Not even another day of rain could prevent Joe Morgan and Jim Palmer from having their moment in the sun. Morgan, the S-foot-7-inch second baseman who became a two-time National League Most Valuable Player, and Palmer, the three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time 20-game winner, Monday were finally inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame even if they had to go to a high school auditorium for it to happen. The makeshift plans, caused by a second straight day of rain, prevented thousands of fans from seeing the ceremonies in person. Only relatives, friends, baseball dignitaries, reporters and a very few fans were able to crowd into the 700-seat About 200 fans sat in an adjacent cafeteria and watched the proceedings over closed-circuit TV.

But if the emergency arrangements were less than satisfactory, the words spoken by Morgan, Palmer and the day's other inductees longtime Philadelphia baseball broadcaster Byrum Saam and Tribune sportswnter Jerome Holtzman were first-rate. "I wish I could say this is the culmination of all my dreams," Morgan said, "but truthfully, I never dreamed about making the Hall of Fame. I only dreamed about making it to the major leagues." In fact, said the smallest member of Cincinnati's Big Red Machine, "I remember my first at-bat like it was yesterday." The at-bat Morgan referred to actually was his second. It came in 1963, when he broke in with Houston, batting against the Philadelphia Phillies in the bottom of the ninth with the score tied and a runner on second. "I got a base hit, and the winning run scored," Morgan said.

"Gene Mauch, who was the manager of the Phillies, was so mad that when he went in the clubhouse, he told his players, 'You guys got beat by a guy that looks like a Little Leaguer. "Now" Morgan said, "I'm part of the biggest league of all." Morgan, who closed out his National League career with the pennant-winning Phillies of '83, credited Nellie Fox, who missed election by two votes in '85, with helping him become one of the premier players of his era. "I think the one thing I remember most about Nellie Fox," Morgan said, "is that he said to me one day, 'Joe, the guys who stay in the major leagues the longest are the guys that do the most to help their teams "And that," Morgan said, "is the 52 57 365109109 26 984.1 1005465421 75373615 AP Laserphoto Jerome Holtzman (left) receives the J.G. Not because the players aren't as good as they used to be; it's because, maybe, of the salaries. I mean, not one guy back here" he indicated the Hall of Famers seated behind him "wouldn't like to be making $3 million a year for doing what they did, but that's not why they did it. The reason I tried to be as good as I was was because of what these gentlemen behind me were able to do. I was going to be another Bob Feller or Bob Lemon or Don Drysdale, and that's what baseball's all about" Morgan matched Palmer's praise for Weaver by delivering a testimonial to his old Cincinnati manager, Sparky Anderson. "Sparky," he said, "will never get the credit he deserves for managing the Cincinnati Reds.

Everyone said, 'All you have to do is put down Bench, Rose, Morgan, Perez, and you can That's not true. Sparky Anderson was really the driving force behind the Big Red Machine." way I tried to play every day." Palmer, whose run-ins with Baltimore's Earl Weaver became almost legendary, spoke glowingly of the former Orioles manager. "Earl Weaver's theory was very basic: 'Let's win today and worry about tomorrow Palmer said. "We had our differences. I was 6-4; he was 5-6.

That wouldn't have been a problem except every time he wanted to take me out, he wanted to come to the highest point on the mound, and I never would let him. But I learned a lot from Earl Weaver." Winning "that's what baseball's all Palmer told the crowd jammed into the stuffy auditorium. "Joe Morgan, as great a player as he was, his impact on baseball was that he was a winner, and that's what Earl Weaver was. I hope someday maybe he will be considered for the Hall of Fame, because he certainly deserves it. Maybe.

For sure, if that hadn't happened, the kid you outwrote and outworked and outperformed wouldn't have been around in Cooperstown Monday to pound out this modest essay. We shared, and share, a love of baseball, but here's the fork in the road. Holtzman's passion is unique. You don't copy it; you just read it and savor. It's the' Holtzmans who contribute mightily to baseball's current status, a game for all seasons.

He took us into dugouts and clubhouses and meeting rooms before the mini-cam, before the tape recorder, before ESPN. The men behind the plaques in his new house, the Hall of Fame, Holtzman brought you every morning with coffee. "Mr. Philip K. Wrigley of the Cubs was George Steinbrenner's historical antecedent," Holtzman said at Cooperstown Central School Monday.

"He changed coaches every two or three weeks." Everybody roared. Another tip-off to the Dean. 22 47 "Hey," he said. "It's only a game." Palmer was terrific, but he had the handkerchief out. during his warmup tosses.

All those Oriole fans listening to his speech on the school lawn may never know. Morgan hailed Nellie Fox as an inspiration, though not before cracking during his first sentence. Holtzman, the Marine, had cause to cry but didn't. His bride of 41 years, Marilyn, was there, as were family and friends, but not daughter Catherine Ellen. She oassed away in February at age "My thoughts are with her today," mentioned Holtzman.

"Two days before she died, she said, i won't be able to be with you in Cooperstown. But Baseball was, and the coast is clear for all other news-gathering organizations. Jerome took Monday off. However, when last seen, he was preparing his next column, to be printed here soon. He had a purpose in that furry brow, a cigar in his mouth, the scent of a bloodhound.

Beware, the Dean. The kid knows the look. I 57 12 31 17 27 11 30 32 34 56 58 15 13 19 276 170 257 222 249 293 242 396 236 161 Diaz Spier Brock Your Fewer 2 14 3. 2 e. a 3 37 73 67 98 Continued from page 1 kindness, perhaps sympathy.

C'mon, said Holtzman, I'll introduce you to Walter Alston. And Jerome did that sort of thing throughout the summer, waving his cigar at everyone in baseball, but never forgetting that fright-' enedkid. Why did the kid shake so? Because Holtzman was what he still is, a 10-ton gorilla on deadline. He verily beat the kid's brains in from New York to Los Angeles and points between. The kid thought he could somehow escape the Dean's genius on that first road trip.

If his articles were out of sight, Holtzman would would be out of mind, or so the kid thought. Bingo, first morning in Houston, the morning newspaper there runs a syndicated scoop from his nibs, Jerome Holtzman. Something about Bowie Kuhn that the kid had no prayer of gathering, for lack of sources, know-how, perception. Jerome doesn't dwell only on the game.
