The 55.000-watt signal is considered strong enough to reach all of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties and most of Los Angeles.

By fall 1981. Golden Orange-still using the call letters of KGOF hired a full-time general manager. Thomas Maguire (who had been sales manager for K1CU Channel 36 in San Jose), and then talked of an early 1982 debut. The investors had dwindled from 13 to seven. These now included David Levy, a former NBC vice president and producer of "Bonanza" and "Dr.

Kildaire" Richard Shepard, a former vice president at Warner Bros, and at MGM; Calvin Brack, an Orange County businessman and former mayor of Westminster, and the Duarante estate. The investors had put up $500,000 in capital and guarantees of another $2.2 million. Maguire departed this year mutual agreement." according to Simon) and was replaced by Latham, the deep-voiced former KNBC anchorman who reigned over Los Angeles television newscasts in the late 1950s and early 1960s and who has spent recent years as manager-anchorman with KESQ, the Palm Springs television station he once owned. "I had been consultant for them (Golden Orange) for a few years. They told me that they hired me to make things go, to get a hold of things and get us on the air as fast as we could," recalled Latham.

Latham and his 28-member staff, including chief engineer William Welty, started their llth-hour move into a single-level building between the Santa Ana Freeway and Disneyland only last week end. The building, bought for $570,000. had been used by the Melodyland ministry as its school of theology library. Latham said total costs to date, including equipment, are well over $1.5 million. (Another $500,000 reportedly has been spent on legal fees.

The start-up costs have been unusually heavy. "We're still considered part of the L.A. market, so we have to pay the same rates for (syndicated) programs. The L.A. stations have all the best (reruns) sewed up.

We can't get Channel 5 has that all to itself for 10 years. Can you believe it?" said Latham. Broadcast day will be 18 hours, starting at 7 a.m. The Sunday morning services will include those from Ralph Wilkerson's Melodyland church across from the new studio. The emphasis on sports will also bring Notre Dame and Oklahoma football.

Big Ten basketball and Cal State Fullerton basketball, gymnastics and baseball. The airing of UC Irvine basketball is being discussed. But KDOC hopes are highest on the two 30-minute Orange County news shows: a noontime wandering-reporter format and a prime-timeShow devoted to a single controversial topic. Both are seen as harbingers of more community affairs shows aimed solely at Orange County, from more news and sports to introducing performing and cultural arts events.
