"The Ileach Cirlit" dcx-Mit kki-oloKically examine teen-use behavior. The haraclern here don't grow stronger from Iheir exix-ru-in Ik--cause they are not really forced to cope wilh the actual problems of firsi love, drugs and ihe threat of pregnancy. This is not a film about ihe difficulties of growing up. it's a fantasy thai flaunts adult stuffiness. Pal Townsend directs energetically, using Blake Edwards-type slapstick and crass humor.

Townsend is most effective at directing the sweet, intimate love scenes tiotween Uiee and Daughton an attractive couple, tth natural and engaging charm. In spite of their inviable figures, Tomasina and Kline strain credibility hen they talk of themselves as jail -bail. Michael Murphy's able, sunny cinematography is contrasted by some pretty, pasiel poetic imagery. Editor George Bowers' savvy and sharp cutting keep the action going and the sex scenes inexplicit. "The Beach Girls" abounds in boisterous, bawdy, good-natured dippiness don't expect real life to interfere.

It's a film geared specifically for a youth market, which, ahem, does not include most of us who review coming-of-age comedy aUiut a liookish young woman (Dehra Blee) ho changes during her summer vacation from a bespectacled book worm lo a frmmr uur. Blee. who has just graduated from high school and is going lo tiegm pre-law studies in the fall, has everything going for her except that which she most desires, the approval of her peers. When her rich uncle (Adam Hoarke) lends her his posh beach house. Blee invites two former classmates Val Kline and Jeana Tomasina to stay with her.

Kn route. Kline and Tomasina. who are your typical mindless, boy -crazy swingers, pick up a hitchhiker (James Daughton). He turns out lo be just your typical handsome, intelligent and sensitive college man, and the young women invite him to stay at the beach house. Blee's problem is that she lacks the courage of her own convictions, so she allows her friends to take over and throw a wild party.

Guess what the neighbors think, and what happens when her uncle unexpectedly returns lo his house. The screenplay by Patrick Duncan, with additional material by Phil Groves, contains very broad humor and POLTERGEIST WOMEN: FIELDS OwfiNMi'i from 'i r.vf "ur fiHlh well that power has nothing lo ilo with perfume or soiling nr anything so blatant "I'owor i.s trust," she savs. nuu kl.v and firmly. Power is also al I'niversal, any way having your offices separate from the other executives. Of the company's officers, only Vema Fields is not headquartered in the black tower.

Fields chase the neighboring producer's building for a reason. "I fought for it." she explains, "because I didn't want to ke in a hive of politics. The other executives were not that receptive to the idea, but I won." Indeed. Now the other executives the uppermost rung, any ay come lo Fields. Once a eek the group assembles in her offices for lunch.

Fields enjoys the irony By avoiding the hive, she became the Queen Bee. In person, she is reminiscent of a godmother, in an idealized version. There are no frills, but lots of advice if needed. He own office is furnished exactly like her Van Nuys home. Meaning, unpretentiously.

Plants and pillows vie with the Oscar for attention. She still drives the BMW; her clothes, for years, were made by retired designer Rebecca Welles. The women are friends. "My luck in life," Fields said without thinking, "came from necessity. I never had the luxury of choices, really.

My husband died, so 1 went to work. 1 had two boys to raise. This studio offer came, and we created a job. The Directors Guild didn't let me direct, so I didn't direct. I've been lucky." She means it.

Fields is of a generation where necessity dictated, or prevailed. "There's freedom in that." she explains. Her father. Sam Hellman, was a restless managing editor of the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

In the '20s, he moved the family to Pans. There he wrote short stones and sports stones and, finally, got lured to Hollywood. (Among his credits: the original "Little Miss Marker" in 1934. for Shirley Temple. Verna's own education included Parisian schools and a degree in journalism from USC.

Her Hollywood career was almost a fluke. Exactly 40 years ago she was doing volunteer work at a wartime Hollywood canteen; there she heard about a job on a Fritz Lang picture. Her first day she fell in love, with both the editing room and a fellow working there. He was Sam Fields, film editor; Verna married him and retired. A dozen years later, Sam Fields died at 38 of a heart attack.

Young Verna found herself with two sons Ric and Ken under the ages of 5. From TV jobs she segued to editing films for the United States Information Agency, VISTA, and the Office of Economic Opportunity.
