CHICAGO TRIBUNE ARTS ENTERTAINMENT SECTION 7 SUNDAY MARCH 25, 2001 14 "Where the Girls Are." While most of the rock community has abandoned the sexual imperative, the Gossip dish it with zeal. C.N. TALES FROM THE FRONT Long wait for true love will leave her waiting Recordings Rock Shawn Colvin Bonefields (Columbia) Colvin's 1996 album, "A Few Small Repairs," was her "Blood on the Tracks," a meditation on divorce that also lifted her out of the singer-songwriter ghetto when it sold a million-plus copies and got a pair of Grammys (for "Sunny Came "Bonefields" picks up where "Repairs" left off, with the rueful "Matter of Minutes" could count the good times we had on one but then perks up with the irresistible "A Whole New You" and its sparser but no less engaging bookend, "Nothing Like You." Still, Colvin feels most comfortable taking melancholy strolls through producer John Leventhal's subtle folk-pop soundscapes. "Another Plane Went Down" is the centerpiece, rich in memory, regret and quiet devastation. Colvin's voice is free of histrionics, the melodies are plaintively memorable, and the tone is one of resilience in the face of inevitable heartache.

Greg Kot Electric Wizard Dopethrone (The Music Cartel) Suggested subtitle for the second album by one of England's more singleminded bands: NO PUSSfS Ot lAil AUDUOdlUMS MOVlt FUN TKKFTS A a FEATURf STADIUM XNOFtlHNKX flA feJV SWING WITH DISCOUNT I St. IWGITAl SOUND Idlewild 100 Broken Windows (Capitol) Dropping references to postmodernism and Gertrude Stein in their hyper-earnest lyrics, these Scottish lads sound like they would have fit right in with the American college-rock scene of the late '80s. They also pick up on that era's sonic cues, blasting terse chunks of guitar-mangled melody like they've worn out several copies of the Pixies' "Surfer Rosa" and Su-perchunk's "No Pocky for Kitty." Idlewild aren't reinventing anything, but they sound like they're ready to storm the barricades of complacency with these tunes, and that's sometimes enough. Le Tigre From The Desk of Mr. Lady (Mr.

Lady) Just in time for a new Bush administration, Le Tigre (featuring Kathleen Hanna, late of riot-grrrl pioneers Bikini Kill) return with a lo-fi dance-punk EP to fuel the revolution. "Get Off the Internet" frets about bla-sea been-there-done-that attitudes toward political music, then packs a flame-thrower refrain that convinces us direct action is more necessary than ever. With just a few punches all from the left this disc lands a knockout. Chris Nelson Spoon Girls Can Tell (Merge) Surrounded by a bumper crop of other indie rock bands when they emerged in the mid-'90s, Spoon got a quiet reputation for making some of the genre's best songs, assuming great expectations that linger to this day "Girls Can Tell" continues the gradual shedding of the Austin, Texas, group's alternative-rock strumming and branches out with a noir-ish album that calls on mellotrons, vibes and violas. They've smoothed some of the postpunk jags that originally-helped distinguish them, but they wear the refinement well.

Britt Daniels' emotive rasp can make what are often angry songs sound sexy. Jason Roth The Gossip That's Not What I Heard (Kill Rock Stars) Transplants to D.I.Y. mecca Direct to Olympia, from Searcy, this raw, rock 'n' roll three-piece brings some much-needed Southern sass and sex to the uptight indie-rock scene. Every grooving guitar chop starts a swing of the hips, every rudimentary pound on the drums sets a shoulder shimmying, and nothing douses singer Beth Ditto's fire. She melts "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" into a come-on in "Swing Low," and boasts about her love in Brittany knows if she and Sam are ever going to get together, she's the one who's going to have to make it happen.

She's prepared to do so. But, so far, it hasn't worked. "The closer I try to get, the more distant he becomes." A few months ago, she wrote him a letter telling him how she feels. He never acknowledged it. Every time she has set up a date, he has gotten out of it.

She invited him out for his birthday. He never finalized the plans. She called, but he never returned her calls. She left his birthday present at his front door. He never thanked her.

"I have finally decided I've gone as far as I can. The next step has to come from him. He certainly can have no doubts about the depth of my feelings for him. I've now been waiting since November to hear from him. We've run into each other a couple times on the street and he always seems genuinely happy to see me.

We laugh and talk like crazy, but he never makes any promises to call me, like he used to, even if he never did follow though with the promises. "I'm depressed and miserable, and I've never cried so much in my life. There are days when it is all I can do to get out of bed. My friends tell me to forget him. One has even gone so far as to say there was never anything there and that it was all my imagination, but I know it wasn't.

I know there is something there and I'll wait for him regardless of how long it takes. It took me 43 years to feel a love this strong." Women, do you fall for bad boys? Men, do you fall for crazy girls? Send your tale, along with your relationship problems, to Cheryl Lavin, Tales from the front, Chicago Tribune, 435 N. "More romantic odes about drugs, death and Satan." Unlike their American stoner-rock counterparts, who owe as much to punk and grunge as they do to metal, the new wave of British headbangers acts as if the '80s never happened. The reference points on "Dopethrone" are the doomy grind of early-'70s Black Sabbath and the barbarian boogie of Motorhead. Distortion is as crucial a component as melody, Jus Oborn's vocals are riotously over-the-top, and the power-trio interplay is all about building the perfect bulldozer.

Here he leads an ensemble featuring trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, bassist William Parker and drummer Gerald Cleaver, the quartet playing Shipp compositions of unusual lyric beauty and textu-ral spaciousness. No instrument predominates, with each artist contributing equally to the sonic fabric. Though conservative ears may find this music challenging, adventurous listeners will be struck by the recording's often-melancholy tone and understated gestures.

Howard Reich Classical Mahler: Symphonies (9) New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein, conductor (Sony Classical, 12-CD box) Record collectors of a certain age will recall their excitement in the late '60s when Columbia Records issued the first cycle of the Mahler symphonies with Leonard Bernstein conducting. The set was for many an introduction to these works, which needed the fervent advocacy and passionate understanding of Bernstein to take their rightful place in the mainstream repertory. These inimitable performances, classics of their kind, have now been remastered and gathered in a specially priced box set. They include Bernstein's first studio recordings of all nine symphonies, plus the Adagio from the unfinished 10th as well as performances of "Kin-dertotenlieder" with Jenny Tourel and Janet Baker, plus four Rueckert songs. Lenny rerecorded the cycle beginning roughly a decade later for DG, but those interpretations go in for emotional overkill compared to the 1960s accounts, which temper Bernstein's subjective enthusiasm with the freshness of discovery.

A black mark to Sony for omitting "Das Lied von der Erde1' and "Des Knaben Wunderhorn." Otherwise, the set includes a general essay by Tim Page; Bernstein's classic essay, "Mahler: His Time Has and texts for the vocal works but no program notes for any of the symphonies. Doesn't it? It rewards those who take the bull by the horns and make things happen. Doesn't it? It rewards those who aren't willing to settle. Or does it? Brittany says that all her life, she's accepted the hand she was dealt "and played it out as best I could.

Ifl make a decision, good or bad, I stick by it to the end." Among her bad decisions was her marriage, 'without a doubt, the biggest mistake of my life." But she refused to end it. "I had a messed-up childhood, and I have a strong need for security. Being alone scares me. Besides, there was no reason to upset the apple cart. I had nowhere else to go and no one I was interested in being with.

I travel extensively for my job-it's one of my escape routes and in all my travels I hadn't met anyone I cared to share a cup of tea with, much less change my life for." That changed a year and a half ago. Brittany ran into some friends she hadn't seen in a while. In the middle of hugs and greetings, she felt, for the first time in her life, "those proverbial lightening bolts and fireworks. I didn't know what to do or say. I was speechless.

All I could do was stare. It sounds crazy, but I fell in love like that with a man I had known for 20 years." Sam had just gotten divorced, and he made it clear that he was not ready to get involved. But the attraction was undeniable. They started calling and having lunch, keeping everything friendly. "We spent a beautiful day walking in the park and talking, really getting to know each other.

It quickly became obvious where we were headed. I think that scared him." They were supposed to get together the next week, but Sam never showed. "From then on, I could feel him withdrawing from me. I set him back when I told him I had filed for a divorce. But there was no way I could have stayed married to anyone feeling the way I did about Sam." ARTS New Rapchak post Lawrence Rapchak, former music director of Chicago Opera Theater, has been named music director of the North-brook Symphony Orchestra, effective July 1.

Rapchak succeeds Samuel Magad, concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who has served as the orchestra's first and only music director since its inception in 1980. Magad remains active in the organization as music director emeritus. Rapchak is in his ninth season as a preconcert lecturer for the CSO.
