The Bag symbolizes the sacrifices made by millions of Americans.to keep our way of .life secure. There are -two ways to properly salute the Unit- ed.States Flag. They are'hand-to- head and hand-to-heart.' Public:Law 829, known as the Federal Flag Code, adopted by Congress, prescribes how both se- lutes should- be given. Section 5 of the code reads as follows:— "All persons attending a flag hoisting or lowering ceremony, or when the.flag is passing in a parade or review, should stand at attention, and salute. 'Persons in uniform should render the military salute. Men-, not in • uniform should remove .headdress with right hand and hold it-at the left shoulder; with hand • over the leart. Hendrickscn Let's Talk Cars One of the "Big Three"' car. manufacturers ran an ad recently on gas economy. It stated prominently in the text that gas savings "depend on who is doing the driving." You know something? They've got a point there! Over the years we've learned to check twenty, six causes of excessive gas consumption. Twelve are human factors and the rest are mechanical. Since most cars are in fairly good shape, the human ones are usually most important. Needlessly fast getaways from traffic lights cause unnecessary stops at the next light and. REALLY waste gas. Racing a cold engine, especially in winter; varying bursts of speed with excessive passing — and others less important. The mechanical ones are most numerous. Like a lot oC small leaks they add up to one big one. Dirty carburetors out of adjustment and foulcd-up plugs head the list. Burned distributor points, faulty automatic chokes and fuel pumps add to the toll, along with ignition timing. Dragging brakes and even automatic transmissions with insufficient fluid have been shown to be gas wasters. Also under-inflated tires on wheels out of alignment and out of balance. High engine temperature and fan and generator belts that are too tight. Week piston rings too! .....-.... Wherever you go for service on your car, ask them to check all these mechanical factors, if they're not doing it how. . As we've .said, the human part is the most important. It won't cost anything to check that. Hemlrickson Motor Sales «9 S. Third Phone 5151 CARPETS and FURNITURE BEAUTIFULLY CLEANED CAM. O. A salute to the flag in a moving parade shoulc be rendered at the moment the flag passes. The Flag Code also says that when the National Anthem is played and-the flag is displayed, all present should stand at attention, facing the flag and salute. When the flag is not displayed everyone stands at attention,, facing the music. Persons in uniform should give the military salute at the fii;st note of .the anthem and hold the salute until the last note. Men in civilian clothes hold their headdress at the left shoulder. Women salute by placing the right hand over the heart. When the Pledge of Allegiance is given, Public Law 829 provides :hat.all present should stand with :he right hand over the heart. Persons in .uniform render the military salute. When next you see our Stars and. Stripes passing in review, stand at attention, salute and show the w.orld that your are a >roud, patriotic ' American who las riot forgotten the men who ;ave their lives so that we could ave' the freedoms we enjoy. I hope this will answer the many.questions I have been asked about our flag and how we are to show our:respect and our pride n our United'States of America. • Edith Cooper Americanism Chairman, ' ' V.F.W.
