Keith Morelund hit a home run for one of the Cubs' runs in the game ut Monlrcul and Jody Davis drove in the other two with a sucrificc fly and a single.

The loss dropped the Expos four games behind the Cardinals. Cincinnati Atlanta Mario Soto, continuing his drive towurd the leugue strikeout title, struck out nine Braves at Cincinnati and put another crimp in Atlanta's hopes in the West. Solo 13-1 1 has 250 strikeouts. The Braves have lost four in a row and nine of their last 13. Johnny Bench had three hits, including a home run, to lead the Reds' attack.

Dan Driesscn also homered. San Diego 4, San Francisco 2 Terry Kennedy hit a two-run home run at San Francisco and Gary Lucas pitched 3 scoreless innings of relief to help the Padres end a six-game losing streak. The Giants fell 6V4 games behind the Dodgers in the West with only 15 games remaining. -DAN HAFNER sturt. Mura went IM Innings, then gave wuy to Doug Bulr.

Huir guvc up two hits but no runs in innings of relief for his seventh suve. There wus some doubt ubout whether the Cardinals had enough pitching to remain in the race, This week it has been funtastic. Their only loss was 2-0 to Steve Carlton Monday, despite a three-hitter by Bob Forsch. In five games the Curdinuls held the opposition to five runs and 23 hits in 45 innings. One of the runs and one of National League the hits was Dave Kingman's major league-leading 37th home run which tied the first game at 2-2 in the seventh.

Pittsburgh 4, Philadelphia 2 The Phillies pitched their ace, Steve Carlton, with just three days' rest in the game at Philadelphia, so he could come back with three days' rest to face the Cardinals next Tuesday. It didn't work out the way Manager Pat Carralcs planned it, because rookie Brian Harper hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning. With two on and nobody out Harper bunted foul on the first pitch and when the It likely this would be the week the St. Louis Curdinula' pennant hopes would start to fade away. Although they held a hulf-gume lead in the tight Eastern Division race, they hud to go into Philadelphia for three games with the Phillies, the teum with the best record at home.

Then, to complete the tough week, they hud to play buck-to-buck doubleheuders at New York. Well, the week isn't over until tonight, but the Cardinals, instead of being almost out of the race, are threatening to pull away from the field. With George llendrick coming through with big hits in both gumes Friduy night, the Cardinals beat the Mcts twice. 3-2. in 10 innings and 7-1.

With both Philadelphia and Montreal losing, the Cardinals jumped out to a three-game lead in the East. llendrick tripled in a run and scored another in the opener, but it was a looping single by Willie McGee in the extra inning that scored Keith Hernandez with the winning run. Bullpen ace Bruce Sutter raised his record to 9-8 by pitching three perfect innings of relief in the opener. The IBM Personal Computer is small enough for any home or business, yet big enough to handle complex tasks. Interested? Let us introduce you. We know the IBM com Sutcliffe, who is 3-0 against the Orioles, threw 172 pitches in eight innings before EM Glynn came in to pitch the ninth. Minnesota 5, Kansas City 4 Tom Brunansky and Gary Ward each hit two-run home runs with two out in the third inning at Minneapolis to lead the Twins to victory and prevent the Royals from increasing their lead in the West. With the Angels also losing the Royals still lead by two games.

Brad Havens (9-12) needed relief in the ninth after putting the first two batters on base. Luckily for the Twins, Ron Davis got Cesar Geronimon to hit into a double play, so when the next batter, Willie Aikens, homered it left Kansas City still a run short. Detroit 5, Boston 1 Dan Petry, making only his second start this month, improved his record to 15-8, in the game at Detroit that dropped the Red Sox seven games behind Milwaukee. Petry was one out short of going the distance. -DAN HAFNER A few hours after learning that bullpen ace Rollie Fingers might not pitch again this season, the Milwaukee Brewers demonstrated how they can get along without him.

Robin Yount drove in four runs with four hits; Gorman Thomas hit a three-run. and Mike Caldwell pitched a three-hitter to rout the New York Yankees, 14-0, at Milwaukee Friday night. With hot Baltimore cooled off by Cleveland, the Brewers increased their lead to two games in the American League East. It was the sixth loss in a row for the Yankees and eliminated the defending league champions from the pennant race. The Brewers are only 8-7 since Fingers, winner of both the Cy Young and Most Valuable Player awards last season, tore a muscle in his right forearm.

Fingers threw only a few pitches in a warmup in the afternoon and said his arm tightened up. "I'm disappointed," Fingers said, "but maybe I'll be ready to face the Orioles next weekend." As usual when he faces the Yankees, Caldwell did not need relief. He is 12-3 lifetime against the Yankees, the best record of any pitcher ever against them. Caldwell is 16-1 1, having won nine of his last 10 decisions. The Brewers jumped all over Stefan Wever, making his first major league appearance.

They knocked him out with nine runs in the first three innings. Thomas hit his 36th home run to climax the five-run first inning. The home run gave him the league lead, breaking a tie with Dave Winfield. Yount, having the best season of his career, had two singles, a double and his 24th home run. His 4 for 5 increased his average to .330.

He now has 97 runs batted in. It was by way of a birthday celebration for Yount, who was 27 Thursday. The shortstop is in his ninth major league season. His previous career highs were 23 home runs and 87 runs batted in. He is a prime candidate for MVP honors.

The top three hitters in the Brewer lineup, Paul Moli-tor, Yount and Cecil Cooper, went 10 for 13, scored sev- American League en runs and drove in seven. That kind of hitting will make relief pitching unnecessary. Cleveland 5, Baltimore 3 Von Hayes drove in four runs at Baltimore and Rick Sutcliffe overcame wildness to slow down, at least temporarily, the Orioles' surge to the top. Sutcliffe (13-6) held the Orioles, who had won 24 of 28 games, to four hits in eight innings. However, he had to work his way out of several jams because he walked seven.

Dennis Martinez (14-12) held a 2-0 lead going into the seventh but never retired another batter. An infield hit and Hayes' 13th homer tied the score and Rick Manning put the Indians ahead to stay with his eighth homer. puter as well as IBM. We're the pros at Computerland. We know small computers.

Boone, paying a price, perhaps, for the fact he was rested infrequently in the first half, has hit .225 after reaching the All-Slar break at .274. With one out, a runner at second and his team down only three runs in the seventh, Mauch let Foli fly out and Boone ground out. Asked about that later, Mauch said that if he had better players with which to replace Foli and Boone he would have started them (why then did he pinch-hit for them in the ninth?) and that if he uses pinch-hitters to score one run in the seventh (why just one who does he use to pinch hit in the ninth? "I don't make many mistakes that way," Mauch insisted. 'It may look to you like I do, but if you go back and analyze the season, I It is difficult enough to analyze the play of the Angels and Royals in September alone.

Angel Note A family illness forced left-handed relief pitcher Aad Hauler to fly to his Phoenix home. It was not known when he will rejoin the Angels Rod Carew got a fourth inning single to extend his latest hit streak to 11 games. The hit was Carew's tying him with Ted Williams and the illustrious Lafayette Cross for 43rd place on the alltime list. Continued from First Page Lynn had delivered a three-run pinch double off Murray in Anaheim last week, but this time he struck out, saying later there has been no improvement in his condition and he does not know whenhe'U be ready to start. Pinch -hitter Daryl Sconiers grounded into a force play, scoring the Angels' second run, but Murray then got Rob Wilfong on a pop-up to wrap up Clancy's 13th win against 14 defeats.

John lost for the 12th time against 12 wins and for the second time against two wins as an Angel. Jesse Bar-field homered in the second and three straight hits led to two runs and his departure in the third. Dave Goltz, working for the first time since he went on the disabled list Aug. 26 with a lacerated right forefinger, was tagged for a solo homer by Buck Martinez, then yielded a two-run single to Alfredo Griffin in the eighth, a hit that turned a 4-1 deficit to 6-1 and took some of the potential out of the Angels' rally in the ninth. Mauch's willingness to let Goltz pitch 5 innings after his long layoff seemed open to debate, as did his failure to pinch-hit for Tim Foli and Bob Boone before the ninth.

The unavailability of Lynn and the tendinitis that has deprived Reggie Jackson of some of his power has been compounded by the failure of Foli and Boone, the eighth and ninth hitters, to contribute as they did in the first half. Foli was hitting .285 at the All-Star break. Hampered STANDARD BRANDS PAINT COMPANY HOME DECORATING CENTERS Now in Stock!
