The cannery's contemporary neighbors include the home 'of Mrs. Vicente Galindo Peralta Ayala; her father's home (Francisco Galindo), and the residence b.uilt by Vicente Peralta after his original adobe was destroyed by ttie 1868 earthquake. Ayala Park is also seen in the picture.

This is where Idora Park was built in 1904. Inspiring Book ISITORS to the Special Gallery in Oakland Museum's Cowell Hall will be stepping through a.portal of the past for real from now until Jan. 30. They'll be stepping directly into an exhibit entitled "East of These Golden Shores" through the portico that until only adorned the ornate Charles King mansion at Sixth Avenue and East llth Street in Oakland hardly more than a stone's throw from where the portico is now preserved for posterity. The King porcti is only a part of the Museum's current attraction featuring late 19th and early 20th Century architecture of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

"East of These Golden Shores," the title of the exhibit, is taken from the title of the new book featuring photographs based on a four year Historic Preservation Survey completed by the Oakland Junior League, co-sponsors of the current exhibition. The Junior League's book is on sale at the Museum, coincidental with the architectural display. There are 56 black and white photos in the exhibition, images of rural and urban homes as well as public buildings and some artifacts. But that isn't The pictures displayed at the antique spectacle are supplemented by architectural details from numerous Oakland Museum collections ONTRARY to popular belief today, many of the above items.were mass-produced by machine to give builder and owner the stylistic ornamentation desired. we are told by Museum authorities.

Selected graphic materials for the exhibition include lithographed views of Alameda County homes from iW-V W-. Photo from "Easfr of These Golden Shores" 'East of These Golden architectural flourishes as seen on this 1890 house in Alameda Thompson and West's Historical Atlas of 1878, from developers' maps and promotion posters showing available lots, and notices of public auction. Artifacts from the Museum's permanent collection are exhibited in a context relating directly to the photographs. Next Tuesday (Nov. 9) at 10:15 a.m.

a free lecture will be in the Museum Theater by Dr. Joseph Baird of the University of California at Davis entitled "East of the Bay: An Architectural History." The Oakland Museum is at 10th and Oak Street. It is open-Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., remaining open until 10 p.m. on Friday 'nights, closed every Monday.
