Section 2 Chicago Tribune, Monday, May 14, 1990 Obituaries Almanac William Crowley; held in Stalag 17 P0W camp YS27 William M. Crowley, 77, was incarcerated in the infamous Stalag 17 prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. A lifelong South Side resident, Mr. Crowley died Tuesday at Brentwood Nursing Home in Bur-bank, where he was being treated for Alzheimer's disease. He was a gunner aboard B-24 bombers during World War II and was shot down over Austria on Oct.

1943. He was captured by the German army and held in Stalag 17 for 19 months. In 1947, Mr. Crowley wrote about the camp where he and 355 men shared barracks built for 100. "We were thrown into solitary confinement and existed for nine days on a cup of ersatz tea and two pieces of black bread for breakfast, a bowl of watery potato soup for lunch and ersatz tea and black bread for dinner," he wrote.

Mr. Crowley was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He retired in 1976 after working for 30 years at the Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. Mr. Crowley is survived by three sisters, Margaret Steinmetz, June Mulcrone and Virginia Oldenburg.

Mass was said Saturday in Evergreen Park. William Buf alino, longtime lawyer for Teamsters, Hoffa DETROIT (AP) William E. Bufalino a longtime attorney for the Teamsters Union and its vanished ex-president, Jimmy Hoffa, has died of heart failure. He was 72. Mr.

Bufalino, who died Saturday at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, maintained homes here and in Pompano Beach, Fla. He had retired from private practice in 1982. Mr. Bufalino represented Hoffa, the Teamsters or boJi in seven trials and won five of them.
