CT role was his first: the title role in 1957's "I Was a Teen-Age Werewolf' which would become something of a cult classic. His television movie work includes "The Loneliest Runner," a 1976 movie about a teenage athlete based on Mr. Landon's own bed-wetting traumas. Another autobiographical film, "Sam's Son," about his Jewish heritage, was made by Mr. Landon in 1984.

His television work was marked by family- mindedness, wholesomeness and often featured stories of people beating the odds. But Mr. Landon was known as a fierce and uncompromising executive, often alienating colleagues. He won many new fans when he chose to publicly confront his illness. His early May appearance on the "Tonight Show" gave that program its highest rating in years and generated many thousands of letters of advice and sympathy.
