Chicago Tribune, Thursday, December 7, 1989 Section 5 11 Tempo onos ffiioff Harrison rejects McCartney's tentative offer of a reunion Quartet and Laurie Anderson highlight New Music Series By David Silverman Entertainment writer Pop notes V' :0 A iv 7 Mention Beatles fans: He's gone, he's gone, he's gone! Harrison, through a statement released by his manager two days later, quashed any hope for a friendly musical get-together any time soon. "There will be no Beatles reunion as long as John Lennon remains dead," the statement read. At Monday's news conference, McCartney said he "hadn't heard" what Harrison had to say and once told, did a little backpedaling on the issue.

"I'm not actually talking about a reunion," he said. "But we've got this film on the boil, called 'The Long and Winding which is actually Beatles footage. I was thinking maybe we could put together some of our home movie footage and we could narrate it and put some incidental music on it which would be, quote, new Beatles music. "I'm not really looking for a reunion because the Beatles were four guys and John was very much a part of that. So I'm not really looking for any kind of reunion, but there is a couple of projects that we might get together on.

It would not be a reunion but a coming together again of friends." A series spokesman said that discussions are underway to bring the WOMAD Festival of World Music to Chicago for the first time as the fourth and final concert of the New Music Series. Tickets for all series events are available at Ticket Master outlets or by calling 559-1212. McCartneymania seemed to be a chance for the parents of Blockheads, the kids who swarmed the New Kids on the Block last week, to do a little gawking of their own. From early afternoon until long after each of the three shows McCartney played at the Horizon, middle-aged autograph hounds waited expectantly for a chance to meet their idol.

But security was tighter than at the White House, and McCartney was taking no calls. Even those who gathered for a glimpse before his news conference at the Horizon Monday afternoon were disappointed. Paul, Linda and their entourage used an underground tunnel from backstage to walk to the administration building across the street. But if you didn't get inside, don't worry, you didn't miss much. The 25-minute show spawned little news, except that talk of a quasi-Beatle reunion (the remaining three plus Julian Len-non) was a bit premature.

Last week, George Harrison Music Series, a collaboration between JAM Productions and the Goodman Theatre. The series will get underway on Jan. 20 at Park West with the Kronos Quartet, in its only downtown Chicago appearance of the 1989-90 season. Their program includes Steve Reich's "Different Trains" along with works by John Zorn, Philip Glass, Jay Goidt and others, plus arrangements of blues standards by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Elmore James. Anderson, returning to Chicago for the first time since 1986, will present a wide range of multimedia works from her distinctive repertory at a concert scheduled for late February or early March, location to be announced.

The third event in the New Music Series will be "Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares" (The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices) on April 13 at Park West. This mellifluous women's choir launched the JAMGoodman series last year with a sold-out performance at Park West. Flutist Jeffrey Cohen and harpsichordist David Schrader will perform sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach for baroque flute and harpsichord as part of the Concert Spiri-tuel series at 3 p.m. Sunday at Church of the Ascension, 1166 N. La Salic St.

The Classical Symphony Orchestra, Joseph Glymph conducting, will begin its 1989-90 season with a program of Rossini, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven's "Pastorale" Symphony at 3 p.m. Sunday in Preston Bradley Hall of the Public Library Cultural Center. Mostly Music will present a chamber concert featuring CSO members Samuel Magad (violin), Donald Peck (flute), Charles Pikler (viola) and Leonard Chausow (cello) at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Ruth Volid Gallery, 225 W.
