FROLICSOME THREESOME--A perplexed Jimmy Durante glares »t his buddy, Eddie Jackson, who is trying to "get inta de act" with opera star Helen Traubel. It's all in fun, however, as they rehearse for Schnozzola's final NBC television show of the season Saturday, April 11, on "AH Star Revue." TREASURE ISLAND? NEW HAVEN, Conn. (IP)--An island where Captain Kidd was rumored to have buried some of his pirate loot (none has been found there) might belong to Yale university some day. The will of the late Sarah S. D. Gardiner, who died last year, specified that the Long Island Sound acreage that has borne the family name for more than 300 years goes to Yale if two nephew heirs die without issue. ' CROOKED CROW COLUMBIA, Conn. (IP) -- Mrs. Walter Wheaton didn't mind when her pet crow, Jim, began stealing little items around the house and hiding them. And she was only slightly peeved when he started stealing clothes pins from "lines full of wet wash. But it was too much when he swiped an envelope containing $2.67 from a neighbor. Jitn is on notice to find a new home. ''Records on by Don Ayers Times Record Reviewer Dinah Shore takes to the tennis courts for recreation from her busy working schedule. The singing star has a new NBC radio series broadcast Mondays and Fridays, plus her twice-weekly NBC-TV programs. Cold winds still blowing in other parts of the country don't mean a thing to comedienne Judy Canova, star of her own NBC radio show, as she gathers roses in her California garden. This week it's hats off to the classical section of RCA Victor. Now on the market in limited quantities is the new Limited Edition of Arturo Toscanini's recordings of all of the Beethoven symphonies. Music lovers have long marveled at Maestro Toscanini's definitive performances of those Beethoven symphonies which have been released, and now those who know and enjoy the Beethoven symphonies may hear them all under the direction of Toscanini. This edition is two tributes in one. A tribute from Toscanini to the masterful music of Beethoven and the deserving tribute paid Maestro Toscanini by RCA Victor. Toscanini directs the NBC Symphony orchestra and is joined by the Robert Shaw Chorale on the ninth symphony. Bud Collyer a Part Of 'Break the Bank' The magnitude of this great edition causes us to forgive both Beethoven and Toscanini for a few minor faults. We can forgive . Toscanini his race horse tactics in his treatment of the first symphony--and we must forgive Beethoven for his 'overestimation of the human voice as required in the ninth or "choral" symphony. Toscanini interprets Beethoven on the basis of what he feels and this cannot be denied him no matter how strongly we may disagree. Beethoven had been deaf for many years when he wrote the "choral" symphony, and was no longer aware of the limitations of the human voice. !· light of this we cannot fall to recognize ·.the value of the treatment given the ninth sym(Continued on Back Page) BUD COLLYER AND JANICE = SALES SERVICE SATISFACTION = WEEK'S TV SHOWS-April 4 to April 11 Tlmi Chwmrf **·· Ch*wiel Tin- Cfcwnel r . i ·| | T TONIGHT »:»^ Roseri 4 operation Education 4 1-00-- See It Now (MI.) » J:00-' All-star Revue 4 Seminar * ' GoldenaatePlayhouscs In the Park 8 4-00-- Strike K Rich t 2 Reel Comedies ' ' kit Carson 4 5:3fl -- 5-ir,_ Del Courtney 5 Ladles D»T * Film 7 Picture Playhouse 1 j : so-1 30-- 4:30-- Paul Speecle 4 Captain Fortune 5 Life of Riley 4 Arthur Godfrey t Perspective 7 Private Secretary 5 Let's Go Shopplnf 7 «:00-- 4:65-- 3:05-Show ol Shows INL) 4 H'« » Fact 4 your Home Kitchen 4 Science Review 5 J-OQ -- 1-15 -- BoxtaiB INL) 1 comedy Hour (NLK) 4 Western Film 7 6:30-- 20 Questions , 1 | . w _ It's News to Me 5 Sunday Roundup 1 Exclusive y Yours 4 T V T e e n C i u b 7 "'Uhbor Region (L) 5 Copper Kitchen 7 *^~ · r*nmedy Came OB 1 4:10 -- _ Sparton Huddle t s . 4 £l oameos ^ p jtewtreel · 7:00-- ' Billy Graham 1 4;1G ~,j, ,, »,. a Quiz Kids 5 0-00-- Guidins Llsbt t Whafs Your Bid 7 TV Playhouse (NL) 4 4:30-- '"fe Parade NL, 4 SS Sffix. * fte'^'on U. The energetic M. C. (vitamins take Cdlyers) moved along with the television portion of the program over to the NBC network this week for a 12 to 12:30 p.m. slot Mondays through Friday. Of course, he remains with the radio version on the ABC network five half-hours a week. This is only a portion of the Collyer day, which starts at 8 a.m. when he gets on a train in Greenwich, Conn., for New York. His first chore is a "Break the Bank" radio rehearsal, then the broadcast. From noon until 4:15, Monday through Friday, he finds time to appear hi two radio serials for CBS, "Guiding Light" and "The Brighter Day," and on one for NBC, "The Right to Happiness." Then there is his stint on the CBS-TV "Beat the Clock" show which takes care of his Saturdays. Altogether Collyer spends some 25 hours weekly at television rehearsals, 23 hours in radio rehearsals and is actually on the air seven and one-half hours. CoUyer had helped get rid of some $2,000,000 in cash prizes on "Break the Bank" since it went on the air--in radio at first--on July 5, 1946. It is one of the most popular audience shows for visitors to New York, many of whom write weeks in advance to NBC and ABC for tickets in the hope they will be chosen to try for the .money. Collyer and Wynn Elliot, the show's host-announcer, interview members of the audience before each program. They first pick 25 persons .and these are cut to the eight who have-the most interesting stories, come from the greatest distance, or are most in need of money. The person who actually hands' out the prize money--the record was $11,840--is known as "Miss Moneybags" around the studios. She is Janice Gilbert, who admits she sometimes gets as excited M the winners. ''I still get * bang out of seeing someone win who really needs the money," she said. "One of the happiest moments of my life ww when an army corporal crippled tat Korea won that $11,840." Harold Peary, guest-star host, plays a Portuguese-American immigrant in "Papa Goes to the Ball" on "Playhouse of Stars" Friday, April 17, over KPIX at 8:30 p. m. He's the same Hal Peary who gained radio fame »s the bumptious "Great GSlder- slceve." n TELEVISION SALES .
