He did surgery there four days a week and spent trie fifth at the leper hospital at Karagiri. "He operated on people with leprosy," said his wife, Madelein.

"Often a person's oormity such as missing eyebrows was what identified them as a leper to people. He did reconstructive surgery to correct such impairments." Dr. Johnson also visited Vietnam three times in the late 1960s and early 1970s to work with civilian victims of the war and to serve at the same time as a consultant at a military hospital He was there during the Tet Offensive. LaPorta, 64, an Illinois Appellate Court judge, began her career in the law as a secretary at De Paul University Law School. She subsequently graduated with honors from the school in 1957, practiced law for 18 years and served as a judge for 17 years. Judge LaPorta, a resident of the Beverly neighborhood, died Saturday in St. Francis Hospital and Health Center, Blue Island. Judge LaPorta was appointed to the Appellate Court in 1989 by the Illinois Supreme Court to fill one of three new positions to cope with the growing backlog of pending appeals in Cook County.

Before that, she was appointed a Cook County Circuit Court judge in the Chancery Division in 1982 by the Illinois Supreme Court. She became an associate judge in 197S. Dr. Johnson, a bngtime resident of Rockford, died at home Tuesday. "Hugh Johnson was Lincol-nesque, said Dr. Stephen Kavka, a fellow plastic surgeon. "He stood up for what was right and for common sense.

Besides his missionary efforts, he did many things for others. For example, he established courses on his own for beginning plastic surgeons on how to set up a practice. He charged only $100 and if they couldn't pay right away, that was all right If he saw something wrong, he did something about it, even after he had a severe stroke." Dr. Johnson earned his bachelor's and medical degrees at Northwestern University. He did graduate work in plastic surgery at the University of Minnesota and Mayo Ginic.
