SUNDAY, MAY .'27,1962 THE PHAROS-fRIBUNE and LOGANSPORT KRESS, LOGANSPORT. INDIANA PAGE HFTEEN «^Pj^iSiJ»»-~" •%•" L|\W .__-.*«• «s The WEEDERS GUIDE By EARL AKONSON AP Newsfeatures WHEN YOU SEE the graceful tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and other spring bulb plants providing early color x to the landscape, do you ever wonder about their origin? This spring there are an estimated one million such flowers in bloom at the 125-acre Sterling Forest Gardens at Tuxedo, N. Y., only an hour away from Manhattan's skyscrapers. And among the splendor are 11 n*re tulips supplied by hybridist ffildebrand Van Eeden. Reportedly there are none like these 11 anywhere else in the country. Who could tell us about developing tulip bulbs belter than Van Eeden? It takes an average of seven years from the cross (pollination) to develop a new tulip. A cross made in early May will produce seed by the end of the month. And the seed is kept until fall for planting. The next year the bulb is tiny. Left in Ihe ground for six-seven- eight years, it will develop and produce its first flower. The plant is allowed to bloom for three years before final judging may be completed. The 11 new bulbs in the Sterling collection are 15 to 17 years old (since the original cross). Such bulbs have Oriental -blood. In their breeding, the Dutch first increased the size of the flowers and then brought the Oriental blood back into the varieties. The Greigi type (red) came from Bokhara, the Russian part of the s Dardenelles near the border of Persia. The original Grfeigii had more graceful forms than the Darwin or Cottage types, which were used for increasing the stem length. The range of color in the Greigii is limited, mainly to red and yellow, with no pink or white. But the foliage is striped and blotched. So rare are the 11 new tulips at Sterling that their Dutch hybrid- isl, D. W. LeFeber, could space only one bulb of each lype. So a peek at these plants actually is a preview of 1982 tulips, ASPHALT FREE ESTIMATES PROMPT SERVICE STREETS - ROADS -PARKING AREAS -DRIVEWAYS ENGINEERING ASPHALT CORP. Phone 5506 or 2657 as 20 years are needed to develop enough bulbs for home gardeners. In the miniature greenhouse at Sterling also is a. species tulip, Aitschisonit, one of the original wild plans from which many of today's varieties stemmed. This is one of the smallest tulips known. The flower is only one inch in size. In comparison, the-Holland National, one of the 11 new ones and probably the largest tulip known, has a flower seven inches tall and 18 inches wide. More practical home gardeners may see a collection of 125 new and standard varieties of tulips and 100 varieties of daffodils. In Serling's Living Library of Tulips are 16,000 bulbs planted among a network of tanbark paths. Along Daffodil Trail are more than, 6,000 of these blooms. And among the most unusual jonquils are, three said to be prehistoric, with trumpets that are split and woven into the external envelope of the flower. Late spring is a good time to trim evergreens, especially it you want to confine them to a limited area. Restrain yourself in clipping. Pines, spruces and firs cannot stand drastic cutting. Fine growing varieties, • such as taxus, ar- borvilae and juniper can stand more drastic culling. Our Davey expert advises: Don'l cut more lhan two-lhirds of last season's growth. If you do, Ihe evergreens won't have the power to start sufficient new growth. Late spring pruning has these advantages. New growth quickly hides the barbered look; winter injury can be corrected; possibilities of pruning injury and sunburning are reduced to a minimum; run-away growlh may be more easily confined. Here's The Answer By ANDY LANG AP Newsfeatures QUESTION: All our closets are cedar. They are 10 years old and all tho cedar odor is gone. This londition began about a yeaii 1 dgo. At that time, we saved one of rour \vriteups- about this subject, >ut now that we need it, we can't ocate.it. Could you please fell is what to put on. the cedar to >ring back the odor? ANSWEK: You do not put any hing on the cedar; you take sometliing off. When the odor dis: ippeai's, it is because the xwes of the wood have become clogged wtih dirt' over the years;. Another possibility is that someone may have decided to put iome kind of finishing material on the wood, which also stops this odor. To restore the cedar to it:s original condition, assuming that 10 finishing material has been 3ut on it, a good sanding job iis necessary. Use a fairly coarse jrade of sandpaper and rub ;horoughly. If a finishing material has been jut on. it, you'll have to use a varnish remover, following the instructions on the label carefully. When the finish has been completely removed, then proceed with the sanding as discussed above.
