Mr. Haines died Saturday aboard the cruise ship Island Princess off Acapulco, his daughter, Mrs. Murray J. Belman, said Monday. Mr.

Haines was born in Des Moines. He wrote his first novel, "Slim," in 1934, three years after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania. He then traveled west to Hollywood. Later he wrote "High Tension," published in 1938 and then "Command Decision," based on his play that originally appeared in serialized form in the Atlantic magazine. The play, first, produced in Cleveland in -1946, moved to Broadway in 1948.

Other novels include "Ultra," versity in 1961. She later taught English literature in high school and received a master's degree in it from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. From 1968 to 1978, Mrs. Michael worked as a financial public relations specialist in New York. She returned to Chicago as vice president of Hill and Knowlton and helped build the office into a major force in the public relations industry here.

In 1981, she was named director of public relations for the Chicago Board Options Exchange, creating a number of the that it still uses. From 1983 to 1987, she was a futures and options trader. Mrs. Michael then worked as a fundraiser for Providence-St. Mel High School on the West Side.

Survivors, besides her husband, include a daughter, Alexis; a son, Callan; her parents, William and Loretta Rohan; and two sisters. William Wister Haines in 1964. "The Winter War," and "The Image." His screenwriting credits include "Alibi Ike," "The Black Legion," "The Texans," "Beyond "The Racket," "One Minute to Zero," "The Eternal Sea," "The Wings of Eagles" and "Torpedo Run." In addition to his daughter, Mr. Haines is survived by his wife, Frances, a son and four grandsons. Novelist Leonardo Sciascia, 68, Sicilian who wrote about Mafia PALERMO, Sicily.

(AP)-, Leonardo Sciascia, a Sicilian novelist who wrote of the Mafia, official corruption and Italy's political class, died Monday at age 68, his family reported. Asked once whether he feared a Mafia reprisal, Mr. Sciascia replied: "The Mafia doesn't read literature." A family announcement said he died at his home in Palermo, capital of Sicily, but did not give the cause of death. Mr. Sciascia had suffered for some time from kidney problems.

He was part of the Sicilian literary tradition of Luigi Pirandello and Giuseppe di Lampedusa, who explored the character of people whose lives were molded by the island's history.
