Fashion Notes- Fpring styles are making their appearance. S'carf draperies for fourreunx grow in favor. New bai-iiues are cut almost entirely with vests. Blouse polonaises, with carrick capes, will be worn. Maltese crosses with diamonds arc favorite pendants.

Large quantities of flowers are seen on all ball toilets. Flubby wool fringes are to trim the first spring dresses. Chainbery gauze is the material for bridesmaids' dresses. Lontr wraps erow in favor in spite of the warm weather. Dress and bieaklast capes are worn by ladies of all ages.

The corsage of the fashionablo ball dress is shockingly low. Blue-gray jet is the coming vari ation of this popular laeliun. Evening dresses of satin, just imported, are trimmed with lur. Short lur shoulder capes, edged with lace, ore worn over cloaks. Plum and pale blue is a favorite combination of colors this season.

tpanisli colors old gold, yellow and b-ack are coming in lashion. New percales show dashes of color on grounds of white or black. White English crape is a favorite material for trimming bridal dresses. A new ribbon, called the mari- bou, trims evening dresses Rose color is worn by the Erst brdeetnaid when several attend a bride. New passementeries are richly seeded with Leads of every desct ip- tian.

Rough surfaces and oriental col ors are seen among the spring dress goods. Kilt skirts for both boys and girls will continue to' be worn till spring. Large lace colars and outside cuffs will be much worn in the spring. law la I'll, Nlrealresaea. Thousands suffer from wakefulness, says the Loudon Medical Kx- aminer, who ore otherwiso In good health.

To' some of them this becomes habit, and too often a growing one. home resort to drugs, aud this is how the opium crave is often initiated. Others find wine or spirits ccca. sionully effectual, and ore thus induced to take alcohol every night and not a few, it is ta be (eared, bave in this way laid the foundation of intemperance. have, how ever, never been wanting people who have found a way of going to sleep wiihout rceort to such measures.

The momeris's nt one' liuo were popular, aud from tliem a host of peoplo loarued that loolnog nt any fixed point steadily would often induce sleep. In iho dark, howevtr, this is notsoeany; but th's difficulty was not felt in Braidism, which con-isied merely in the eyes and trjing to think they were watching aitontively the stream ol tiir i riioriiig and leaving the nostril It was a-senod that whoever would will (o see this stream as if it were visilde, wou'd infallibly soon lall asleep. We have known the plan to succeed, and it i evidently the same in principle us fixing the at-tenlion-O'i tiny single visible object. AnotlnT plan has jut reached us, proposed ly an American physician (Dr. Cooke), who tolls us that ill numerous ca-es ol sleeplessness it is only necessary to breathe very slowly and quietly lor a few uiinules to secure a refresh in leep.

He thinks that roos.t eases depend on hyperemia ol ilie biti'n, nnd that in this slow breathing the blood supply is lessened sufficiently lo make an in pression. Certainly when the mind is uncontrollably active, and so pre venting sleep, we have ascertained fi 0:11 paiients whose observations were worth trusting that the breathing quick and short, and they have found they became more disposed to sleep by Ureal hing slowly. This supports. Dr. Cooke's practice, but at other limes his plan quiie failed.

It is certainly worth nny one's while who is occf-Monally sleepless to give it a trial. In doing so, they should breathe very quietly, rather deeply, and at long intervals, but not long enough to cause the least feeling jf uneasiness. Iq fine, they should imitate a person sleeping, and do it steadily for several minutes. Writing ia Hie Dark. The noctograph is a simple In veniiou by means of which any ono may write in the dark with ease, and is consequently a blessing to those whose eyes are overworked.

It may be made by a child. A board of smooth black walnut, eleven inches iu length by ten inches in width, has upon it walnut frame like a slate frame, somewhat smaller than the board. Board and Irame are fastened together by small hinges. From side to side of the frame arc sire'chcd sixteen small brass wires, end can writo between them, tho wires serving not to guide the hand exactly, but to prevent the running together of the lines. It ia best to use ordinary soft paper and a lead pencil.

The paper is held in place by the frame, which shuts down upou Ih3 board as one side of a double slate shuts upon the other. True, any one may acquire the habit ol writing in the daik wiihout any such aid, but this nociogi'aph simplifies matters. There are many who, from various causes, did jt impossible to writ6 by a bright light, and to them wo recoup mend the use of the noclograph. Fartjr na Kour. Forty miles an hour down Mount Washington was quite enough to take away a signal service officer's breath.

Sergeant Cone had been ordered from the summit to Wash-, ington. D. ai.d alter waiting several davs for clear weather, de-. cided to start last Sunday morning with two companions. They had a largo sled, and intended to follow the track of tho Mount Washington railway to the base of the mountain.

The party reached the level above Jacob's Ladder in safety, bat owing to the steepness of the remaining slope, the sergeant companion decided to halt, and leave him to con tinoe is journey alone. With his baggage strapped to the sled, be made a fresh start but instead or proceeding at the former rate of speed twenty miles an hour ne dashed down the mountain side wi'h a velocity of at least forty miles an hour. Lto soon lost his balance, and was hurled one hun dred feet headlong into the deep snow. His companions reac'ied him as quicklr as they could, and then clambered down to the base of the mountain for assistance, and the sergeant was finally carried to Littleton on a litter. atrial.
