Siskcl's Flicks Picks grows to appreciate the Indian culture as fun-toving, mystical and kind. The rest of the white race, in the form of other Union soldiers, is presented as a bunch of violent crazies who are afraid to fight or are mentally imbalanced. The result a a picture that could be called "St Kevin and the Indians." And yet the good feeling here is palpable. Much as Costner's last film, "Field of Dreams," revived the sweetness of an American past, "Dances With Wolves" also is a tribute to a time gone by the horse culture of prairie life. This is a big picture in love with our landscape as much as with the Sioux Indians who inhabit It PG-13.

Va EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (McCkirg Court and outlying). The latest fantasy from director Tim Burton, who certainly gets points for" creating striking visual worlds In "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," "BeeUeiuice" and "Batman." Once again, the took of "Edward Sctssorhands" dominates the content of the story. Edward is a tragically shy teenage boy manufactured by an Inventor (Vincent Price) who died before he could complete his creation, leaving Edward with makeshift hands ful of scissors for fingers. Edward -Uvea In a castle above a pastel suburban tract When an Avon lady (Dianne Wiest) Continued from page abater Piece and outlying). Kevin Centner's American Indian epic a three-hour delight in which Costner plays an open-hearted Civil War officer who embraces the Indian lifestyle after being stationed at a deserted fort.

Having been told that aH Indians are beooars and thieves, Costner's character JOHN TRAVOLTA 3 "rvs from the neighborhood pays him a visit and senses his emotional pain, the story is joined, as Edward comes down from his lair to meet her neighbors and fall in love with her daughter (Winona Ryder, who has every major female teenage role in the movies these days). Unfortunately, the script does very little with this elaborate and intriguing setup. Edward's predicament he can't hold the girt he loves for fear of tearing her apart is established quickly and doesn't change. Burton's putdown of tacky suburbia ia hardly fresh. The third act of the film Involves a boring mano-a-scissors between Edward and Ryder's brutish boyfriend.

PG-13 Vt GHOST (Village and outlying). A curiously appealing amalgam of thriller, comedy, romance and supernatural elements. Patrick Swayze stars as a Manhattan financial executive who is murdered but whose spirit remains In an earthly purgatory as he tries to reopen communication with the love of his life, an artist played by Demi Moore. The ghostly Swayze character quickly discovers that Moore's lite is in jeopardy, too, and he tries to warn her. But he must find a vehicle to transmit his words and thoughts, and Whoopi Goldberg as a wacky professional spiritualist fills that function, much to Moore's disbelief.

PG-13. THE GODFATHER PART III (Biograph, Bumnam Plaza, Water Tower and outlying theaters). This week Flick of the Week. See above. Rated R.

HAVANA (Biograph, 900 N. Michigan and outlying). A "Casablanca "-style romance set against a world of political turmoil, this time pre-Castro Cuba in the week before the 1959 revolution. Robert Redford in one ot his best roles and performances plays a professional poker player who is finally distracted from his game when he meets a beautiful Scandinavian woman (Lena din) married to an aristocratic revolutionary (Raul Julia). Naturally, the story is about the selfish man choosing to do the right thing, but the literate script and Sydney Pollack's Impressive physical re-creation of Havana overrides the film's predictable elements.

There isn't much chemistry betwen Redford and Oim, but Redford is worth watching a It by himself, looking properly middle-aged R. HENRY JUNE (outlying). Despite this film being a trigger for the recent revision in the rating, its version of the Henry MHter-and-wife-and-Anais Nin love triangle is nothing special. Their story seems neither erotic nor important fvUler (Fred Ward) is presented as a sexual thug, his wife (Uma Thurman) as dim, and Nin (Maria de Medeiros) as a minor curiosity. NC-17.

HOME ALONE (Bumham Plaza, Water Tower, Webster Place and euttytng). A cloying holiday comedy about an extended family from suburban Chicago that leaves for a Christmas vacation in Parisand forgets to take along their cute little boy. The tyke has to battle both real and imaginary demons. Including a couple of stumbtebum robbers (Jos Pesoi, Daniel Stem). A predictable subplot Involving a supposedly dangerous next-door neighbor is in keeping with a film that Is little mora than a big-screen version ot TV sitcom matena).

PG. KINDERGARTEN COP (Burnham Plaza, Water Tower, Webstar Place and outtying). Arnold Sdiwarzenegger is very tunny as a detective who finds himself masquerading as a kindergarten teacher in order to track a criminal hot after his estranged child. But the film splits into two unequal parts: It works when Schwarzenegger is nek) emotional hostage by the kids, It fails as a thriller. A word of warning: Little kids may be traumatized by the violence.

Suggested for those over 10 years ok). PG-13. Vi LOOK WHO'S TALKING TOO (Esquire, Webster Place and outlying). A toilet-humored sequel that loses the romance and Innocence that made the original film such a pleasant surprise. John Travolta and KrsM Alley return with a new baby girl with the voice of Roseanne Barr, who has been given absolutely nothing funny to say.

The few Infrequent bits ot humor come from the laidback voice of Bruce Wilks as toddler Mikey. Travolta dances Hke Elvis In one scene, but director Amy Heckerting man- rto louse that up by shooting him too from the waist up. PG-13. Vt MARKED FOR DEATH (outlying). Steven Seagal's latest violent escapade has the former drug agent tackling one more case, this one involving Jamaican drug dealers.

Seagal looks hke James Beiusht on steroids and talks In a whisper but is convincing In his martial arts moves. R. MERMAIDS (Burnham Plaza, Esquire, 9 I ALLEY LV A TR1-STAR RELEASE 7 ,4 I 1 www.
