Friday Section 7 C- mmmmm-mmmiimmium uwnnwuwwm'm mi 1 1 1 i Siskel's Fllicks Picks Continued from page his soul mate. PG-13. Vt THE FISHER KING (Biograph, Bumham Plaza, Esquire and outlying). Terry Gilliam's typically overwrought dramatic style undoes the undeniably sweet moments in this story of a suicidal disc jockey (Jeff Bridges) who is befriended by and cares for a street person (Room Williams) who fancies himself a knight on a mission. Together they achieve accord with the women in their lives and, oh, yes, chase after the Holy Grail.

Gilliam comes from the "more is more" school of filmmaking, and Williams unfortunately does too. R. Vk HANGIN WITH THE HOMEBOYS (Broadway, Bumham Plaza, Chestnut Station and outlying). A sketchy but often effective se ries of adventures Mowing four young men from the South Bronx. Most touching Is the Puerto Rican kid who tries to pass for Italian.

VVrNer-director Joseph B. Vasquez certainly gets points for giving an all-too-rare Latino sensibility to the movies. R. Vt HOT SHOTSI (Chestnut Station and outlying). Another funny movie spoof crammed with gags from Jim Abrahams, a member of the Airplane!" comedy team.

At the beginning of the picture, coming on the heels of "The Naked Gun 2V?" from David Zucker, another member of the "Airplane!" team, I was worried that there would be too many similarly themed jokes Involving putdowns of movie cliches this time the main target is Top Gun." But it's hard to stop a laugh, and as soon as "Hot Shots" introduces Its stereotypical characters the young hero with the troubled past (Charlie Sheen), his blond rival (Cary Elwes), the goofy commanding officer (Lloyd Bridges) and the hot-to-trot love interest (Valeria Gcno) Hot Shots" gets very funny indeed. What is surprising is that the production company spent some money on the flying sequences as the young studs train In the air. They easily could have played cheap. Only a dream sequence involving a series of flashbacks of previous scenes In the movie and some obvious romantic-movie parodies are weak. PG-13.

JUNGLE FEVER (Wage and outlying). Spike Lee's film overflows with contemporary subjects, some handled better than others but each one of compelling Interest The advance publicity on 'Jungle Fever" had us believing that it would be solely concerned with ma dynamics of Interracial love affairs, this case between a married black architect (Wesley Snipes) and his Italian-American secretary (Annabella Sciorra). Their story is hot but underdeveloped. Instead, other Issues push to the foreground gradations of skin color, the devastation of drugs and the loneliness of racism." Samuel Jackson plays Snipes' older brother, addicted to crack, cons'antfy wheedling money out of his adoring mother (Ruby Dee), constantly running from his Bible-thumping rather (Ossie Davis). His story is one of the saddest In 'Jungle Fever," a film that is more mournful than angry.

R. Vt LATE FOR DINNER (Piper Mey. Webster Place) and outlying). Here's a truly whimsical story about a couple of brothers-in-law who are frozen by doctors and awakened 29 years Into their future our present only to try to re-establish some kind of rapport with the famity they love. Brian VWmmer from TVs "China Beach" stars as the man who desperately wants to reconnect with his wife (Marcia Gay Harden) who long ago gave him up for missing or dead.

A nice, small picture that mixes comic and romantic elements wed. PG. UVIN' LARGE (Bumham Plaza, Chestnut Station and outlying). A ham-handed slapstick comedy about a young black man from the streets who wants to be a TV anchorman and gets his wish when he stumbles upon a crime in progress. The potential for any kind of social comment about TV Is wasted In a foul-mouthed, juvenile script.

PG. Vi MY FATHER'S GLORY (Fine Arts and outlying). The first of two features that capture Marcel Pagnol's affectionate memory of famity vacations in Provence. The opening picture sets up the famity schoolteacher father, beatific mother and embraces the landscape of the beautiful hilts. The young protagonist also forms a friendship with a local lad.

The story is very sweet and does pay off In the second feature, "My Mother's Castle," which will be released after the run of this opening chapter. In French with English subtitles (5. MY MOTHER'S CASTLE (Fine Arts). The conclusion of an excellent two-pan adaptation of Marcel Pagnol's childhood memories of a vacation home in Provence. The first film, "My Father's Glory," told of young Marcel growing to love the countryside, its flora and fauna.

In "My Mother's Castle." the more dramatic of the two stories, young Marcel returns to Provence more often and grows to see his parents' virtue vindicated In a variety of ways. The form of the films, which have been wildly popular In France, Is a series ol gentle vignettes. For example, in "My Mother Castle," great drama Is derived from the family's finding a shortcut to their cottage by walking through the grounds of locked estates. Obviously this Is a different kind of film than Is corning out of Hollywood now, and Kve la cWavence Both films embrace the land and' traditional values. Wl you enjoy the second without having seen A gang of loners, loonies and losers are about to become something they've never been a team.
