Garry Moore Show; with 25 percent more audience.

In the overall, picture ABC showed more shows enjoying larger audiences, while CBS had the fewest shows with an increased audience. If some of your favorite shows should suddenly leave the air, you'll know the, reason why. The sponsor, the network or the agencies aren't happy with sliding ratings. This week chairman of the board William Pdley returned from a trip to Europe and started to take the place apart. It seems lie's not a bit happy about the way the American Broadcasting Company is grabbing all the ratings with the "blood and thunder" program setup, and he wants action. Look for a lot of changes at CBS, not so much in the "brass" section, but in the shows. I'll wager a penny or two that CBS will be negotiating a deal with some maior picture studio to come up with some "high quality" adventure shows. 7:00 A.M.
