Michelle VIENNA (AP) Norbert Burger, a neo-Nazi convicted in Italy of terrorism, has died, Austrian Press Agency reported on Sunday. He was 63. The agency said Mr. Burger died late Saturday of a long illness at his home in Kirchberg am Wechsel outside Vienna. It didn't specify the illness.

Mr. Burger escaped conviction in several sensational trials in Austria and West Germany in connection with terrorist activities he waged for the return of the Italian South Tyrol, a region that was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire until the end of World War I. A former instructor at Innsbruck University, Mr. Burger founded the extreme-right National Democratic Party in 1961. The party was outlawed 17 years later because of its neo-Nazi views.

He spent a year in jail pending an Austrian trial on terrorism charges in the mid-1960s, but was freed in 1965 after the court ruled itself incompetent to try him.
